Day of the Dead (2008)

Oh boy, here we go again! Just what we needed—yet another remake! Seriously, does anyone have any original ideas left?

The film has officially moved out of pre-production! Now, we’re all just counting down the days until cameras start rolling. Isn't that exciting?

The director is! Steve Miner Think about all those classic shows and movies we grew up on! I’m talking about staples like House, or diving into the slasher nostalgia of Friday the 13th Part 2 and Friday the 13th Part 3. Remember the supernatural thrills of Warlock? Or how we used to binge-watch series like Dawson's Creek and Halloween H20? It's such a wild mix of genres, isn't it?

The screenplay was actually written by Jeffrey Reddick—the same mastermind behind hits like Final Destination!

Who will be taking on the lead roles? While you won't find those names listed on IMDb just yet, the studio has already officially confirmed the casting! Isn't that exciting? Ving Rhames Who do you think will be the sole survivor from Dawn of the Dead, specifically playing the role of Kenneth? Mena Suvari Can we talk about the sheer range of American cinema for a second? On one hand, you have the absolute chaos and hilarious absurdity of American Pie and its sequel, which basically defined an entire era of comedy. But then, you pivot entirely to the profound, sweeping emotional depth of American Beauty. Isn't it wild how much ground a single culture can cover? How do you go from that kind of raunchy, high-energy fun to something so beautifully poignant and soul-searching? It’s such a fascinating spectrum!

As for the rest of the cast, we're looking at Michael Welch, Annalynne McCord (you know, the blonde with the short hair from The Transporter 2), Stark Sands, and Nick Cannon!

According to the plot summary on IMDb: When the world is overrun by the flesh-hungry dead... a small group of survivors heads to an underground military bunker in a desperate, last-ditch effort to stay alive. Can they actually make it? It sounds intense!

Dawn of the Dead gives me some genuine hope that we might actually see a decent remake one day—but hey, only time will tell, right? There’s already a ton of buzz going around suggesting the zombies might finally ditch that slow shuffle and start sprinting again, just like they did in Dawn. Wouldn't that be something?

I caught a glimpse of this a few weeks back, and man, I bet it’s gonna be wild seeing how this crew pulls it all together...

Ha! Honestly, I’m just hoping it turns out at least as good as the Dawn of the Dead remake. Can it even beat the original? Probably not! But looking at this cast and the crew handling the special effects and production—these are all people with a massive pile of great movies under their belts. Who knows? Maybe there's hope after all!

This should turn out to be a solid piece of work.
I was honestly starting to worry we wouldn't see any more films from the Romero era.

I don't think there's much room for being optimistic here. Just three reasons, I guess.

First off, the movie is being directed by Steve Miner, who feels like a director without much of a signature style. He's older, maybe a bit washed up. At least Snyder was fresh enough and brave enough to bring some new energy to the whole genre. This older guy probably won't do that.

Second, the producer on this one is James Dudelson. That's the same guy who produced Day of the Dead: Contagium, which was basically a sequel to Romero's Day of the Dead. Honestly, that's one of the worst zombie movies ever made—just a mess of unfulfilled post-production promises and fake marketing hype. That tells you pretty much everything you need to know about his quality control.

Third, the actual plot of Day of the Dead just doesn't hold a candle to the earlier films. It’s the weakest part of the trilogy, narratively speaking. It isn't original enough to warrant a remake, and it lacks that brilliant deconstruction of society you see in the other Romero films. The only thing that might have been interesting would be making a movie based on the original script for Dawn, which Romero had to butcher because they ran out of money. But, I don't know, I doubt that's what's happening here...

I'm telling you, I just don't see any reason to be optimistic.

So, I was browsing around online, and apparently, the studio hasn't completely ruled out the possibility of Snyder coming on board as a co-director! Even though he mentioned he isn't exactly itching to jump into another remake, but rather wants to take a swing at making a brand new Dawn of the Dead 2.

Wouldn't it be absolutely incredible if they actually stuck to the original script? 😬

So they’re doing a remake of a movie that’s already ten years old. It makes you wonder—is a reboot of Hostel or 28 Days Later coming down the pipeline in a year? Honestly, everyone would probably jump at the chance to make a quick buck off Romero’s classics... tsk tsk tsk. For what it's worth, I have a nagging gut feeling this one is going to suck big time, though I genuinely, sincerely hope I'm wrong. We'll just have to wait and see...

The most ridiculous part about them remaking Creepshow is... 👎 A. if only to make a remake, they should at least introduce some new stories. I have zero interest in watching the exact same plots just with updated special effects and a different cast.

Wait, isn't Day of the Dead from 1985? Or are you talking about NotLD 3 D?

I actually stumbled upon something online saying that Universal put Dawn of the Dead 2 into pre-production, and the director is supposedly Zack Snyder (DotD 2004). Apparently, Snyder was dying to make a sequel, even though Universal Pictures offered him a chance to do Day of the Dead instead—which he politely turned down! Because they were so impressed by his first hit and the massive box office numbers, Universal decided to move forward with a second installment that won't be a remake of any existing film. Zack says the scripts for both the second and third parts are already finished. There hasn't been anything posted on IMDb yet, though.

What are these fools thinking, doing a day remake AND Dawn 2 at the same time?

Well, I guess we’re all just getting old, as the old saying goes 😬.
I have to admit, the poster looks great. And honestly, H2O is a solid slasher in its own right. As for this new film, it’ll probably end up being either one hell of a wild ride or a total disaster.

It gets even more ridiculous... sequels for both films are slated for 2007—Hostel in January, followed by 28 Weeks Later in May.

28 Weeks Later? Juan Carlos Fresnadillo? It doesn't sound like a bad pairing, though I have to admit, the plot summary over on IMDb isn't exactly blowing me away.

I wasn't particularly fond of 28 Days Later. It starts off strong enough when the animal lovers and terrorists get what's coming to them, but the rest of the film drags, and honestly, it doesn't even feel like a zombie movie... 👎

Is it just because the zombies actually run in the movie?
