Zalman Z9 Plus case
Intel Core i3-2100
ASRock 970 Extreme motherboard

correctly installed plus a new cooler

$100 worth it, no sweat. It's still a top-tier processor.

mellowtiger83 said:Look, if you can snag it for a hundred bucks, no brainer—it’s still a killer chip.

But once you factor in the case...
we're looking at closer to 500 easy. $200

Something like that. A CPU for about $100, maybe a motherboard for 250...

Including the monitor, you might land $333, though without $233, it’s unlikely you'll find much better. Try looking on $333 or something similar, just an idea.

Hey, I need some help putting a price on this old rig.

Motherboard: Gigabyte ga-m56s-s3
RAM: 1+2 GB DDR2 800 Mhz
HDD: 160 GB Pata connector
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6 Ghz
GPU: ATI Radeon HD series 256 MB GDDR3 128-bit
Floppy drive
2x DVD drive Optiarc 7170S (reads CDs fine, but won't touch DVDs; apparently common for these older models)
PSU: A generic 400W unit, likely just whatever came with the case.
Case: An old Nasdaq style case that was actually decent back in the mid-2000s. Blue and white with a handle on top.

I'm not including the peripherals. Honestly, they're too worn out to even show anyone.😁
The monitor is newer, so I'm keeping that.

If someone handed you $500 right now, you’d be doing pretty well. Honestly, whatever comes your way... just take care of business.

I've got a Dell Inspiron laptop here that’s a little over five years old, but honestly, it still runs perfectly fine.

Processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.0 GHz
2 GB RAM
Graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 with 512MB
320GB HDD
The battery is actually in pretty decent shape since I mostly kept it plugged into the wall most of the time.

Do you think I could get $167 for this?

I think you could probably pull in about $667 for it. Honestly, it’s still a solid setup.

What’s a fair price for this setup:
i3 3.3GHz
GTX 650
4 GB RAM
500 GB HDD
19" or 20" monitor

Is $500 asking too much?

That might be overkill...
Which specific i3 are we talking about, what motherboard is in play, and what kind of monitor (what's the resolution)...

I'm not entirely sure, a buddy just sent over the specs.
Either way, we're talking right on the edge of the budget, I suppose.
The guy is looking to move it for $500.

It isn't much. What else would you get for $500? You could pick up a brand new Core i7 with 4GB of RAM, integrated graphics, and no monitor at all for that kind of money. This setup for $500 includes an i3, it comes with a monitor, and—get this—it actually has a decent graphics card. The price is more than reasonable.

I mean, I’m leaning that way too, but I figured I’d ask just to be sure.

The PC is worth the asking price, especially considering the monitor is included, but that doesn't mean there isn't a better deal out there for less, nor does it mean you can't try to negotiate down by fifty or a hundred bucks.

It’s a bit disappointing to hear that we're looking at a dual-core processor here.

Look, all i3 processors are dual-core, but they feature Hyper-Threading, which gives you 4 threads. The real question is which generation we're talking about, because an i3 from six years ago is a completely different beast compared to a modern one.

The PC is currently parked in my kid's room (read: teenage chaos zone).

I managed to get my hands on the mouse and keyboard, but no speakers yet. Everything is set for $500.
The monitor is a Dell Monitor—a 19-inch model.
The processor is an Intel Core i7 at 3.30 GHz.
It’s running a GeForce GTX 650 with 4 GB of RAM.
So, everything matches what was listed.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Now I just need to spend some time tinkering with it.
By the way, this computer came from a small town in the Midwest near Indianapolis. The kid is actually heading off to Germany this Friday.
There are four others going with him. Honestly, it feels like everyone just ☕.
