How much do you guys care about word choice?

So, I’ve been wondering—when you’re listening to instrumental or ambient tracks where there’s basically zero lyrical content, does it even register for you? Like, do the lyrics actually matter, or are they just the ultimate benchmark you use to decide if a song is a masterpiece or total garbage? I mean, do you actually need to grasp every single word to feel it?
It's like knowing people who don't have a clue how to speak Italian but will absolutely vibe out to some Eros Ramazzotti track without missing a beat. 😬
Or what about those moments when you realize someone did a "cover," but they did it in such a DIY, homemade way that it barely bears any resemblance to the original version?
Basically, what’s the deal: are you here for the music and the instruments, or is it all about the lyrics? Or maybe one of your favorite artists treats their voice less like a vehicle for storytelling and more like just another instrument in the mix, where the actual meaning of the words doesn't even matter as long as the vocals hit right? 😁 Personally, for me, the lyrics are huge, 😬 but then again, if I've got someone like Bruce Springsteen beltin' it out... honestly, I could almost not care what he's saying at all.

Lyrics matter a lot to me—but honestly, if the song isn't polished up right, the words don't even matter. When I'm listening to international music, I pretty much stick to English-speaking artists; I just can't get into music when I can't grasp what's being said. If I stumble upon a track I love but the lyrics are a bit fuzzy, I’ll just go ahead and look them up online.

The vocals should always serve the music—period. If you're looking for poetry, go hit up the local library; that’s just my two cents.

If the lyrics hit hard, cool.
If they don't? Whatever, still fine.
The words themselves? Zero percent importance.
At the end of the day, it's just about the music...

Words can definitely ruin a song—especially if the person behind them doesn't exactly have a knack for songwriting. But honestly? The perfect antidote is just cranking up the volume. 🙂

It seems you have a rather superficial grasp of music—and poetry, for that matter...

I mean, I love it when they actually turn out well—it just makes the song hit different. Sometimes even a track that usually feels a bit off can end up being pretty good if the quality is there.

If they suck, though... whatever. No big deal.

Look, say I’m hanging out at the local drive-in—the music they play is actually decent enough—but the second those lyrics hit my ears, I honestly feel like I'm going to gag.

I just can't listen if I'm feeling off

It completely ruins the vibe of the song

I don't know, maybe for me... Crazy Day by Skreć Esida felt kind of mid until I read the lyrics. Now it's actually good, mostly because the words are so gut-wrenching and they just fit the music perfectly. The tunes themselves are probably a bit mediocre, though.

I don't care about the lyrics. Not even close. Guess it's because I've got that musical background... the actual sound is what matters to me. Harmonies, melody, modulations, layers of texture—that's where the real magic is. Yeah. I dig music in languages I don't even speak, even though my vocabulary isn't exactly huge.

It’s fine by me if the lyrics are solid, I suppose. But honestly, I rarely find myself focusing on them specifically. If the music isn't hitting the right notes, then the whole thing just goes straight into the trash for me. At the end of the day, the songwriting doesn't really play a huge role in my listening experience.

Here’s the deal—someone like Morissette and her crew might just strip everything down... sometimes you hit upon a flawless piece of writing, and other times you end up looking like a complete idiot. But honestly? None of that matters when someone like Jon Mar churns out a million melodies anyway.

I won't even get into the metal scene here... but for me, the sonic experience depends entirely on actually being able to decipher what the vocalist is singing... not 😁

They’re just throwing money around at this point, so I honestly have no idea what they're even playing at.
