HandBrake alternatives?

How do I "speed up" the subtitle syncing process in HandBrake? It’s taking forever... at least 3 hours. Is there any way to make this go faster? Or does it just depend on the movie? Because it takes this long no matter what I throw at it.

It really boils down to a few different things:

- Your computer's specs (mostly the CPU and RAM)
- The size of the file you're working with (like a 700MB CD vs. a 4.3GB DVD)
- The resolution and quality settings you've picked for the output
- And a few other variables, I guess.
- There isn't exactly a magic wand here; it all comes down to your hardware and how you have the software configured. 🙂

CPU is 2.6GHz
RAM is 2GB
The movie is 1.35GB (so a standard DVD)
I'm converting to HD Video, trying to get it looking sharp (that's why I'm using HD Video)
p.s.—the movie is about 2 hours long, but the conversion takes twice as long, like 4 hours... driving me nuts.

Anyone got a clue?!

So you're trying to upscale a 1.35GB AVI file into an HD Video format,
I guess I should mention that expecting high-quality HD material from a basic old AVI file is probably asking too much. 🙄
A converter is just a converter; it isn't some kind of magician.

Look, you're already killing the quality just by converting it. Like people have already told you, what's even the point of turning it into an HD Video when the original 1.3GB file isn't even HD to begin with?

As for your setup, the length of the movie, and the whole process... yeah, taking 3 or 4 hours to convert is pretty much standard stuff🙂

I just downloaded Harry Potter part 2 and it's sitting at 8.04GB... is there actually a way to downsize this thing or should I just find a different version to download?

Yeah, you could shrink it, but man, the picture quality takes a massive hit. Honestly? You're better off just grabbing a newer rip somewhere between 700MB and 1.3GB.🙂
But if you're actually trying to download stuff in HD, then we're talking about a whole different beast entirely.😁

You can download whatever format you want in HD resolution. My advice? Just grab a brrip using DivX—say, 1280 * 720. It’ll be around 1-2 GB. Besides, you don't even have the DVDrip for Harry Potter 7 Part 2 yet, let alone a brrip. Just wait a bit and grab the DVDrip; the picture quality is fine and you won't have to convert anything. I have no idea where you found that 8 GB file, because usually, the best quality is a brrip, followed by a DVDrip. Everything else is just garbage (TS, CAM...).

I get it. That was the only one being offered, so I grabbed it. But alright, lesson learned for next time.

So, I’m trying to convert this file, right? Like, say I'm going from an mp4 over to some HD Video format, but instead of getting the whole episode—we're talking maybe 40 minutes of footage—it just spits out like... 2 minutes of video. Just cuts off. 😕

To be perfectly honest, I find myself wondering what the actual point of re-encoding everything into HD Video is. I mean, if one intends to watch these files on a standard DVD player, they won't support HD Video anyway, so I suppose it leads me to question what device anyone actually plans to use if they feel the need to convert an .mp4 into an .avi file in the first place.

So, basically, I grabbed this series, and most of the episodes are in .avi, which work fine with subtitles and everything. But then the last five episodes are all .mp4, and for some reason, they just refuse to pick up any subtitles I throw at them—no matter which ones I download. I'm trying to convert them back to .avi so things work again. Only problem is, when I try to convert, it works perfectly fine except for the fact that since I'm stuck using a trial version, it cuts off after like two minutes.
