Hey, can someone give a 17-year-old girl a quick rundown of what her first gynecologist appointment is actually like? Like, how long does it usually take, what kind of stuff they do during the exam, and honestly, what's the whole vibe or feeling of it all?

thanks!

Look, this is getting a bit off track, and honestly, I’ve always been the type who prefers to keep my private business to myself rather than airing it out in a public forum.
Nothing personal at all, really.

Look, you've got this thread right here.

All in all, it’s really not a big deal—the actual exam itself is super quick.

Honestly, it’s really not that big of a deal, and the actual exam itself doesn't even take that much time, I guess.

Thanks so much! There are just like a million different threads on here, it's kind of hard to know which one to dive into... 🙂

I don't think there’s any woman out there who would choose to have an exam every single day just because it's such a blast. It's definitely not! 😬 It’s gotta be awkward at least a little bit—I mean, let's face it, you're sitting there naked and exposed in front of some doctor. 🙈 That said, I do think it's great if you find a gynecologist you actually like and trust, so you can just stick with them... You eventually build up a rapport, which makes the whole thing way easier to handle... 🙏

I'm with you on that! 👍

The real key is finding someone who has a gentle touch—someone polite, decent, and reliable. At the end of the day, picking the right doctor is what matters most.

Once you get older, you just get used to the routine—going in once or twice a year, no big deal. It's that very first visit that's always the hardest part.

Over the last three years, I’ve been through so many checkups, procedures, and various medical appointments that honestly, just heading to the OB-GYN has become part of my routine, like saying "good morning" to a neighbor. I don't feel any shame about it anymore. And that initial wave of anxiety? It really does fade away pretty quickly after you've been through a few visits.

I’m right there with you, I totally agree. 🙂

I’m totally relaxed with my doctor because he’s honestly such a great guy and a true expert... I can ask him anything and he’s always in a good mood..

The absolute worst part about any checkup is definitely the Pap smear!!! Ugh, and don't even get me started on the iron levels... they drive me crazy.
I actually see a male gynecologist, and honestly, he’s fantastic. We start off just chatting, and then we get down to business. If he notices I'm in pain or looking uncomfortable, he immediately pivots to some random topic just to distract me. It’s great. At this point, it would feel weird to switch to a woman. I remember the very first time I went, I was incredibly awkward about it—like, "Oh my god, what if he's judging me?" or whatever. But seriously, it doesn't matter. He's a professional there to help, not to judge anyone's anatomy!!😉

I’m sticking with my current OBGYN. I told myself if Dr. Colak drains me dry, he won't be seeing me again... but honestly, after that 5/5 experience, I couldn't believe how much of an NEbolan a Pap smear can actually feel like. And yeah, I'm staying put. It's a huge win because he's actually nice—we just had a normal conversation. For once, I can walk into a clinic without feeling that constant wave of fear, discomfort, or shame.

If I could give one piece of advice to any girl heading to her first gynecologist appointment, it would be this: stop reading horror stories and listening to everyone else's bad experiences. If you go in terrified, you’re just making the whole ordeal three times worse than it needs to be.
Of course, we aren't all lucky enough to find the perfect doctor right away. But even if you happen to end up with someone who is inexperienced or a bit rough, the experience is much more manageable when you aren't constantly haunted by the nightmare stories of other women.
Before my own first visit, I went down a rabbit hole of online forums and interrogated my friends, my mom, and my aunts until I was completely overwhelmed. I showed up so anxious that my legs actually locked up when I tried to sit on the exam table! And the irony? Once the exam was over—which, by the way, I didn't even feel—I felt physically ill from the sheer stress of it all.
The reality is that every woman will face this at some point. None of us are exactly jumping for joy at the prospect, right? But nothing happens that hasn't happened to someone else before; there’s really no reason to fear the unknown when we’ve all shared this milestone. Most importantly, that first exam shouldn't hurt. Discomfort is subjective—it often depends more on how relaxed you are than on the doctor themselves.
Personally, once the exam begins, I find it easier to just mentally detach and stop viewing the doctor as a person... it helps me stay calm.

It’s honestly not as bad as I expected. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't say I'm exactly walking on sunshine, but... having gone through three births, I know firsthand that there are much more intense pains out there... so this doesn't feel quite as terrifying. At the end of the day, it all really comes down to the doctor you have in your corner.

