Honestly, you can totally enable it on Windows Vista if you want—it’s not a huge deal. Though, I guess you don't really need to... I mean, you could just grab all the latest updates once a month and call it a day

I'm asking because if I turn this on and Microsoft realizes I've got a pirate copy, are they gonna totally wreck my Windows?

if you got a legit key, they won't catch anything
even if they do, they aren't gonna wreck your system, just some pop-up or tool to warn you about the illegal stuff. pretty easy to get rid of 🙂

What Bluetooth software are you all running on Windows 7? I’ve had a hell of a time just trying to get my software to launch—the Bluetooth stick itself seems fine, but without the software actually running, I can't even get the basic features to work properly. It was a similar nightmare back when I was using Windows XP; I struggled through the installation, but eventually tracked down the right drivers and got the Nokia CD working.
With Windows 7, I couldn't get that Nokia software to behave, so I ended up using some Soliol driver just to get by. It works, I guess, but I'm definitely not thrilled with how limited the functions are. Does anyone have a better recommendation? (Something that actually plays nice with Windows 7?)

I’ve been watching this unfold for a whole week now... apparently, some guy installed it at his girlfriend's place and it’s just freezing up constantly. He can't even get a printer installed, Spotify is acting up, and then you've got Daemon and alcohol 120 causing massive headaches... things like the DVD-ROM drive just vanishing entirely, etc., etc. I'm talking about the Windows 7 RC1 7100 version specifically. Well, maybe it doesn't happen to everyone, but I suppose for certain people, things just aren't working quite right yet. I guess it might be best to just wait a little longer before jumping in.
As for me, I actually ended up reverting back to Windows Vista... the Ultimate edition. Honestly, I think Windows Vista SP1 runs much smoother and feels way more reliable than this new Windows 7 system... at least, that's how it seems to me for the time being.

I haven't gone through every single post yet—maybe I missed it, but has anyone actually written an in-depth review of Windows 7? You know, like those detailed breakdowns you see on sites like PC Gamer or IGN, covering all the pros, the cons, and everything in between?

Yeah, I think it was that bug from last month, if I remember right.
If you look through the torrents, there's probably a full scan of the bug in a .pdf somewhere.
It wouldn't hurt to check out some US warez sites, too.
Anyway, I managed to find the .pdf for that issue—just give Google a little nudge.

PC Mag actually covered it a few months back.
Anyway, it’s probably not worth the headache for someone who isn't particularly tech-savvy. For instance—I couldn't exactly get over to my buddy's place to fix it for him—he tried installing it, and it immediately hit him with a password prompt. It was likely some permission conflict because he was installing it onto an old drive. I didn't have a quick fix off the top of my head since I've never run into that specific issue, so he just ended up reverting back to Windows XP. Even if he had bypassed that admin account issue—which might have been tied to his old Windows XP user profile or something along those lines, I can't quite remember—he would have just run into folder access problems right after. Then I'd be stuck trying to walk him through fixing permissions over the phone, and he really isn't the type to enjoy that kind of troubleshooting.
I actually had a bit of a struggle myself when I had to sort out permissions on a secondary drive—never really had a reason to mess with that before—because the file owner was still set to an old username from a different system.

So, out of nowhere, my internet just completely died on Windows 7. Everything looks fine on my end—the status says I'm connected and all that—but nothing actually loads. :S It’s driving me nuts because everything works perfectly fine when I boot up into Windows XP.

I'm running Windows 7 RC1 7100 and I can't get Daemon to work... anyone figured this out yet? I remember dealing with similar headaches back when Windows Vista first dropped—the old 4.0 version used to block everything, but now the newer one just won't install. It keeps telling me to restart and try again, but honestly, it gets me nowhere... 😢Also, does Windows 7 come with DirectX 10 pre-installed? And does anyone know if there's a way to grab DirectX 10 or 10.1 for Windows Vista...

Regarding Daemon Tools—have you tried using compatibility mode?
It works perfectly fine for me.

I’m not really up to speed on that compatibility mod—not sure if I should stick with Windows 7 or just roll back to Windows Vista SP1... What’s your take? And could you walk me through how to get Daemon working with that mod? Thanks in advance. Oh, forgot to ask about the activation key too—it keeps asking me to activate Windows like I've only got 30 days left. Same thing happened with Vista, but once I grabbed the new one with SP1, it was automatically "genuine." Is it even worth upgrading on this rig?

Just right-click the .exe file you're trying to run, head over to the Compatibility tab, and pick whatever setting makes sense—you could try Windows XP SP3 or even Windows Vista, for instance. Usually, that does the trick and gets most programs running smoothly!!
Of course, you’d need to have Windows 7 installed already to see those options.

I mean, if you just try typing "Daemon Tools on Windows 7" into Google, you’ll probably see thousands of absolutely frantic people all struggling with the exact same headache because they just can't get it to work properly...
In general, I feel like both Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120 cause massive amounts of trouble... personally, I haven't been able to make either one of them function correctly on build 7077 or 7100, no matter what I tried, which is quite frustrating, really... so, yeah... maybe just stay away from Windows 7 for now? I guess Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 are actually much more reliable solutions at the moment than what we're dealing with here.

Well, it works for me
Daemon Tools Lite, 4.30.4.0027
I just took a look—honestly, I can't even remember how I originally set this up—and realized the installer was running in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3. Curiously, the actual .exe file I'm using right now isn't in compatibility mode at all; it’s just running normally...
I decided to go with Windows 7 because, based on my own testing, certain tasks feel much snappier than they did on Vista—things like file transfers, boot times, deleting files, and so on. It feels just as fast as Windows XP, whereas Vista felt roughly 20-30% slower—that's a bit of a guess on my part, but it felt significant.
But really, it's best to just play it by ear if you're running into issues; it all depends on what you actually need to do. For instance, a buddy of mine can't get Archlord to run. I don't really play those types of games myself, and everything runs fine for me, except for the Nokia file manager—basically, the Bluetooth drivers are a headache, though I ran into similar trouble back on Windows XP.

I’ve actually ditched Daemon Tools for Virtual CloneDrive—honestly, I think it’s way better than Daemon. Just my two cents! 🙂 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=...a%C5%BEi&meta=

that's a total fake!!
If you want to see what people actually think about this stuff, just go ask someone over on this forum and they'll tell you straight—that specific build was never even a thing. It basically doesn't exist. 😉
