Looking for an appraisal on this PC. It’s six years old.

Roughly +/- (I don't track used market prices too closely)

CPU - up to $83
RAM - $50
Motherboard - up to $50
GPU - could be a 5750 or 5770, but mostly looking at up to $67
DVD-RW - 50/$20
Monitor - approximately 350-$133 max
HDD - up to $67 max

Keep in mind there's also a case and power supply, which you can't verify via software

@The New Guy

That's probably cutting it too close... if I recall correctly, an HD 5750 won't go for less than $100, maybe $83 at most. Same goes for the CPU. Since RAM prices have jumped quite a bit over the last couple of months, you might need to budget about $67 for that too.

People are actually out here $100 selling 560Tis...
Some guy over at the Communist Party USA just offloaded a 560Ti for $73 damn 😁

It’s basically a total waste of money compared to a 5750 or 5770, but hey, I guess it doesn't cost him anything to try his luck.

What kind of cash could I pull for this?

If the case is clean and actually looks decent, you might pull maybe $800—$333honestly, don't expect much more than that.

By the way, those temps look a bit high. 75C on the CPU is pushing it, and even an old cooling setup shouldn't be struggling that much.

Someone mentioned a 560ti earlier; that card would fit this build perfectly 🙂, making it a pretty solid mid-range gaming rig for a reasonable price.

Hey there,

I was hoping you guys could give me a ballpark figure on what this used setup is worth—and more importantly, how it actually holds up for gaming these days? Most of it is still under warranty, too...
Thanks

""It’s running an i5 4690k paired with integrated hd4600 graphics, 8GB of 2400MHz RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. It has a brand new 550W 80+ certified power supply and a black Zalman Z3+ case I picked up recently. There's a dual-layer DVD drive in there that looks like a Samsung unit... the motherboard should be a z87ah2, which I believe has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so you can connect your phone wirelessly since it's running macOS. It also comes with an original NOD32 antivirus license valid for another two years, if I recall correctly. Basically, everything is still covered by warranty just in case anything goes sideways.""

By the way, those temps are too high. Is 75C really okay for a CPU? It certainly isn't cold.

Someone mentioned a 560ti earlier. Wouldn't that fit this build perfectly? 🙂 It’d make a decent mid-range gaming rig.

What if I take it apart, blow it out with compressed air, and swap the thermal paste? It hasn't seen a repair shop in years...

I could really use some help here (assuming this is even a known issue). You should try checking those temperatures using a different software package—I once saw a guy where Speccy was reporting over 100°C on his 1151 motherboard 🤣

You probably have a layer of carpet buildup under the fan and dust bunnies everywhere inside, 😁but honestly, just tell Mary how long this thing actually stays running without a reboot or a shutdown. It’s a rhetorical question. Just be honest.👍

Look, the processor is decent enough, but without a dedicated graphics card, you aren't going to get much gaming done on this machine. You're really going to need a separate GPU—something in the ballpark of an rx 470/480 gtx 1060/1070—and then you could probably run pretty much any game you want at 1080p resolution...

As for the motherboard, I'm honestly not sure which one it is—I tried Googling it but couldn't find a match. Maybe try downloading Speccy to see the actual manufacturer? Regarding the RAM, it’s solid; 8GB is still plenty for gaming these days..

Is this used setup even worth $1000?

Look, $1000 it’s true—you might save a few hundred bucks here or there—but have you actually checked the specific motherboard model? It can be tricky. Honestly, if you still have your receipts, you should look at what you originally paid for all those components... after all, as time goes by, you basically have to factor in a 10% drop in value from the original invoice. If you know what I mean...

A rhetorical question doesn't require an answer, does it? 😵 😉

So, I run it for maybe five or six hours before shutting it down for the night. Now it stays on for two hours, and the CPU temperature is hitting 78°C. I even uninstalled CoreTemp, but CPU-Z shows the exact same thing. What am I supposed to do with that?

Is it really a rug if I only clean it once every ten months? Hardly.
Well, that's it. I'll blow out the dust, apply some new thermal paste, and we'll see what happens.

Well, I typically run it for about five or six hours before shutting it down for bed. Right now, it’s been running for two hours and the CPU temp is sitting at 78°C. I uninstalled CoreTemp, but it's showing the exact same thing as CPU-Z.

It's certainly not the carpet underneath; I clean it out every ten months or so.
Anyway, I'll just blow the dust out and reapply some thermal paste and see what happens.

Just go buy a decent cooler, overclock that Intel Core i3-2100, and stop worrying 🙂, your temps are way too high

Fresh thermal paste applied. Temps sitting at roughly 55°C now. 😁

A 23°C drop just from the paste?🤔 Either you didn't have any on there to begin with, or you managed to singe the chip a little bit. Heh.👍

It was already burnt, wasn't it? Haha. 🤦.
Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can flip this and pick up something new in the near future. 😉
