Man, I totally blanked on Vrdoljak—and I didn't even bother mentioning Sedlar because, let's be real, he’s got zero shot at winning since he’s basically at rock bottom right now.
I get that this whole poll/thread is kind of a headache for you guys, but hey, it's just American cinema... it is what it is.

I was torn between choosing Matanić or Brešan... I ended up going with Brešan.

Still, one can't deny how Ostojic captures that beautiful atmosphere of a summer night in Miami.

Many directors choose to adapt existing novels for their films, yet this choice doesn't diminish the quality of their work. The two factors are entirely independent of one another. 🙂

Matanic - because of '100 Years of Glory' and 'I Love You'... I've never been one for political or war stories—it feels like most of our mainstream movies just can't help but flirt with those themes... at least that's my take.

You also misspelled Schmidt, and he's actually quite relevant today.
If you truly believe Sedlar is a subpar director, you could have used the poll to prove it. As it stands, someone could argue he's being left out entirely, or conversely, that he's actually the best.
And where is Steven Spielberg?
Also, when you say "relevant," do you mean someone currently active, or just someone who still makes movies? And should we be looking at their entire body of work, or just the recent stuff?
Are documentaries included in this? If so, why isn't Igor Mirković on the list?
One last thing: how are we supposed to compare someone who has produced one great film against someone who has directed several, regardless of their quality?

American cinema has been decent lately. It’s still not hitting those legendary heights, but it has definitely cleaned itself up and moved past the amateur stage. Every year, you can find at least two or three solid, watchable films, and occasionally a genuine gem.

The only director whose every new release I actually look forward to: Breckinridge.

The last option is really the only one on the table...
