There are plenty of solid movies out there,
but honestly, The Fifth Element feels like—if it isn't my absolute favorite—it's definitely right up there with the best sci-fi ever made.
The imagery just sticks with you.
Everything about the world-building works—from those massive, vertical megacities where people live stacked high in skyscrapers,
with that perpetual smog clinging to the streets below, to the way they get around using those hovering car-shaped pods and flying boats,
and even the weird little domestic details, like living rooms with button-operated boat beds or having a shower on a completely different floor,
not to mention the whole concept of space tourism and those multi-purpose gadgets that work at the touch of a button...
It’s just great stuff.
Hard to top this one, even for someone like Luc Besson.🙂

That one is my absolute favorite.

I've been collecting these over the years, so picking a top 3 is actually pretty tough. But I'll just throw out a top 5...

It's emotional and philosophical. Rutger Hauer delivers a performance that hits you on a metaphysical level.

Solaris "Highway scene"

That one scene alone proves how massive Andrei Tarkovsky was in every sense. And Eduard Artemiev absolutely nailed the score.

Alien "Space Jockey"

Giger's creations feel truly alien. When you see that fossilized Space Jockey at the end, you instantly want to know more about him.

2001: A Space Odyssey "HAL 9000 Deactivation"

Life is life, even when it involves a foreign AI. The whole movie is packed with incredible scenes.

Back to the Future - The DeLorean

It's every kid's dream come true: traveling through time in an Uber time machine.

I could probably pull some scenes from The Terminator or The Matrix too, but maybe they belong on a top 10 list instead. 😛

Just like with the "best Star Wars characters" thread, I'm stuck in another massive dilemma. I've watched so many sci-fi movies that trying to pick a top 3 feels like a Sisyphus task.

3). The entire sequence where the Harvester Mothership arrives on Earth, Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).

This might shock you all, but out of all the sci-fi films, this one scene from maybe one of the dumbest movies ever makes the cut. Honestly, if there’s anything that instilled pure megalophobia in my bones, it’s those scenes of the Harvester arriving on Earth. Even though the first ID movie has plenty of iconic moments, they all get overshadowed by the Harvester in IDR. Though, granted, the plot of the first one is miles ahead of IDR.

2). The defibrillation scene, The Thing (1984).

Wow, what a scene. It's burned into my brain for life, and it was all practical effects. You can almost smell the creature through the screen because it's so real. And then the shapeshifting afterward, and that head growing legs... wow man !!!

1). The training scene, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

Before that, we see the spacecraft in the endless void, followed by the routine training, all set to that beautiful music. It might be one of the most stunning depictions of theoretical life in space ever put on film. As alienating as it is, it makes you just want to fall in love with it, to wish you could spend even one day in an environment like that. Generally speaking, any scene showing life aboard a starship fascinates me. Personally, I'd love to live like that—working for science while waking up every day to those incredible views of the cosmic emptiness. That's why, for instance, that scene from the Odyssey is my Odyssey Top 1; it perfectly captures a childhood dream of mine. To me, the Odyssey is the No. 1 Sci-Fi film ever.

1. The Terminator. That moment when Linda Hamilton yells: You´re terminated fucker!! Unbeatable.

2. Terminator II. Arnie sinking into that liquid metal. And then just THUMBS UP 👍
I mean, the movie is packed with all-time classics, but that one was... ugh. 🙏
