It’s a bit like when someone calls me up and just says, "My computer won't work," without any further detail—I can't exactly read minds, Milan!!!

It says something like: "File does not exist or is unreadable IMG_...." I think I understand what's happening, but I honestly have no idea why this keeps occurring. 🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷

Also, I'm running some older software like AutoCAD 2007. Every time I launch it, I get those annoying pop-ups asking if I want to run an unknown program. It happens with every single app and it's driving me crazy. How do I get the system to just stop bothering me?

For the video issue, just download GOM Player and use that. For the second one, there isn't really a fix because even when it does work, it runs like garbage. You could try setting up a virtual machine with Windows XP to run it there, or maybe just upgrade to a newer version.

Man, you're totally right 👍

Keith Bennett38 said:For those older apps, just right-click the .exe file—go to Properties—then Compatibility—Compatibility mode—check Windows XP SP3—and also check "Run this program as an Administrator"—hit Apply.

It worked for some programs—not all, I guess—but for the ones I actually need, it did the trick. Thanks.

As for the second issue—there's no easy fix since even when you get it running, it performs like crap (everything is super laggy)—you could try setting up a virtual machine with Windows XP or just install a newer version.

GOM Player doesn't help—it's the same garbage as the rest, and honestly, neither does VLC. Only DivX player actually works.

GOM Player is honestly garbage... it's way too overrated and lacks a ton of codecs, especially when it comes to audio, so I don't even know what they're bragging about regarding codec support... VLC is also crap... just totally unstable...

Give Splayer, MPC-HC, or KM a shot. For me, those three are the gold standard, with Splayer being my absolute favorite.

Give Splayer, MPC-HC, or KM a shot. That’s my top three, with Splayer being my number one choice.

Honestly, I can't stand these mindless, baseless posts from people throwing terms around as if they've run a hundred tests on a thousand different machines.
GOM isn't garbage at all; it's actually one of the best players out there, and even if it's missing a codec, it just downloads it automatically. Is it perfect? No, but nothing is. And saying VLC is crap is just wrong—it has never once crashed, frozen, or failed to play a file for me on Linux. Beyond that, it does things Splayer couldn't dream of, like streaming video and audio over a network—you can basically turn one PC into a little LAN TV station and watch a movie on ten others simultaneously. 🙂

Splayer is definitely among the best, but I've grown accustomed to certain advanced features it lacks. Plus, its keyboard shortcuts make it so easy to sync subtitles and audio or adjust subtitle size without digging through menus... which is why GOM is still my go-to most of the time.

N/A
... unstable...

Fejspalm... You probably have to be using some weird formats. It only failed me once with some files recorded on a phone (audio wouldn't play, but the video worked.)

That's strange. Maybe try uninstalling every single player, codec, and various packs you have, then do a clean install of just GOM or some other player bundled with its own codecs.

Look, I’m not going to say GOM is total garbage, but in my experience, it’s definitely a step down from those three I mentioned earlier...

The main issue is that it lacks more codecs than the others—and while it’s not strictly about the sound, I just want to point out that contrary to what people claim, it doesn't actually have a massive library of them. Many other players are much better in that regard. On my Windows 7 setup, it felt pretty unstable. Even VLC was a mess for me—super buggy, bloated, and just hard to navigate. That was on a fresh install of Windows 7; I can't speak for Linux, but since Linux users tend to be such a niche group...

On the flip side, I really liked Splayer. It was lightweight and never once froze on me. It’s also ten times easier to navigate than most others, including VLC. Most importantly, it played absolutely everything I threw at it. GOM, for instance, couldn't handle certain files, like some audio from my phone or various tracks from DVDs because it lacked the necessary codecs. At the end of the day, that's all I care about: a player that is stable and easy to use for watching video. All the extra bells and whistles just get in my way.

That’s just my personal take. I haven't tested every single PC out there, but I’ve put almost every player through its paces on my own machines, ranging from Windows XP to Windows Vista and Windows 7...

Found a fix—you gotta go into the preferences and tweak the color format. For some reason, it looks way better to me when I set it to "N/A" in VLC Media Player.
I guess it’s the same deal with everything else, too—probably just how my graphics card was set up from the jump, since even the desktop wallpaper looks wonky when I mess with the settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Kevin Nelson said:And listen, personally, I wouldn't call GOM trash, but it’s significantly worse than the three I listed above—at least in my experience...

It lacks more codecs compared to the others (it isn't completely broken, but I'm just pointing out it isn't as loaded with them as people claim; many others actually perform better). For me, it was unstable on Windows 7... VLC is similar; it's incredibly buggy, bloated, and messy.

On the other hand, VLC Media Player is lightweight, and I never ran into freezes or anything like that. It's ten times cleaner than most players (like VLC)... Most importantly, everything I've thrown at it has played perfectly... GOM, for instance, couldn't handle certain files... specifically some mobile audio and various DVD audio tracks (that's where it's lacking codecs). That's what I need in a player: primarily video playback that is stable and intuitive... all the extra bells and whistles just get in the way.

That's just my subjective take. I haven't tested it on a hundred different machines, but on my own setup, I've tried almost every player from the Windows XP days through Windows Vista and up to Windows 7...

See? I actually just installed a fresh version of VLC Media Player on my Windows 7 machine to see if I could change my mind about it, and the very first thing I tried failed—it won't play a .vob file. Plus, I can't even "drag-and-drop" the movie file and then the subtitle file. In GOM, that works perfectly fine: you just drop the movie file in, then the subtitle, and you don't have to go through the hassle of renaming the subtitle to match the movie title.
None of that works with VLC Media Player 😢

In GOM, it’s a total breeze: you just toss the movie in, then drop the subtitle right on top without having to bother renaming everything to match perfectly.
Neither of those things works with VLC Media Player 😢

Just giving it a shot myself now, and man, that .vob file is running smooth as silk! 🤷

Kevin Nelson said:Alright, I'm going to go ahead and test this out right now; if it's a .vob file, it should fly. 🤷

That’s exactly my point—based on my own experience, would I really call such a solid program garbage? No, I wouldn't, because it simply isn't garbage. Nothing is perfect; nothing is... but "garbage" is a different story entirely. I wouldn't even call Windows Media Player garbage, because at the end of the day, it actually 😁

Look, nothing is perfect, but "garbage" is a strong word. Even Windows Media Player wouldn't be called garbage... because it actually works 😁

Fair enough, but like I said, that's just my subjective take, which is true for pretty much any software... For instance, personally, I find that VLC Media Player and GOM act really poorly on Windows 7... To me, VLC feels cluttered, bloated, and unnecessary... but hey, that's just my taste...

Also, I only mentioned that regarding GOM and its codecs (since it claims to have a massive amount), which just isn't true... It's actually missing quite a few, especially when it comes to audio codecs...

Kevin Nelson said:Exactly, though I did clarify that was just my subjective take, which is how it goes with most software... For instance, I find both VLC Media Player and GOM perform terribly on Windows 7... To me, VLC feels cluttered, bloated, and unnecessary... but again, that's just my preference.

I also mentioned the situation with GOM and its codecs because the description claims it comes with a massive selection, which isn't quite right... It’s actually missing quite a bit, especially when it comes to audio codecs.

Actually, they are available—it's just that they aren't included in the initial installer. Instead, the program downloads them as needed. And once you factor that in, there really is a huge variety. 😁

He's right, there are plenty. 😁
