I can probably manage the graphics card, but you won't see any Aero effects, and honestly, nothing else is likely to work either. Besides, you're working with way too little RAM here. 😉

Of all the drivers you could have possibly brought up, you pick the ones that can't even be installed from XP to Vista. xD

Just find some drivers for Vista—use NVIDIA instead of ATI—and it should run on Windows 7 without any issues. I guess. Maybe.

Look, as for the RAM and the CPU—well, at least you’ll actually be able to see what’s going on. If your PC is just sitting there doing basic office work, browsing the web, or checking messages, I guess you’ll get by without any major headaches.

Don't even bother... seriously. With 512 RAM, you'll barely scrape by on Windows XP, let alone Windows 7.

When I first finished installing 7 and popped open the Task Manager... I saw 29 processes already running in the background.

What should I kill first? Honestly, looking at these processes feels like stepping back into the Windows XP era... which, okay, I guess it’s great if you’re obsessed with saving every single ounce of RAM.
This is my Vista setup... running the "speedy" version, which basically means it's been stripped down to nothing.

I’ve got nearly 60 of them running, which is just great :O—using up about 1.15GB of RAM. I’ve managed to kill off maybe five services so far, but honestly, does anyone actually know which ones are safe to shut down without breaking everything?
On another note, I’m dealing with this massive headache when it comes to gaming. I can't seem to set any resolution lower than the default 1680x1050; I mean, I *can* technically select something else, but then I get these hideous black bars around the edges because the image won't stretch to fill the screen, making everything look absolutely disgusting. It’s probably a driver issue since I'm currently running an NVIDIA beta specifically for Windows 7, but is there actually a fix for this? And would it even be possible to just install the standard drivers for 64-bit Windows Vista instead?

I find myself wondering about this as well. It’s possible they presented a slightly altered interface during the rollout, and now everyone is losing their minds and treating a standard operating system like some kind of divine revelation...

I maintained that it would eventually surpass Windows Vista, and I have absolutely no doubt about its potential, but looking at this beta version, it certainly isn't better...

I don't know, man, I feel a massive sense of relief now that I’ve finally ditched Windows Vista for Windows 7, especially compared to that whole painful transition from Windows XP to Vista; it honestly feels lightning fast by comparison. Back when I was stuck on Vista, every single time I tried to close a game, I’d be forced to sit there staring at my screen for a good two minutes just waiting for the entire OS to stop choking and actually return to some semblance of normalcy.

People say Windows Vista is more demanding than Windows 7, but I ran it without any issues on an old slotted Athlon 600 overclocked to 700 with 512 Rama [133 MHz]. For the stuff I mentioned—web browsing and messaging—it was fine.

Yeah, I agree there isn't a massive difference between Vista and Windows 7, so I'm sticking with XP.
I have to admit though, the Windows 7 taskbar looks freaking awesome, and I can't wait for them to port it to XP. PowerShell 1.0 is already ported to XP, and 2.0 should be coming once Windows 7 finally drops for all the unhappy users xD

What’s your take on just sticking with Windows XP? I mean, Windows Vista is a massive step up, and honestly, Windows 7 is even better still.

Give it a shot; it should run OK, just like it does on my rig.😉
If you can find it, I'd recommend downloading: Windows.7.Beta.Build.7000.LiTE. It's only about 1.2GB and it runs smoothly on just about any older PC out there.
Keep in mind that 512MB of RAM is really pushing the absolute limit here. The OS itself is going to eat up roughly 350MB, leaving you with maybe 150MB of free space to actually breathe!..😉
