Honestly, that 0.1 jump doesn't really do anything for me. I mean, whatever, it’s fine as it is. As long as everything runs smoothly and the OS isn't acting up, who cares?
It's not exactly crawling either, sitting at a 3.7

Anyone happen to know how I can mess with the subtitle settings on Windows?
WMP... man, what's the deal with Windows Media Player? Just sitting there. Anyone else feel like it's just taking up space?
So, I heard some rumor floating around that you're supposed to toss a bunch of codecs or whatever into the actual folder where Windows Media Player is installed. Is that even a thing? Seems like a recipe for a headache, doesn't it?

Does anyone actually know which codecs we're talking about here? And does it even matter? Like, will it actually make things work like they did back in the day with GOM Player, where you could just toss subtitles in and have them play perfectly while watching a movie? Or am I just chasing ghosts?

thanks

Does anyone know which specific codecs I'd need, and will this actually work? I'm looking for something similar to Gom Player, where the subtitles just load automatically while I'm watching a movie.
Thanks.

K-Lite is your best friend here.🙂

Maybe someone's having issues with Windows Media Player. I guess it depends on what exactly isn't working.
I heard someone mention that you might need to install some codecs or something similar directly into the folder where Windows Media Player is installed. I guess it's possible, maybe.

Does anyone actually know which codecs we're talking about here? And more importantly, does installing them even make a difference? I'm just wondering if it'll actually function like GOM Player, where you can just drag and drop subtitles while you're watching a movie. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. I guess we'll see.

Thanks.

It feels like a crime to be using WMP when there are so many incredible players out there available now. 🙂

I've already messed around with those codecs, but honestly? Same old story. Still can't get any subtitles to show up.

Supposedly VOB sub works for this—but who knows how much of that is actually true?

I mean, yeah, they’re actually pretty good, but there's always some idiot out there using some weird-ass video format—I can never find one that's actually decent and handles every single file type I throw at it without glitching out.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling everything first; you might be missing DirectShow or a similar component (look for the icon in your taskbar). Alternatively, if the icon pops up while you're playing a movie, just right-click it and make sure "show title" is checked.
Also, don't forget that the subtitle file needs to have the exact same filename as the movie file for them to load automatically.

driftingangler11 said:First off, just try nuking them and reinstalling everything from scratch. You might be missing DirectShow or some similar junk (look for the FF icon in your taskbar). If it pops up while you're watching a movie, just right-click that FF icon and make sure "show title" is checked.
And don't forget—the subtitle file has to have the exact same name as the movie file if you want it to load automatically.

Yeah, I get it, the filenames need to be identical.

I've got the DirectShow codecs installed already... would it work if I just stuck with those?
....................

So, I just tried installing the DirectShow codecs into the Windows Media Player folder, and still nothing. No subtitles.
Tried installing VobSub into the same folder too, but nope... nothing.

Look, I'm checking this in Windows Media Player right now. The red icon is visible at the bottom, the subtitles box is checked, and when I look under subtitle sources, it clearly lists the .srt file being used for the captions.
If you have those settings enabled and it's still not working—honestly, I'm stumped. The only thing I can suggest is a full reinstallation.
But if you don't see those options, then it's obvious why the subtitles aren't showing up. You should try to manually load them through DirectShow.

Windows Media Player 👍

If you've already got that set up—then honestly, I'm stumped... the only thing I can think of is a full reinstall.
But if you don't have that configured? Well, that explains why the subs aren't showing. Maybe try forcing them in manually through DirectShow.

So, this Windows Media Player comes bundled with the K-Lite codecs, right? It handles subtitles just fine, but what I'm really trying to figure out is how to get it working on the standard Windows Media Player that comes built into the OS.

is this just the one that comes bundled with K-Lite, or is it something else entirely?

That’s exactly it.

I used to rely on it quite a bit alongside VLC, but honestly, I just don't find myself needing to reach for it anymore.👍

I used to run it alongside VLC for quite a while—mostly out of habit, I suppose—but honestly, I just don't find myself needing to do that anymore. 👍

I'm in the exact same boat; I just grab the K-Lite codec pack and call it a day. It handles everything I throw at it, so I really don't need anything else.

Look, I’ve used it myself. It’s solid, really—plays subtitles, plays everything perfectly. But after maybe a month of using it...
the picture on that player just starts looking washed out. Like, totally faded. It ends up looking worse than some crappy bootleg someone filmed on a camcorder in a basement.

the picture on that player starts looking incredibly washed out, and it ends up looking pretty terrible—almost like I'm watching some low-quality bootleg recorded with a handheld camera.

Well, it sounds like something obviously went haywire in your settings; you should probably check your contrast and stuff, since there are tons of options for fine-tuning the image quality.

Yeah, I figured there were a lot of them... but when I finally installed it, I just went ahead and toggled everything on. Every single codec, audio driver, video filter—just slammed the whole thing on at once.
Maybe that's part of the problem?

......
I don't even have it installed anymore. Honestly, I might just reinstall it, but only if I can figure out why the picture starts looking like garbage about a month after I set it up.

actually, I don't even have it installed anymore, though I might consider reinstalling it if I could just figure out why my picture quality goes to hell about a month after I set it up.

Honestly, it’s probably no surprise your playback looks like garbage when you've got every single setting turned on at once.
You should probably just grab the latest K-Lite Mega Pack—if I recall correctly, version 6.20 is the current one. When you run the installer, you really don't need to tweak anything; just stick with the default settings. Once it's done, there's no need to mess with any settings in DirectShow either—personally, I just check the box for volume so I can adjust the sound however I want, but that's really it, because honestly, nothing else is necessary. If you have any other codec packs hanging around, I'd suggest uninstalling them, because having two or more different packs installed at once can cause some serious headaches.

Just grab the latest K-Lite Mega Pack—I think 6.20 is the current version. When you run the installer, don't go messing with settings; just stick to the defaults. Once it's installed, you don't even need to touch anything in DirectShow. Personally, I just check the box for volume if I want to boost the sound, but that's about it. It's not worth the headache. And look, if you have some other old codec pack hanging around, just wipe it. Having two or more installed is a recipe for disaster.

Maybe that was actually the issue... having way too many codecs installed at once.
I'll probably just check all the boxes for the video formats in the K-Lite settings—that should hopefully stop things from glitching out.

I'll just set everything to default within the K-Lite codec pack for all video formats—that should stop the interference.

Look, I gave you a suggestion and you ignored it. Now someone is trying to help you again, and you’re still going to do things your own way instead of listening. I don't get it. Then, when nothing works, you're going to come back here whining about why it's broken again... "
Just follow the advice we're giving you first. Once it's actually working, then you can start experimenting.🙂
