What's a fair price for a small home VHS collection?

The format isn't really the point when you're talking about a single movie. Nobody was out here complaining about saving shelf space.

Well, honestly, five hundred tapes would take up quite a bit of room..

I was speaking in general terms here. Just consider the physical space one VHS tape occupies. Think about how many CDs you could fit in that same spot... without even getting into a comparison with a hard drive.

The whole space-consuming thing is a harsh reality, but honestly, I still have a soft spot for my cassettes. I’ll probably pick up a few more when the right chance comes along. And then, well, I'll have to figure out where to put them 😬 since the ones I have already taken up an entire shelf.
I have a mountain of my own recordings, though I don't particularly care for them... there are three or four different movies crammed onto a single tape, the quality is usually pretty hit-or-miss, and it's just a mess without any real organization. It drives me crazy because I need everything to be in alphabetical order 😁. Right now, they're just sitting at the bottom of the closet. 🙂

Cassettes were fine enough until about five years ago, I guess. But DVDs offer way more content. It’s probably time to just let VHS rest in peace 😁

The only thing that scares me is when DVD becomes the next VHS. Just when you finally manage to pull together a decent collection of movies, suddenly Blu-ray and HD-DVD come knocking at your door

Personally, I think it’s way better when every movie has its own little home... 😬
I don't really care for that whole thing where people just pile up DivX files onto a bunch of DVDs...
Isn't there something kind of nice about walking into a friend's place and seeing everything organized perfectly on the shelf, just waiting for you to pick something out? 🤣
I guess I just don't feel like movies are meant to be gathered up like decorative coasters or something! 😎

Go down to a local video rental shop and permanently borrow some VHS tapes for $1.75. I’ve been watching Straight Story on my own collection for a while now, but looking at the mountain of DVDs in my drawer, I simply can't find any more room for extra tapes or VHS cassettes.

I feel like VHS is basically the last stronghold for true cinephiles... these DivX files have completely sucked the joy out of rewinding... that specific smell of the tape... the sheer hunt for a certain movie

Nowadays, you can grab pretty much anything with just two clicks... which is great, obviously
but there's still this lingering memory of being back in Sweden, waiting on those VHS tapes of Romero's zombie flicks... wondering if the mailman would actually show up, if they'd get damaged in transit, or if I'd even be able to get them to play... you know how it goes... naturally, I’d watch them the second they arrived... one time I scored nearly 100 movies at once... didn't get through them until 2012. 😁

But today? Every kid gets their hands on a Romero film during some mindless swap where they trade 50 DVD for 50 DVD without having any clue what kind of cinema they're actually holding...

And don't even get me started on the future—my entire collection, which I'm currently struggling to migrate over to DVD, will probably all end up sitting on some random thumb drive or a DVD after the whole Blu-ray or HD craze passes

Let’s be real, VHS is anything but a sanctuary for true cinephiles.
Watching every single movie butchered into a 4:3 aspect ratio with a measly 256 lines of resolution is just straight-up torture. It’s like listening to a song and having someone strip out the vocals halfway through. Honestly, thank God for DVD, digital, and all the modern tech we have now.
Plus, you can actually track down almost any movie ever made, which is a total game-changer.

I’m definitely on board with what Lawrence Booth2 said. Honestly, renting a movie on Blockbuster feels a lot like playing those old vinyl records; you know, when you pop them on and get that little bit of crackle and background hiss? I guess a VHS had its own kind of soul too, sort of in the way the tracking would jitter or how those yellow subtitles looked.
