Yeah, the processor is really the crux of the matter. If you actually want to squeeze any decent performance out of this setup, you should probably be looking at an upgrade soon—maybe even just grabbing a used Core 2 Duo clocked above 3GHz or jumping straight to a Quad core.

It’s not all about the GHz... plus, my specific model is on a 65nm process, whereas most Quads (if I recall correctly, all of them) are built on 45nm. Again, clock speed isn't everything! 🙄 In my book, having more Cache memory matters way more than raw clock speeds. 🙂

I won't get us sidetracked into off-topic debates here, because this could turn into a massive rabbit hole if we aren't careful.🙂

Sure, GHz isn't everything, but if you want a GPU to actually crunch data, you need high clock speeds—and that’s still measured in GHz.🙂
The real difference between 65nm and 45nm comes down to die size, lower power draw, and faster speeds...
As for cache? It's alright. Sure, more is better, but anything over 1MB per core is plenty for me.🙂

Sure, clock speed isn't everything, but if you want a GPU to actually process data at any meaningful rate, you need those high GHz numbers. It’s just how the math works. 🙂
The jump from 65nm to 45nm is really about die size, lower power draw, and bumping up the speeds...
As for cache, it's a nice upgrade, but anything over 1MB per core is pretty much plenty for what we're doing. 🙂

I'm running a 65nm setup right now... does that mean if I want to move up to 45nm, I have to swap out my entire motherboard too? :S

Just start a new thread and we can hash it out there.🙂

Just make sure you list which motherboard you're running.🙂
Or, you know, just shoot me a DM with your board info and I'll tell you which CPU will work.
🙂

Oh, and grab CPU-Z to check your motherboard specs.🙂

I guess I'm wondering if anyone actually knows what kind of performance to expect from that card, or if anyone around the States happens to have one lying around.

Alex Harris32 said:The EVGA 4850 is a solid Card, and you’re definitely going to notice a jump over that NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB—assuming, I guess, that you actually pair it with a decent enough processor.

Is that really all I get? I honestly thought there would be more suggestions, comments, or actual replies to my question at the end of this post. Maybe I expected too much.

Haha... your Card isn't exactly breaking any records... just kidding. All things considered, if you aren't some hardcore pro gamer, it should serve you well enough for at least another two years.🙂

Honestly, what more is there to say? 🙂

The EVGA 4850 is essentially the same as any other 4850 on the market; if you take a moment to browse through some online reviews, you will see that its reputation is quite solid among enthusiasts.

If you are still feeling uncertain, you could always turn to YouTube to watch some gameplay footage and see how it actually handles modern titles.

Not sure what you were expecting here. 😁 The Card is fine, and obviously plenty of people across the US own one.

EDIT: And of course, two guys managed to jump ahead of me with their posts in a matter of seconds. 😁

That’s a pretty solid point you made there, but I guess you might want to consider how long I've actually had this thing. My two-year warranty expired about a year ago, so I'm already heading into my third year of ownership, which makes your suggestion of adding another two years feel maybe a little bit optimistic.

Alex Harris32 said:Well, I guess there isn't much else a guy can say about it. 🙂

It’s an EVGA 4850, just like any other 4850 out there; I guess if you actually took a second to read some reviews online, you’d see that everyone seems to be praising it.

I guess you could always just fall back on YouTube and see how games actually perform on there.

EVGA 4850

Everything I said still holds up, but I guess you might want to take a closer look at that card's actual specs.

I probably shouldn't even bother asking what you guys think about this Card, since looking at the raw specs, an EVGA 4850 is clearly a step down from what I've got running. Not even counting things like trilinear filtering or shadow effects, let alone the basic bus speed, memory, or clock speeds—it just doesn't seem to stack up.

And of course, two guys managed to crowd right in front of me with their posts within a few seconds. 😁

Why are you so salty with them, Thomas Hernandez21? It doesn't really matter what your deal is; just tell me what I actually need to know.

omg

looks like there's a massive debate going on here between the 4890 and the 5770

didn't realize you could even find a 4890 anymore, but if it's down to those two, definitely go with the 4890

it's way better

Hey there.
So, my old Gigabyte HD 3870 finally decided to call it quits. It started throwing weird colors all over the screen before just dying on me completely. I’ve got about $333 to spend on a replacement, and I’m currently running at 1680x1050. Any suggestions on what I should grab?

Current setup:
Intel Core 2 Duo
Dell Inspiron 4GB RAM
2 GB RAM
EVGA 450W

The HD 4850 or the HD 4830 are still solid picks, especially since the HD 5770 is still sitting well over a hundred bucks...

Look, man, not everyone has an account at Newegg.😁

The HD4850 or HD4830 are still solid picks. Especially since the next step up, the HD5770, is still way too expensive...

The 5770 isn't worth the asking price.

A 4830, or better yet an 4850, would fit your build perfectly and definitely outperform that 3870.

That 5200 processor is totally fine. Pair it with any 48xx card and you can keep gaming for a good few more years.

Don't listen to them too much... just grab whatever looks better to you. 😁 😁

Edit: check out this site to compare FPS against price http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=49 , it was pretty helpful for me when I was deciding 🙂

Jason Lopez2, it seems like you don't really know what you're talking about.
People tend to get overly excited about "bad" products too often. I guess it's better to just let us decide which GPU is worth buying.

Yeah, the 4850 will be an excellent choice for future gaming at that resolution; you should be able to run everything without any issues.👍
