I find myself wondering whether it is actually worth the trouble of installing the Windows 7 RC, or if I should simply wait for the final release to arrive; at the moment, I am still running Windows XP.

I actually downloaded the Windows 7 RC yesterday—it’s valid until April 1st, 2010, which should give you enough time to wait for the full official release. To be honest, this preview version feels significantly smoother than Vista SP1. Most of the drivers seem to install seamlessly through Windows Update, though I am still a little concerned about the niche hardware—specifically whether I can get away with using Vista drivers on Windows 7. Anyway, here is the link for the Windows 7 RC: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../download.aspx.

You can do whatever you want. It’s definitely an improvement over Vista. If an installation gives you any trouble, just run it in compatibility mode.

I'm sticking with this RC build—I don't plan on switching anytime soon, since I've been using it for a few years now 😁 (though, obviously, that's assuming nothing unexpected happens)

So, does it actually run flawlessly? I installed it on my laptop and everything functioned quite well for about a week. However, Vista is equally problematic on my laptop, and on my desktop, I was plagued by the occasional Blue Screen of Death for reasons I can't quite pinpoint. I find myself feeling somewhat apprehensive about Windows 7, even if its performance is objectively superior to Vista.

Honestly, just go ahead and install Windows 7—you really won't regret it.

The UI on Vista just looks better to me. It feels 😁
By the way, someone was bragging to me about running Windows 7.2... some random version number
Isn't the final build 7.100?

If you actually want the short version, here’s the breakdown:

32-bit processors: theoretically can address up to 2^32 memory units (4,294,967,296 = 4 GB)

64-bit processors: theoretically can address up to 2^64 memory units (18,446,744,073,709,551,616 = 17,179,869,184 GB = an absurd amount of gigabytes)

Sure, there are ways to force up to 64GB of RAM onto a 32-bit processor, but let me tell you—it's a disaster.

The reason I don't recommend it is simple: on a 64-bit OS, all those 32-bit applications run through an emulator, and they frequently run into issues. As for drivers? It's a total mess. It really just depends on what kind of work you're doing...

EDIT: You cut me off right when I was saying that 750MB would go to waste.😉[/COLOR]

Can someone tell me about the 7137 Enterprise x64?
It runs reasonably well, but I'm hitting a wall trying to install drivers for things like sound and graphics.
I've got a DFI Lanparty DK P45-T2RS Turbo motherboard, an Intel Quad 8200 processor, and an NVIDIA 9800GT graphics card. Does anyone know where I can find Windows 7 drivers for the audio and video? Thanks in advance.

I need to correct my previous post. While the drivers are fine, I’m lacking the necessary software. The last version I have is from Windows Vista, and even then, it doesn't support everything—for instance, the ABS program won't run, though the motherboard itself supports it starting from Windows Vista.

I'm just a little confused about one thing here.
For example—if I buy a PC and want to install Windows 7, am I really unable to do it unless I've already installed some other OS first?
Isn't that kind of stupid—unless, of course, I've completely missed the fact that you actually can?

Dude, didn't you get it? You don't even need to have an OS installed before this week!!!!

LOL.
Can someone tell me why?
I try to boot from a Windows 7 disc and nothing happens—it won't even start—but my old Windows XP machine picks it right up.

Can someone explain how this works?

As far as I know, Windows 7 won't fit on a standard CD; you're going to need a DVD.

Taylor Campbell4 said:If an installation just refuses to cooperate—and let's be honest, they often do—you might just have to run it in compatibility mode. I guess that's usually the only way to get things moving when the software decides it's too old for its own good.

It’s just not working—nothing is happening. I mean, seriously, I've tried everything and it simply won't go through. It's completely stuck. 😁

Just... just try to get an installation going, for instance—maybe try installing something like Alcohol 1.9.5.3105. Just give it a shot and see what happens.

First off, Windows 7 gives you a fair warning that it won’t work—but if you decide to be stubborn, try forcing it through Compatibility Mode and pushing ahead with the installation... well, enjoy the Blue Screen of Death, because Windows 7 is going to absolutely crash. Just my two cents, I guess.

Just try installing, say, the Alcohol 1.9.5.3105 version.

First, Windows 7 will warn you that you can't, and if you attempt to force it via compatibility mode and push through the installation—boom... blue screen and Windows 7 crashes.

I mean, I'm sure there are already fifty patches and cracks floating around online for this. I haven't actually needed to burn anything since I got Windows 7, but I'm fairly certain I could have sorted it out in half an hour.😁

Now I'm actually curious, so I did some surfing—honestly, forget half an hour, it would probably take five minutes.
As if you absolutely have to use that specific version of Alcohol, or Alcohol at all. (Because I heard Alcohol can completely wreck Windows Vista too, to the point where you can't even fix it—I don't know, someone mentioned that somewhere)
For example, check this: http://www.elitesecurity.org/t357185-0 This guy mentions having issues with Daemon Tools, but I haven't had any trouble with Daemon Tools whatsoever.

He also claims the Daemon Tools developers confirmed it doesn't work with Windows 7—whatever...🙄 I didn't have any real issues during installation (on Windows 7 Release Candidate)

And if you really want Alcohol and *only* Alcohol—well, just grab a newer version— http://www.zurkaforum.com/programi/a...s-7/msg565722/

Basically, everything is doable 🙂 ; there are plenty of solutions available on the American side of the web.
In my experience, any program that runs on Vista should run on Windows 7. Just be careful with those Vista tweak utilities—if you know what I mean—don't be reckless; make sure to back up your registry or create a restore point first.

It's a great OS. I get the feeling it's incredibly resilient and tough against various mishaps—it almost finds its own equilibrium... 🙂 Honestly, I'm not even sure what it would take to completely break it...

Look, everything is fine—I know perfectly well where to find updated software myself 😉—but my point is that this specific group of people on the American forums has been constantly repeating the exact same thing over and over again: "just switch it to compatibility mode and it'll work, easy peasy".

Well, it doesn't. 😁

Does anyone happen to have any insight into whether there is a viable way to resolve this issue...

this behavior has been occurring since version 1.7. on the Windows 7 beta 😢

It is truly devastating; I simply cannot bear the thought of being forced back onto Windows Vista.🙄

Why does Windows occasionally recognize my hard drive and then just completely ignore it? It’s happening more often than not lately—it shows up for a little while, disappears, and just keeps cycling through this loop for several days now...

It starts happening after version 1.7 on the Windows 7 beta 😢

Ugh, I really don't want to go back to Windows Vista. 🙄

I honestly wouldn't know—and frankly, I don't have the energy to hunt for answers online right now. But regarding the Windows Release Candidate (which you could have grabbed already, though maybe you still can via Microsoft's sites), the trial period runs until March 1st of next year. By then, I'd imagine people will have found plenty of ways to bypass those restrictions.