Look, let me be real: I am definitely not relaxed or happy about this.
I’ve been through two gynecological surgeries already, so trust me when I say I know what actual pain feels like.
Getting an exam or a Pap smear doesn't hurt. (I mean, compared to what I've dealt with, it’s nothing!
The awkwardness is the worst part, but I guess that’s just normal—if I actually enjoyed being poked and prodded like that, I’d probably be a total freak.
But honestly, the discomfort and any potential pain pale in comparison to the sheer terror of waiting for the results—wondering if the Pap smear will come back clean or if the ultrasound shows something scary...
When everything comes back fine, no amount of awkwardness can touch that feeling of pure relief.
My last surgery was a polyp ablation... yeah, it hurts, and yeah, it’s uncomfortable, but that’s peanuts compared to facing a diagnosis like ovarian or cervical cancer. It breaks my heart because I know several women, just a little older than I am—let's say, in their mid-30s😉—who have unfortunately received those kinds of diagnoses. They weren't keeping up with their regular checkups. I’ve even heard stories about women in their late 20s who ended up with incredibly serious issues because they skipped their screenings...

So, maybe this topic is a bit blunt, but you shouldn't try to "relax" through it; we should really be talking about why these gynecological exams are so damn important in the first place!
Anyway, that's my two cents...

:

You mean that speculum they use to spread everything open during an exam?😉
Honestly, that’s just plain uncomfortable.
I’m not feeling any pain myself.🤷
Honestly, I happened to catch a glimpse of that little device once... if I hadn't known he’d used it before and realized it wasn't actually a huge deal, I swear on my life I would have just stood up and bolted straight out the door.😁
Alright, I’m going to push back a little here... but seriously...🤣

Haha, I finally went in for that procedure myself today... honestly, it was such an experience. It’s not that I’m embarrassed or anything, it just felt a bit unsettling dealing with all that cold metal and that sensation of everything being cleared out. But the doctor was great—really patient and careful, explaining every step along the way. He made sure I knew I could ask him anything and even gave me the referrals I needed. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it went.

Honestly, I feel bad even bringing this up because it happens every single time... it’s just—well, let’s just say it’s hands down my most dreaded appointment (for example, I would trade one OB-GYN for five dentists in a heartbeat! 🤣). The sheer anxiety makes me worry that something might actually be wrong—and if it were, I’d be forced to go on some endless pilgrimage to specialists all over the country, which is—ugh... And before anyone suggests it, this isn't about being "shy" or anything like that. It’s not even that I feel awkward if the doctor is male—in fact, I’ve actually had much, much better experiences with men (though I only saw one female doctor before switching to a male practitioner, whom I stuck with, but that’s beside the point)... What I mean is, while I'm lying on that exam table, I am practically in pre-cardiac arrest; my heart is pounding so hard I think it might jump out of my chest, and I’m performing literal miracles for the Pope... Not on purpose, mind you... I just instinctively tense up so violently that I practically launch all those metal instruments across the room like they're being fired from a cannon—I once actually hit a guy in the head with one, I swear!!! 😂🤣
Anyway, my mom was there with me that time, and after I finally got off the table, we were both absolutely dying of laughter... It was like a catapult effect. Then, when I went in for my checkup just yesterday, the doctor suggested we run a Pap smear since it's been forever, and I was already losing my mind from pure panic... Honestly, I think I need a psychiatrist. I just cannot relax. It feels so foolish because, as I said—I haven't had any bad personal experiences; I've only ever witnessed some really intense medical situations and treatments with friends that were—honestly—quite shocking. They had to go through such grueling stuff, things that were life-threatening... so now, even I end up shaking so hard my legs tremble the moment I'm on that table... How can I get help with this? 🤷 It’s just so stupid to me that I haven't actually had any traumatic experiences myself, yet here I am, acting like a total wreck, yah... 🙄

I don't know what there is to be afraid of—just imagine going in, ☕ and that's it... I went to my first male OBGYN at sixteen and wasn't scared at all... It's normal and necessary, and just because others go through certain things doesn't mean you will too... Think positively, stay optimistic, and it'll be much easier... 👍
