So, I'm looking to pick up a GPU for gaming—trying to keep up with all these new releases—so if you guys have any suggestions...

Budget is around $6,000...

Grab yourself a NVIDIA GTX 580, give it a little overclock, and boom—you basically have an HD 5870 on your hands. Since you didn't mention what kind of power supply you're running, if it’s just some cheap junk that came bundled with your case, go ahead and pick up an EVGA 450 W instead.

An EVGA 400 W would work too, but personally, I’d rather have that extra breathing room. 🙂

Come on, if you've got the $2000, there's no point in being cheap. Just grab two NVIDIA GTX 580s, run them in CrossFire, and maybe you'll actually hit 😁

What about a GTX 480?

First off, you gotta answer these questions for me

Are you looking for an AGP or a PCI-E card?
What’s your current or upcoming setup look like, and what kind of power supply are you running?
What resolution are you playing at?
How much cash are you planning to drop on this?
Which stores are you checking out?
If you’ve got any other specific requirements, just lay them out for me.

The 480 is maybe slightly better than a 5870 if you’re just looking at a single card, but it costs way more... though I guess you could just grab two 5870s instead.

What’s the current—or future—setup looking like, and what kind of power supply are we talking about?

How much cash are you actually willing to drop?
Which stores are you looking at?
If there's anything else specific you need, just let us know.

PCI-E
4GB RAM
Intel Core i3 at 2.93GHz
ATI Radeon HD 5450 🙂
$2000Budget is... well, I'll decide when I see it...
Anywhere, I guess.

So, what I'm hearing is—if I run them in Crossfire, I might actually beat an HD5970???

What about the power supply?

The PSU though xD... I'm just gonna grab a new one—probably something around 600W, I guess.

Why on earth would you need 600W? A Corsair 450W can handle a single 5870 or even an overclocked 5850—which is basically the same thing at this point. If you're planning on running a serious CrossFire setup with dual 5870s, though, you'll definitely want to grab a Corsair 520W

Come on, guys, seriously, can't you see what's happening here?

You're playing a dangerous game with a permanent ban if you aren't careful, just so you know...

So, I’ve got a quick question—why is nobody even offering an HD 5970 2GB? I’ve actually got plenty of cash set aside for one... since the 5870 is honestly way too weak for what I need.

Dude, you’re playing with fire if you want to avoid a permanent ban. Just a heads up.

Look, I know he's full of it too, but honestly, his posts are hilarious because he always ends up exposing himself. 🤣

I was just messing around putting together a random PC build up to $2000 and realized that for the amount of cash he’s dropping on a single GPU, you could actually build a seriously killer gaming rig (minus the monitor, obviously). You should probably give it some thought,
. Here’s how it shook out:
Cooler Master 332 + ASRock 870 + X4 635 + WD Blue 640 GB + XFX 5850 Black Edition + 2x2 GB Corsair 1333 + Corsair 450W + LG GH 22NS = $5,952

At least if you ask me, this blows what he’s running right now out of the water. He can always grab a high-end cooler later, overclock the CPU, and he'll have a beast of a machine.

What are your thoughts on the Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT?

It’s decent, but honestly pretty dated... there are probably better deals out there. I'd suggest grabbing an Nvidia GTS 250 if you're buying 🙂

A buddy of mine just fried his ATI Radeon HD 3870 and he’s absolutely devastated 😁, so he asked me to hunt down some kind of replacement for around $167. He’s on a tight budget—asked if I could find something under $350—but honestly, I'll probably end up covering the difference myself... I'm not exactly a tech genius, so if you guys could point me toward the best possible substitute in that price range

It’s running on a PCI Express setup, dual-core Phenom processor, and a Gigabyte AM2+ socket motherboard (GA-M52L-S3P). Power supply is some cheap off-brand 550W unit (honestly, what a joke), and he’s playing at 1920*1080 resolution. It doesn't need to max everything out on high settings, and an AMD card would be nice

thanks 🙂

If you can grab this one, go for it:

But if that’s pushing it, maybe try this instead:

The first one is roughly in the same ballpark as an ATI Radeon HD 3870, whereas the second one is a bit weaker, I guess... 😛

I'm staring at all these listings and feeling a little lost, so if you guys could point me toward the best possible substitute for his old card in that price range

It's on a PCI Express slot, the CPU is some dual-core Phenom, he's running a Gigabyte AM2+ socket motherboard (the GA-M52L-S3P), and the power supply is a Neo MS 550W (honestly, what a joke...), he plays at 1920*1080 resolution (doesn't need everything cranked to high), and an AMD card would be really nice

thanks 🙂

Maybe try hunting down a used HD4850... they usually go for about $167. Alternatively, you might find an ATI Radeon HD 4830 for $133, a GTS 512 8800 for around 400-$167, or even an 8800 GT 512 for $133.
