Hey everyone! 🙂

So, I'm rocking Windows 7 Ultimate, but right now my machine is running on Windows XP. Does anyone know if I can just jump straight over to Windows 7 without having to mess around with Windows Vista first? Thanks a bunch in advance! 😉

P.S. Sorry to the moderator if I posted this in the wrong spot, I'm still pretty new here 🙏

Gary Cooper7 said:So, I decided to go ahead and install Windows 7 Ultimate—the latest updated one... so I have a few questions:
Is the installation process basically the same as XP, like booting from a CD and all that?
Given my specs, should I go with the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
And will my current programs and games from XP actually work?

I've been strictly on XP for about 6 years now, so I'm a bit out of the loop with everything else. Forgive me if these sound like rookie questions.

The Windows 7 installation was smooth sailing for me; it went pretty fast, even with a couple of restarts.

I opted for Windows 7 64-bit simply because my CPU supports it (Core 2 Duo).

Aside from needing to manually reinstall the Windows Live services (Messenger, mail), everything else runs more than fine.
I can't speak much to gaming, though, since I'm not really a "gamer"—better to let someone else weigh in on that.
It wouldn't hurt for you to check the software websites yourself to see if they have versions compatible with Windows 7.

Back everything up, boot from a CD, and just go for a clean installation!

Try going into the settings for your Realtek audio controller and check the box for "disable front panel jack detection."
That should do the trick; it'll allow both the rear and front audio jacks to work at the same time (so you can have headphones and speakers running simultaneously).

Problem solved, thanks!

But now I've run into a different snag. For some reason, I just can't get Logitech SetPoint to recognize my G5 mouse. It shows up perfectly fine in the Windows Device Manager, though—it's listed right there as a "Logitech HID-compliant G5 laser mouse."

I forgot to mention my rig is running a Quad 6600 at 2.4GHz, 3GB of RAM, and an HD 3870 graphics card....

If you want that transparency to actually kick in, you've got to go into the Windows Experience Index and run it. You need the system to "grade" your hardware first; only then will the Aero effects finally start working.
You'll see exactly what I mean from this screenshot.

I've already tried that, and it's just not it.😢

Noah Ruiz73 said:I think there are maybe two or three reasons why you're hitting this error. Either you spent the whole week installing this as an upgrade over Windows Vista—or even worse, over Windows XP—or perhaps you swapped out your graphics card after Windows 7 was already installed? If that happened, things could easily get messy.
Or, it’s possible you installed some kind of pirated or beta version, so I guess it's no surprise if things are breaking. 😁

Anyway, regardless of the cause—a full format followed by a clean installation is worth its weight in gold! 👍

Yeah, that third scenario is exactly what happened to me. I had Windows 7 running first, and then I put in a new GPU... I'd really love to find a workaround, but if I absolutely have to reinstall Windows 7, it looks like that's just what I'll have to do.

Wait, what do you mean by "clean"? Like, what does that actually involve?

He thinks he's just formatting the C drive—basically "wiping" Windows XP—while installing Windows 7.

I don't really see why you're trying to force it; just grab the SetPoint drivers online, install them, and you should be good to go.
I'm running a G5 on Windows 7 64-bit myself and everything works without a hitch.

Maybe you aren't using the specific Logitech SetPoint version meant for Windows 7.🤔

Check it out here to read about Windows 7 support for your Logitech gear (the G5 Laser Mouse IS supported, you just need SetPoint 4.80), and you can download the correct Windows 7 compatible version of SetPoint 4.80 (either 32-bit or 64-bit) 🙂right
here.

We're talking about this processor, right? 😉

"Instruction set 64-bit" 👍

That’s why I said... I honestly thought there wouldn't be much difference since I have 3 GB of RAM, which a 32-bit system can address just fine, so I figured it wasn't necessary. But whatever, I'll go ahead and install the 64-bit version anyway... finally getting to refresh my rig with some new Windows versions! I've had more than enough of Windows XP 😁

You can check here to see the official Windows 7 support details for your Logitech gear (the G5 laser Mouse is definitely supported, you just need SetPoint 4.80), and this link🙂 right here will let you download the correct Windows 7 compatible SetPoint 4.80 installer (available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions)

It works! I ended up installing version 5.20 because that's what they recommended to me. 😕
I really wish they would recommend the latest drivers for my Sapphire Radeon hd 3870 512 mb GDDR4, too. The last ones I found for Windows 7 seem to be acting a little glitchy on my end.

If only they’d recommend decent drivers for my Sapphire Radeon hd 3870 512 mb GDDR4. The latest ones for Windows 7 keep freezing on me.

Check Windows 7 here, hopefully you'll find what you're looking for; just pick your specific model, select Windows 7 (32- or 64-bit), and hit "Submit." 😉

I might be asking something that's already been covered, so bear with me—can I actually share folders over My Network Places between Windows XP and Windows 7? My girlfriend just installed Windows 7, but I'm still rocking Windows XP, so I was wondering if they can talk to each other.

I can't seem to toggle the AHCI setting in my BIOS. Why is that happening if Windows 7 already includes SATA drivers? Could it be because I accidentally enabled IDE mode before starting the installation

Just grab official ATi drivers. If version 9.10 isn't cutting it, try downloading an older release.

Yeah, you can. Works perfectly fine.
