Plus, the little mailbox is deep and stays locked. My sister-in-law always tucks a five or ten dollar bill inside during the holidays when she drops off a card, and there's just no way someone could grab that without us noticing. But whenever she shows up empty-handed, it’s like money magically appears in there... I honestly don't get how they find the cash left inside.😕 🤷

I'm guessing you're from a small town somewhere, maybe like rural Ohio or something? Since it's such a tight-knit area, why don't you just head down to the local Post Office and actually ask them what's going on?😉

And I’m just sitting here waiting... it’s been three and a half weeks since that letter was sent out from Seattle... if anyone actually bothered to move that mail along already, it would have arrived by now.

I have a question (again😉—I was thinking about sending over a little baby shirt and some tiny shorts, so can that go via standard mail? I’d rather not pay for a full package since the shipping would cost more than the actual clothes. Does anyone know the deal?? And what’s the going rate for those larger yellow envelopes—you know, the standard ones versus the padded bubble ones?)
Do I need to put a specific label on a package weighing around 2–5 lbs? I wrapped everything up and weighed it, only to find it’s exactly 2010 grams... heh, so now I have to classify it under that 2–5 lb bracket.🤣🤣

Thanks in advance.

You can send that via certified mail for about $12--$5.00 depending on the weight. Not that I'm going to suggest sending it as regular mail for maybe $2.00.😁 Those envelopes were around $1.00 last I checked...🤷 You can usually grab a whole pack at a bookstore or a CVS, which ends up being cheaper.

You should probably tape the package properly so the USPS clerk can actually accept it. If you don't, they might charge you extra at the counter because it isn't packaged according to the rules.😁 But honestly, it all depends on which specific post office you go to...

It looks like this is your first time doing this, so it’s probably best to just head down there, see how they handle things, and ask them directly.🙂

This isn't even my first time reaching out—it's just that they change their pricing every single time I deal with them... For instance, one clerk charged me $6.00 for a basic 800g package (which I personally wrapped and secured properly), while another lady decided to charge $6.75. Both were just standard shipments—nothing special or extra requested—and both had the exact same declared value of $17
.
😕🤷

Seriously, you guys need to go grab your receipts and actually look at what they’re charging you. If anything looks off, don't just sit there—react immediately.

How would you guys handle this...

I’ve sent out tons of stuff through the mail before without a single issue. Everything always arrives on schedule and people are happy.
But recently, I sent something out again—the lady didn't specify she wanted it tracked, just standard shipping—and it's been almost a week and she still hasn't received it.
Now I'm stuck in this spot where she's accusing me of scamming her, which isn't true at all. Every single transaction I've done, whether with the girls here on the forum or outside of it, has been totally fine.
Is it actually possible for people working at the post office to just pocket things and not deliver them, or what?

That’s exactly why I never ship anything via standard mail. People are always trying to talk me into it, telling me to just do it at my own risk, but I don't touch it.

I dealt with this exact thing once where a customer insisted I just use standard snail mail, and I made sure to tell them explicitly that they were doing so at their own risk...
The USPS isn't exactly bulletproof; packages go missing all the time, and unfortunately, when you ship that way, you don't get any actual proof of delivery, just a receipt from the counter—which isn't even real proof, really, it's just a piece of paper showing you paid.
You should just be very clear with your buyers that if they want to save a few bucks by opting for basic mail, they need to deal with the fallout themselves... it’s a risk they chose to take.
Personally, whenever I'm the one buying, I'd much rather pay an extra couple of dollars for tracking than end up stuck in a situation like this... 🤷

That's a messy situation. Though, maybe it'll still show up. Maybe it already arrived and she's just saying it didn't? Or maybe someone else grabbed it from her mailbox? From what I've noticed, regular mail gets lost easier because there's no insurance or compensation like there is with tracked packages if things get lost, damaged, or delayed. I just think they pay way more attention to registered shipments because of those rules. Everything I've ever sent has been tracked, mostly so nobody can claim I didn't send it or that they never got it, since there's proof for everything. I really don't know what happens with standard mail, but I'd definitely suggest only sending via tracked mail from now on, especially to people you don't know personally. Good luck.

