I feel like you can't really call yourself a good person if you don't dig Housewife. They're basically the Buzzcocks of the cookie world. 🙂

😁 😁

1. I was a firsthand witness to the birth of the death metal subculture in Chicago, which revolved largely around the local club scene. It was a long-haired youth spent running in circles, shredding on air guitars, and headbanging in black Earache t-shirts. Zelig was just being a nuisance. Zzzz.

2. Swedish got hooked on death metal (the name almost sounds like death disco), so I diligently worked my way through the Earache and Roadrunner Records rosters, along with some thrash staples like Slayer and Metallica.

3. To be honest, the revolutionary "Reign in Blood" used to bore me. But ever since they cleaned up their thrash image and leaned harder into that NYC hardcore sound...

4. A few years back, while staying in some hotel room during an official tour, I found myself strangely entertained by an old Metallica video—maybe a music video or a metal ballad? There’s a guy lying on his deathbed, the atmosphere is grim, the guys are playing guitars with expressions as serious as death, and it feels like it lasts for eternity. And I was just sitting there feeling miserable.

5. I loved the concept behind Carcass, but the actual music... man, it stank like a rotting corpse. Swedish headed off to a concert in San Francisco, leaving me stuck in this gray, sleepless city.

6. Sepultura earns a few points for that whole apocalypse-from-the-jungle vibe. They didn't quite infect me, though. Apparently, I'm supposed to listen to "Roots."

7. For a while, I actually considered Pestilence's "Testimony of the Ancients" to be a solid album.

8. Black Metal? Brrr... I only read about that stuff in the crime sections of the newspaper.

9. Because of the death metal mania, I completely neglected Godflesh. What a tragedy.

10. I eventually realized that Napalm Death's "Scum" is absolute perfection, but even that is a far cry from the true essence of metal.

Metal is honestly just like hardcore pornography: it's thrilling for ten, fifteen, maybe twenty minutes, and then it gets boring. Fast forward, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, stop. The DVD is greasy and keeps skipping.

Zelig just doesn't get metal (jazz).

Help!

I honestly think you can't claim to be a decent human being if you don't have respect for Housewife. Housewife is basically the Buzzcocks of the cookie world. 🙂

I'm with you on that.
But look, when you take a bite, you should actually taste the chocolate, not just a sugar rush.

My ultimate comfort food rankings:

1. Bean soup with meat and some sauerkraut or maybe turnip greens—that's the winner.
2. Honestly, just any kind of bean dish.
3. Collard greens.
4. Leeks.
5. Literally anything else.😁

I’d suggest adding spinach to the milk base, and especially pumpkin—that’s easily my number one pick for stews (assuming we move beans to a separate category for heavy hitters like chili)... Leeks are surprisingly good, too.

Now we're talking!

I’ve actually never tried anything made from pumpkin—I went looking for some at the farmer's market the other day to make a pie, but they didn't have any in stock.

First time I'm ever hearing about this😲—as someone who is basically a fanatic when it comes to "spoonable food," I would love some details here!?!?

I mean, I’ve done spring zucchini casseroles before, but this whole "squash mashup" thing sounds like something else entirely🙂

Are we talking about savory pumpkin mash or the sweet kind?
Back where my uncle is from (down in the Midwest), they usually make it sweet, and I think that's the 🙏
version. But where my mom's family is from (over in the Mississippi Delta), they go with the savory style, which is... well, it's alright, I guess.

Dana Anderson4 said:Maybe... but then those motor biscuits are at least Skids territory.😁

Ecce homo! 🙏 🙏 🙏

(Mind you, I've only ever really heard that song by the Skids, but it carries more weight than, say, four entire discographies from a band like The Stranglers).

Speaking of pumpkin soup, my mother makes a damn fine version. You peel the pumpkin, grate it, and then boil it down in a proper roux—add some milk, chop up a pepper, and it’s perfection. Honestly, I need to get the exact procedure from her, because whoever ends up with me is going to need to be able to whip up a pumpkin stew just as good as my mother's. 🙏 🙏 🙏

I have zero patience for any other way of preparing pumpkin, squash, or eggplant.

Once, at a bakery near Chicago, they "treated" me to a meat burek that had me retching for hours in the privacy of my own home. 🙂 Kill!
