Don't wash your hair during your period?!? WTF

I was chatting with a friend this morning about our plans for tonight. She’s on her period. In the middle of our conversation, she starts staring at her hair, complaining about how greasy and lifeless it looks, but says she can't wash it. 😲 I was completely baffled. I asked her why not. She told me that you aren't supposed to wash your hair or even take a shower while you're on your period. Apparently, her grandmother told her that, and she won't touch any of it during those days. 😕
Now, I’ve been having my period for eight years. I am fairly certain these are just old wives' tales. I shower and wash my hair regularly during my cycle. I have never faced any consequences—not that I know what they would even be. Honestly, it seems like a matter of basic hygiene to me. 🤷 What are your thoughts? Did your grandmothers ever nag you with these kinds of stories?

I go about my routine—showering and washing my hair—without any issues at all. The only real truth to the whole thing is that you definitely shouldn't try to dye your hair or get a perm during those specific days, because the results just won't hold. I honestly can't explain the science behind why, but it’s true...

Well, I told her that too. Her response was that I might not have problems right now, but I will eventually—in a year, two years, or ten... okay, fine.🙄

The only thing is that your flow might pick up slightly while you're washing your hair if it's the first day of your period. I've experienced this firsthand. 😁 Otherwise, most of these claims are just nonsense. Imagine going 4 to 7 days without washing your hair, not to mention dealing with that metallic blood smell. It's disgusting.

So, it's not like your parents ever sat you down to talk about this stuff.🙄

I don't buy it. I only started this thread to show her the truth and hopefully get some sense into her head. Personally, I would feel absolutely revolted with myself if I didn't shower for five days straight. Not to mention how everything would start to smell sour. 😂

So, here’s how they explained the whole thing to me:
Back in the day—way before everyone had access to every high-end hair product imaginable—hairstyles were all about that heavy lacquer, the massive teasing, and those perfect blowout looks. If a woman decided to wash her hair while she was on her period, there was actually a real chance the style just wouldn't hold up quite as well when she tried to redo it—probably some weird hormonal thing, I guess!🤷
Plus, let's be honest, people just weren't washing their hair nearly as often back then...

I’ve heard plenty of old wives' tales and superstitions about how you shouldn't wash your hair during that time, but honestly? I’ve been washing my hair on day one of my period since forever and I’ve been perfectly fine... I think it all just comes down to the individual's constitution or whatever.

My mother was raised the exact same way. That’s just how things were taught back then, but obviously, we know better now.
Honestly, I don't get why everyone is getting so worked up about this. There are countless examples like this from the past that we just laugh at today because people simply didn't have the right information back then. It makes me wonder—if my mother's mother were sitting here right now, what on earth would she say to my 9-year-old son if he actually asked her what a period is?
