I don't see the point of this whole debate. Who actually cares about the budget for $267? Whether Fermi is any good or not is irrelevant... you've got the 4850 and the 250 GTS right here, which are basically neck and neck anyway. That's the bottom line.

So, here is the situation I find myself in
The graphics card I am currently running is an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
As for my processor, I have an Intel Celeron CPU 2.53
Regarding my power supply... well, I actually have no idea :S
Card type: AGP
Current resolution: 1024x768
I am prepared to set aside some cash😁 around $217 maybe even a bit more
And what I am really looking for is something with at least 512MB
I wouldn't mind checking out shops around the Chicago area, or I could even head over to New York if the price stays under $300$167
And I must emphasize one thing: I REALLY WANT a card with a fan, because there is just no way I am settling for passive cooling

I’ve been sitting here scrolling through everything for a bit, but honestly, driving all the way out to a major hub like Chicago just feels like such a massive trek, doesn't it? Navigating a sprawling metropolis like that can be quite overwhelming when you aren't used to the chaos of a big city compared to somewhere more laid-back like Des Moines😢 but I will certainly give it some thought, so thank you! Does anyone else happen to have a recommendation for a decent shop in the vicinity of Des Moines... and by any chance, does anyone know what their shipping fees typically look like???

Ideally looking at shops near Columbus or maybe driving over to Chicago if it stays under $300$167
And I should mention—I definitely want a card with a fan. I'm not interested in passive cooling.

Don't bother buying anything. That processor is a disaster.

Signed by Thomas Hernandez21.
I guess you're going to need a completely new PC.

He needs a whole new rig.

Wait, why would he need a whole new PC if he's just looking for a GPU??

Let him grab something from the $100... AGP or PCI era...
But is he actually going to enjoy playing anything? Probably not.

Unless... maybe he just wants to play GTA Vice City, NFS Underground, or CoD2?

But I doubt he'll actually bother playing anything serious. Maybe.

Or maybe he will: GTA Vice City, NFS 2 through 5, CoD2, stuff like that...

That processor probably won't handle any high-end card. For him, this FX5500 is plenty. Those games you mentioned should run fine even now.

Honestly, there’s no point going any higher than this because of the processor limitations; I mean, I once ran the exact same CPU paired with an 8600GT myself. 😁

I'm not sure what happened; I checked it on my end and it seemed fine🤷

Bryan Evans77 made his point regardless👍

I honestly think he’s just going to end up with another massive bottleneck, much like what he’s dealing with right now. Why wouldn't he just grab an HD 4650 512MB? $183 It really is, and it definitely outperforms the Radeon HD 3450. In my opinion, the processor should be able to handle it reasonably well, though you're still looking at 🤣

Hey everyone! I'm putting together a new build (budgeting about $900 without a monitor), so I wanted to run my plans by you all :P Since I live right near a Best Buy 😁
, I'll probably just grab everything there.
So, here is what I'm looking at:

ASRock 770 Extreme3 motherboard, AMD 770/SB710, DDR3, audio, SATA, RAID, G-LAN, PCI-E, eSATA, ATX, socket AM3, USB 3.0
AMD Athlon II x4 640 box processor, socket AM3, 3.0GHz, 2MB cache
PC-12800 memory, 4 GB, CORSAIR CMX4GX3M2A1600C9, DDR3 1600 MHz, 2x2 GB kit
640.0 GB hard drive, WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar Black, SATA, 32 MB cache, 7200rpm, desktop

Now, my biggest headache is deciding on a graphics card and power supply...
I was thinking about this GPU but am I really making the best choice? By the way, what's the absolute maximum I should spend on the video card? $567 Thanks in advance! 🙂

You could go with a Corsair CX400 or even a VX450—though looking at the prices over at Best Buy, they're pretty steep. Or maybe just grab something decent rated for 500W...

grafa:

Hmm... maybe try finding a cheaper retailer? For that kind of money, you're looking at an $80 range plus a GTX 275... honestly, I wouldn't touch a 4870 for that price.

The GeForce GTX 460 is already looking like a pretty solid contender here. You're getting performance on par with the 5830, but it seems to have much better overclocking headroom.

Hmm, I don't see much of an offer on those newer cards over at Linksys, but maybe check out ADM instead? (Chicago) They'll handle the assembly for free, test everything, and ship it right to you—plus their prices seem a bit lower than what Linksys is charging. Here’s something similar:

1 x Gigabyte MA770TA-UD3, AMD 770+SB710, S. AM3, 6xSATA RAID, 2xSATA
2 x DDR3 2048Mb ( 2Gb ) Kingmax, 1600MHz, CL9, FLGE85F-B8KL9
1 x AMD Athlon II x4 635, socket AM3, BOX , 2Mb cache, 95W
1 x HDD WD 640Gb, WD6400AAKS, SATA II, Buffer 16Mb, 3Gb/s, 7.200 rpm
1 x Napajanje SEASONIC 520W, SS-520GB, S12 II, aktivni PFC
1 x Gigabyte GTX 465 1Gb GDDR5 256bit, DVI+VGA+HDMI, PCI-X 2.0

$1779

If you need to cut costs a little, you could probably save some money by switching to this motherboard:

That would be my suggestion 😉

Not at all! Actually, I just put together a build on Micro Center and it turned out even $303 cheaper than the price over at Best Buy. Plus, they offer shipping, so I think I'll just order from them. As for the specs, the 😉 looks perfect to me (we actually picked the exact same processor!). Regarding the GPU, I was originally dreaming of getting a 5830, but honestly, a GTX 465 costs $67 more. Isn't it funny how much I save just by switching from Best Buy to Micro Center? ^^ I’m still going to play around with the options a bit, but I'll mostly stick to your
suggestions.
