I'm checking out the FBI and NBC—we'll see what happens. I have to enroll this year because they're bringing in those new state exams next year. 🤮

OnTopic: anyone tried running COD 4 on Windows 7?

Yeah, I play COD 4 on Windows 7.
The SP works on all versions, and multiplayer works fine for me on the RC (build 7100) version. On any other version, PB glitches out and kicks you from the servers.

I'm gonna check out the FBI and NBC sites and just see how things shake out—I really need to enroll this year, since they're switching over to those new state standardized tests next year... 🤮

OnTopic: Has anyone actually tried running Call of Duty 4 on Windows 7?

OFF: Honestly, when you try to sign up for NBC, you'll probably go blind from all the glare lol
What a total joke of a university 😁
OnTopic: Any idea when the RTM is dropping?
And does anyone finally know if they're making those little loading icons—you know, the ones like what Windows Vista uses?
The ones that pop up while everything is booting?

I get the feeling I'm not the only one running into thumbnail issues lately. You see people complaining about this online all the time—personally, I’m seeing glitches with video thumbnails, but now it’s even happening with my JPEGs... It’ll probably stay broken until the RTM version rolls out, though I'm holding out hope for a quick patch, even if I doubt a simple fix can actually solve it. Honestly, when I set up a new system—like the RC version I just finished installing—I really try to avoid reinstalling a fresh OS too soon, since I've spent so much time tweaking this one and I'd rather not deal with setting everything up all over again.

Well, I just stumbled upon some great news here: http://www.blogsdna.com/3083/how-to-...build-7100.htm
It looks like an upgrade might actually be doable—with a little extra effort—by moving from the RC to the RM version. I’ll probably give it a shot once my current version expires, or maybe even sooner if I find the time.

OT: I know, I was there last year too 😬 It’s just that this year they don't have that feature where they text you your results immediately 😢 I made the cut last year, but I was already at the beach by the time I was supposed to turn in my enrollment papers 😬

a i what’s actually stopping you from just wiping the drive and doing a fresh install?

Look, honey...
Just download and install this:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

And then you'll actually see what kind of RAM you have in your machine—whether it's DDR or DDR2...
If you had bothered to look up the minimum system requirements for Windows 7 online before installing it, you wouldn't be making such cynical comments...

The recommendation is at least 2GB, though it will run on 1GB. On your 512MB? It’s going to crawl...
Again, sorry if you felt insulted; I didn't mean anything by it. But this thread is 30 pages long with about 600 comments—you really should have just skimmed through it first.😁

Oh, boo hoo, now I'm weeping over your cruel post.😂
I have Everest and some other CPU-ID tool, whatever it's called. Turns out I have DDR.

ironeagle3 said:Or she could just rip the RAM right out of the case, run to the store, and buy some better sticks—maybe something with higher MHz. I'd recommend 800MHz, though I'm not sure if it'll even work.

It's fine. Even though I'm running 7 Ultimate, it's decent enough. It runs about as smooth as XP when I start hammering it with programs, and obviously, I can't live without those apps because I love my software.😬

Nah, I don't feel like tearing the whole tower apart right now.

Does anyone know where I can grab a Windows 7 theme and install it on Vista? If someone has a link, just drop it here... thanks everyone...

Just swap out your desktop wallpaper and switch the taskbar color to a light blue; that should do the trick. 👍

mvanb4 said:I think you aren't just an average user; you're a power user. It shows in the screenshot. With all that clutter, it’s easy for the OS to get lost or start lagging. Looking at your setup, you have three main programs installed alongside at least 50 active processes—so it's no wonder things are getting messy.

The thing is, I really don't feel like reinstalling a massive chunk of software and all my plugins. I was just thinking about the sheer amount of work required immediately after a fresh install: Opera, AVG, another browser, Adobe, then eventually Dreamweaver, plus some image resizer to integrate into the right-click menu, Rename-it, Skype, various other tools, Microsoft Office Suite, Bluetooth drivers, a mail client, and so on. It's a huge mountain of work, especially since I have to configure everything—and I need to get back to working on images.

But I managed to screw up this installation even though everything was running pretty smoothly— FOOL. (Rule number one: if everything is working perfectly, don't touch it!)