Standard mail isn't reliable. Packages vanish all the time, and if you ship that way, you have zero proof of delivery. You might get a receipt from the post office, but honestly, that’s just a piece of paper—it doesn't prove anything actually happened.
Just tell your customer straight up: they wanted to save a few bucks by choosing regular mail, so now they can deal with the fallout. It was a risk they chose to take. That's on them.

I'm with you on that, but man, those situations are a total headache. No one has proof it was sent, no one has proof it arrived, nothing. And then there's the awkwardness of a seller having to explain things to a buyer... even though it was the buyer's call. Even if you warn them politely beforehand, most people will probably just never shop with you again after a mess like that. 🤷

Also, it makes zero sense to me. I would never ask someone to send anything important via regular mail just to scrape together a few cents of savings. 😕

I haven't heard of anyone getting a partial shipment yet. Plus, there’s zero paper trail to prove the contents actually match what was agreed upon or sent.
How are you even supposed to prove something was shorted? Does the USPS weigh it again at the local branch before it hits the recipient's doorstep?

But how do you even prove something like missing contents? I guess they'd have to weigh it at the USPS office before it gets delivered to the recipient?

To be honest, I hadn't really thought about it, and luckily it hasn't happened to me. But on that white slip you fill out for certified mail, the back side mentions that this is one of those cases where you can claim damages. I suppose weighing it at the post office wouldn't help much since the contents could go missing during transit too. It also says the recipient or an authorized person has to file a complaint for damage or missing items immediately upon delivery. I'm not entirely sure how you'd actually go about proving it, though. 🤷

Hey there, I have a few quick questions
So, I was wondering if it’s okay to just slide a standard ballpoint pen into a regular blue envelope?
Or maybe I should nestle it right in the middle of some papers so it doesn't poke through quite so easily, or is it fine to just send the pen on its own?
Also, regarding those yellow bubble mailers—can I just pop a pen in one of those, slap a stamp on it, and send it off without having to deal with the hassle of going to the Post Office to get it weighed? Or are those envelopes strictly meant for things that need to be weighed first?

It also says that the recipient or an authorized person has to file a complaint for damage or missing contents immediately upon delivery. So, uh, how you actually prove it, I'm not entirely sure🤷

Can someone who actually knows what they're doing weigh in here?

If weighing isn't the answer, and you have to file the complaint right when it's delivered, what's the actual move? Are we supposed to open it and inspect everything at the door right in front of the mail carrier or take it to the post office to check the contents?🤷

Should I wrap it up in some extra paper so it doesn't poke through, or is it fine to just let the pen sit there by itself?

Yeah, you can use a regular envelope. It’s really up to you if you want to pad it out with some extra paper or whatever to keep it from tearing through.
A bubble mailer works too. Honestly, since it’s just a pen, it’s so light you probably don't even need to worry about the weight.
Either way, it's just basic First-Class Mail—no tracking or anything special needed.

Hey everyone,

I could really use a bit of advice here. I need to ship a bulky down jacket out to San Francisco, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to pack it. Should I go with a sturdy cardboard box, or is there a better option?
I haven't actually sent anything this heavy before; usually, I just stick to those padded bubble mailers for smaller things.

Also, does anyone happen to know what the typical shipping rates look like for a package like this? Specifically, if I want it sent via registered mail from LA-SF, what am I looking at?

Thanks a million! 🙂

Also, if anyone knows roughly how much shipping would run for something like this via certified mail from LA to SF, let me know.

Thanks a lot 🙂

It’s definitely going to be pretty large; I remember sending a jacket once myself. Just toss it in a box. Send it as a package to $6.00.

I am somewhat inexperienced with these matters. I am sending a package and want to ask if the shipping cost increases if I use a larger box because there isn't a specific size available. I understand weight is a factor, but I noticed options for both small and large packages. What exactly does that distinction entail?

Thanks for getting back to me, 🙂
.
Just one more thing: can I just pick up a box directly at the Post Office, or am I going to have to hunt one down somewhere else?
