I'm rocking Windows 7 x86 right now since my rig could never handle an x64 OS. I'm thinking about making the jump to Windows 7 Ultimate x64... just wondering if things would feel even slightly snappier.
here's what I'm running:

GA G33M S2L
Intel E2180 overclocked to 2.4 Ghz
2 GB RAM
Radeon hd 3650

so yeah, basically just curious if switching to an x64 OS would give me any kind of speed boost?

👍

(hope I put this in the right subforum)

Look, if we're talking strictly about the architecture, the 64-bit version should technically outpace the 32-bit one right out of the gate on your machine. That said, if you actually want to see that 64-bit system perform at its full potential, you’re going to need to toss another two gigs of RAM into the mix...

Is that so? Since when? 🙂

Just install x64 to see what happens. You probably won't see any real gains in speed given those specs.

I think what you meant to say is that if you have 4 GB of memory, the 64-bit version will actually recognize all 4 GB. 🙂
As for the speed, that’s a different story altogether. 🙂

I am currently running Windows 7 Professional version 6.1 (build 7600), so there is no need for any further updates on my end. However, I’ve hit a snag: my USB-serial adapter cable is failing to function on this machine, even though it works perfectly fine on an older computer running Windows XP. I have already downloaded and installed the latest drivers for Windows 7, yet the issue persists—it simply returns a "cannot open com port" error.

You’ve thrown a bunch of different things out there—USB, serial ports, adapters, COM ports—but you haven't actually said what isn't working. I guess it would be helpful if you could clarify things a bit more clearly. What motherboard are we talking about? Who's the manufacturer and what's the specific model? Just try to break it down so it actually makes sense. 🙂

I picked up some cheap Chinese hardware from a local tech shop, and honestly, it runs perfectly fine using Windows XP drivers. The guy at the counter gave me a warning that they might be unreliable, but I basically told him to stop being such a buzzkill and just take my money. He went along with it, and now the thing works like a charm—actually, it performs even better than it did on XP. Back then, my PC would freeze up every single time I tried to use hibernation or sleep mode while the adapter was plugged in, but on Windows 7, this thing is lightning fast. 🙂
Oh, and one tip: make sure you plug it into the same USB port every time so it keeps the same COM port assignment. 🙂

Cilim,
Here are the specifics: I am using a Prolific USB to RS232 serial adapter. It functioned perfectly on Windows XP, but I am hitting a wall with Windows 7. The machine is an HP Compaq presariti CQ71. To be honest, I have no idea what the specific motherboard configuration is inside this unit.

jawahel,
I have been mindful of which USB port I select, yet during installation, the system automatically assigned it to COM19. Since my software is limited to COM8, I manually reassigned it to COM1 via the Device Manager. While digging through the settings, I noticed nearly 20 COM ports listed as "in use." Is there any harm in deactivating them or reassigning their functions?
By the way, who manufactured that Chinese junk you picked up from Silicon Valley?

Correct, I have the V130 driver installed and everything configured properly, yet it still refuses to function on Windows 7.

Try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP....

Just right-click the file and use the troubleshoot compatibility option..... 👍

It’s not Windows 7's fault here—it looks like the manufacturer just didn't bother providing support for it, if you ask me.

Uh... I’d love to tell you who made it, but it’s three years old now so I don't have any paperwork handy. It’s just this blue translucent plastic thing with nothing on it except "USB CE" and "FC" 🙂
The Chinese, I guess. What can I say?

Is it finally working? I went through the trouble of completely wiping everything and reinstalling the latest v130 driver, and now it’s up and running. It feels a bit ridiculous that I wasted my time doing that twice already without any luck, only for it to work now. What a joke. By the way, since my Jawahell is also blue and translucent, you likely have a Prolific adapter.

By the way, driftingangler11, mine is blue and translucent too, so you most likely have a prolific adapter.

What do you mean "File X"? That's just a standard Microsoft feature.🙂

So, I installed Windows 7 on my D drive. Now I can't delete or format the C drive where XP is sitting. I want to get rid of it entirely. Where did I mess up?

I think you messed up right at the start of the Windows 7 installation. You probably should've told it to just wipe the C drive and install directly onto C. 🙂

Joshua Garcia3 said:The Windows 7 installation was set up wrong. You should have told it to format the C partition first so everything installs directly on C. 🙂

So I need to install Win7 on the same C drive where XP is currently sitting. How am I supposed to format C later to get rid of XP?

Look, before they actually install Windows 7, they’re going to wipe the C drive completely to clear the deck for a clean setup. You won't have any chance to delete XP afterward because it'll already be gone. Here's a guide on how that works:

Hey guys, I need a little help here... I just looked at my desktop and there's this annoying message popped up in the bottom right corner... --Windows 7 build 7600, this copy of Windows is not genuine. Look, I’m definitely not some tech wizard or anything, so can someone please break down what the hell this actually means? Thanks.