In a moment of total distraction, I went ahead and tried to install some Windows PowerToys. And wouldn't you know it? That Windows PowerToys messed up my registry. (A different Tweaking tool/PowerToys I used before worked just fine.)

Then, when I tried to use System Restore, I found two C: drives listed. For one of them, it says C: 😢missing) and System Restore is enabled for it, but for my actual drive, it isn't enabled... SHIT. (That's clearly just a Windows bug.)

The fallout? Well, I'm having major issues with the system tray icons; they launch differently after every restart and I can't control it, though I did manage to reach some level of stability after a few reboots. The Task Manager icon blinks occasionally, but worst of all, the taskbar and the entire desktop—the whole screen—will sometimes, and quite frequently, flash as if a window is popping up from underneath...

So, things are broken. The taskbar icons are glitchy—that specific function is totally messed up and doesn't work like it used to.

Ultimately, I made this mess myself.

I don't think there's any way to fix it now—to repair the registry—since System Restore was disabled.

Even now, if I hit minimize, the icon on the taskbar occasionally just vanishes. It doesn't happen constantly, but it happens.

mvanb4 said:three main programs installed and at least 50 active processes, so it's no wonder things are getting messy.

Well, I have about 621 processes running, but I actually need most of them. I don't just install random junk for no reason (though I definitely messed up today because I was distracted, and I tend to move too fast without backing up my registry and such). I do uninstall programs when they stop being useful and clear out unnecessary startup items, etc.

So, things are finally settling down a bit. The blinking actually stopped, and I didn't even really do anything specific—I just closed Task Manager. The only thing is, when I try to bring it back up, that little icon won't reappear in my systray (I honestly love having that little graph there so I can keep an eye on my CPU usage at a glance), though I did run into a similar glitch right at the start when the installation was still pretty much pristine...

Basically, the situation has mostly resolved itself; it’s almost like the system just decided to fix its own issues 😁. And without even needing a restart, the blinking has ceased entirely—maybe it was just that animated Task Manager icon in the systray acting up all along.

I’m well aware of all those background processes running needlessly, but I really messed things up with this Windows Vista setup—it was honestly such a silly mistake. (I actually just reinstalled the software so I can see exactly what it changed in my settings; by default, it enables these various tweaks and "speed boosts" that mess with the core system, and since I just hit "OK" without thinking, everything executed 😁 . Now I’m going to dig through and try to toggle things off and back on again to see if I can fix it)

Anyway, thanks for the advice, but I’m basically doing everything you suggested—I just went a little overboard this time. I don't really have the bandwidth for a fresh installation right now, and frankly, I'm not feeling up to it, but if this keeps driving me crazy, I'll go ahead and do that (though I am wondering if the version you recommended has standard updates)

By the way, if anyone is interested, here is Top 12 Windows 7 Hacks you must know

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RC Build 7100!? What even is that? I skimmed through the post, and my rig should handle it just fine (AMD Athlon 64 X2, dual core, 2GB of 800MHz RAM, HD 3870...). Should I bother dropping any extra comments here, or what? I'm looking to install a new OS soon—Windows XP is such a classic, but this stuff is brand new...

It would probably be better if you just went with x86; maybe take a quick look back through the previous pages here.

As for my situation, things actually fixed themselves—almost entirely on their own. I can't quite pinpoint what did it, though I was tinkering around a bit myself, so I won't go into all that right now, but I can't say for sure if my tweaks were the cause... I thought the same thing this morning, but it came back after about five minutes. 😁 After that, I just put the machine to sleep, woke it up, and now it's been running perfectly for nearly ten hours—no stuttering or flickering at all.

Great, I'm really hoping this system stays reliable for a few more years.🙂

Man, you clearly have no clue... 😁
Back about two years ago, I actually managed to get Vista running on a Socket A rig. I had an Athlon 2000+, 384 MB of SDRAM, and a Radeon 9200 with 64 MB... and hey, it worked. Installed it perfectly fine... but honestly, I ripped it out after about six hours because I decided Vista was just total garbage... 😁

Don't give me that nonsense.
I tried running it on my
Socket A Athlon 2500+
with 256 MB of RAM
and a Radeon 9600SE
and I couldn't even get Vista to boot.
