Who you gonna call when you make a remake that the entire world absolutely hated? Apparently, the original creators just... come back to do a third one. Yeah, the ghostbusters are back. Even after that 2016 reboot—which was honestly a total disaster on basically every level—Sony still hasn't given up on the idea of a franchise here. So, here we go, a new movie is happening. Jason Reitman (Juno) is stepping behind the camera, with the original director, Ivan Reitman, producing. Interestingly enough, word is this might be the version they actually intended to make before they pivoted to the remake in the first place... though we don't know anything else about the project yet. We don't even know if any of the OG cast will show up, though Ernie Hudson might be in it. The fact that there's already a teaser ready to go suggests they've been grinding on this for a while, or maybe it's just a bit of a rush job... who knows. Anyway, the teaser looks decent—for some reason, it’s got that old-school vibe, probably thanks to the score and the legendary Ecto 1—but whether the actual movie holds up remains to be seen...

That's just how the Hollywood machine operates these days—movies have basically become mass-produced commodities, nothing more than a calculated investment. If a concept doesn't land the first time, they just repackage it and try again.
Honestly, I wouldn't even blink if they brought back the old crew from the original cast.

It’s just depressing how much we’re starving for actual, fresh, original ideas.

By "previous film," they mean Ghostbusters 2, not this 2016 version.

The story centers on four teenagers—two guys and two girls—who take the lead this time around. It’s set up to be a direct follow-up to the original two films, though there's some chatter that we might not see any of the old guard at all, apparently because the original cast isn't exactly jumping at the chance to return.

I mean, think about it—why on earth would Ivan and Jason Reitman—who had zero, and I mean absolutely zero, connection to that 2016 reboot—ever want to make a sequel to a movie that was such a massive financial and critical disaster? It doesn't matter what the listing on IMDb says... the story is clearly picking up right where the first two originals left off, or at least sharing that same timeline...

How should I know? I'm just passing along what's listed on IMDb. I'm hardly claiming it's gospel truth.

The name is just too trashed and the reputation is so cooked at this point that there's zero point in trying anymore, even if it has nothing to do with that whole mess back in 2016.

And here we go, the shitstorm is officially brewing. Apparently, the "progressive" crowd is already losing their minds because the new Ghostbusters movies are going to feature "white men" in the lead roles again.

Not gonna happen. The new characters are going to be the actual protagonists here. We’re looking at a 50/50 gender split, at least. As for the racial makeup? Who knows yet. Honestly, the actors from the original films might not even show up, and if they do, they'll likely just be making cameos. Besides, let's not pretend everyone in the original cast was white to begin with.

The whole point of this massive shitstorm is that the "progressive" crowd loses their minds the second they think a man might actually have a lead role, let alone a white guy. I mean, didn't Sigourney have a kid in the original? That kid could totally be one of the new Ghostbusters, especially since this movie is supposed to be a direct sequel.

Look, if you ask me, I’d vote for a lineup like this: one white guy, one white girl, one Asian guy, and one Black girl. It hits that sweet spot of being diverse enough without feeling like they're shoving it down your throat, you know?

Look, if there's a white woman in the mix, it’s obviously going to be because of that whole "white feminism" thing. I find it hard to believe they’ll go with two white leads out of a group of four protagonists. If they did that, people would just scream again about how white characters are getting preferential treatment or need to be overrepresented. Personally, I'm betting on one representative from each major race. And who knows? Maybe we'll see a few old favorites pop up in a cameo here and there.
