Overrated vs. underrated actors, directors, and movies...

The first ones that come to mind are:

Overrated actors:

Meryl Streep, Nicolas Cage, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, Will Ferrell... there are just too many to list!

Underrated actors:

Edward Norton (I know he’s famous, but I feel like he should be even more of a household name; in my opinion, he’s probably the best "modern" actor out there), Christoph Waltz (I honestly wonder why he doesn't get more offers?), Joaquin Phoenix, Tim Roth, Gary Oldman, James Franco...

Overrated directors:

Christopher Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan, Kevin Smith, Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson...

Underrated directors:

Billy Wilder, F. W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, Milos Forman, Hayao Miyazaki...

Overrated movies:

The Seventh Seal, Citizen Kane (it's interesting, sure, but maybe not the greatest film of all time like some people claim), Crash, The Sixth Sense, Million Dollar Baby, The Dark Knight, Casablanca, Memento, Clerks, The Hangover, Dead Poets Society...

Underrated movies:

The Out-of-Towners (1970), 25th Hour, True Romance, Better Off Dead, Requiem for a Dream, Ed Wood, The Apartment (1960)... there are so many others, really! These were just the first few that popped into my head.

Clint Eastwood isn't overrated.

I’m not quite sure what world you’re living in, but here on Earth, names like F. W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder aren't considered underrated by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, if you look at any reasonably serious ranking of the greatest films ever made, you’re almost guaranteed to find at least one masterpiece from each of those directors.

Milos Forman isn't overlooked either; though I'll admit his early American period tends to get a bit less attention than his earlier work.

I can agree with you that certain films on your "overrated" list belong there for good reason.

I have to say, I’d probably only agree with about 10 percent of the claims being made in this thread.

To be blunt, roughly 60 percent of these citations feel like a personal insult—honestly, it's exhausting—and another 30 percent are just flat-out wrong.

The whole thing is pretty much a mess, 👎

You're spot on about half of this, but I have to disagree—Clint Eastwood is definitely not overrated, and neither is Meryl Streep.
As for Nicolas Cage and Tom Cruise, people don't really value them nearly as much as they should.

Basically, the public tends to overlook certain directors on all the major lists, even if they eventually manage to squeeze their way onto one.

First off, this topic is just way too broad. And honestly, it started out more like a list, which we have plenty of already. If the OP really wants to get a discussion going like this, I guess they should try opening a new thread, but maybe this time actually explain and justify why they think someone is overrated.
