I’m a huge fan of anime, but The Animatrix is definitely a commercial American production...
Here are some recommendations: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Oh My Goddess!, 2001: A Space Odyssey (from that thread about movies we can't remember the names of), the Furi kura series—and maybe Mononoke too—and of course, POKÉMON!!! 👍

Honestly, I’ve wanted to put together one really solid, comprehensive thread about anime for a long time now, but I just don't have the time, the energy, or the coordination with Kozz to actually get it done... and I guess I just haven't found the time.

Well... I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a die-hard fanatic, but honestly? Everything I've managed to watch has been absolutely top-tier! 👍

Moron, anime isn't just "cartoons." 🙄
Anime is simply anime.
Just like "manga" is manga. It's a specific medium, not some damn synonym for "sugary sweet kids' shows." 🙄
But let's move past the self-proclaimed connoisseurs of the Japanese animation scene and their narrow-minded delusions.
We're actually here to recommend a few more absolute masterpieces from the talented hands of our far-eastern friends to you common losers.
First off, besides all that mainstream shit most people latch onto (read: Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Princess whatever), it would be worth mentioning the visually stunning martial arts title by Watsuka Nobuhiro—"Kenshin."
A powerful story, top-tier animation, an incredible soundtrack, and voice acting so lifelike they ensured Kenshin achieved cult status even during its initial run.
In Japan, obviously.
Never here in the States.
Because why would we care about some random "effeminate cartoons"?
Let the kids watch old war movies, Mexican soap operas, or classic American Westerns instead.
Let them build some actual grit...

Alright, now that we've told that idiot where to go, we can move on.
The next title worthy of attention is, believe it or not, "Neon Genesis Evangelion."
A fantastic little tale about wild mechs (read: giant robots that got tired of being exploited by humans for sexual purposes—wait, what?!?), primordial love, happiness, and all sorts of other things typical of Japanese mythology and their darker psychological depths.
The third title is, as I mentioned before, Arthur Johnson50's favorite: "Dragon Ball."
In the land of the rising sun, it ran for eleven full seasons and smashed every viewership record in sight.
To put it bluntly, what "Home Improvement" is to you today, "Dragon Ball" was back in the nineties.
Thirty minutes of pure nirvana.
For the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots, we could easily list the genre's pioneers, such as: "Astro Boy," "Grandizer," or maybe "Robotech."
Sure, we could.
But we won't.
Purely out of principle.
Something has to be left for the next time.

I’ve definitely binged my fair share of anime over the years, and honestly, I don't just stick to the movies—I mean, Sailor Moon is absolute perfection, no contest!😍
If I had to pick my holy trinity, though, it would have to be Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, and Cowboy Bebop; those three are easily my all-time favorites.😬

Look, MH isn't even one of my absolute favorites despite being by Hayao Miyazaki, but you're telling me Metro isn't good??? 😲 🙂 😁 It still holds the #1 spot for me today. And honestly, the manga is worth a read.

The issue with Akira is this: they cram 6 freaking volumes of manga 😲 into a 2-hour movie… seriously. 🙄 That seems to be a super common problem with anime films. You watch it and it just doesn't land right, and then someone comes up to you and says, “Well, yeah, you need to read the manga…”
Akira really is a bit too sprawling to be condensed into such a "short" film, but I still think Katsuhiro Otomo did a solid job. He managed to convey some things well from the manga, and he was able to "cover" other parts effectively so the story still feels relatively coherent. In any case, it leaves enough room for the viewer to actually use their brain and try to figure some things out for themselves, rather than having everything spoon-fed to them on a silver platter 😉 and I appreciate that about Akira 👍 although, I'll admit, it's not at the top of my list of favorite movies.
As for the animation and technical aspects, I don't even want to get into it because it's simply perfect. 🙏 It's worth spending 2 hours of your time just to watch Akira for the animation alone.
Otherwise, if we ignore the animation, the movie is a bit tough to sit through, especially if you aren't into cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic vibes, or the whole setting of the film. It's not exactly something you'd put on a Sunday afternoon to relax after lunch or something you'd watch with a group of friends. (IMHO)
Anyway, I know it sounds stupid, and I hate saying it myself, but seriously—try to find and read the manga.

The first series is great. But Dragon Ball Z, which I'm watching right now, is a disaster…. my god… it's some of the worst stuff I've ever seen. And I've watched trash like Alien, Ninja Resurrection, and Eatman 98, yet DBZ ranks just slightly above those.😲
