It’s nothing out of the ordinary, I guess 🤷

Nothing surprising here. The official MSRP for the Founders Edition is $399—add some sales tax and you're right there. Given the shortages, partner brands will probably stay at similar (or even higher) price points than the Founders for a while.

So, thumbs up for Intel. They've got a solid reference design with the GTX 1060 and a price tag that should actually keep those partner brands in check.

The RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 were nothing more than paper launches. While you could argue that the lack of sufficient DDR5X supply justifies the situation for the RTX 3080, there is absolutely no excuse for the RTX 3070. It’s been weeks since the launch and we are still left with
nothing.

It was obvious from the jump that Nvidia would pull a paper launch in early June, while Intel would stick to their plan for a full rollout by the end of the month...

Intel actually sticks to the roadmap they laid out at the start of the year, whereas Nvidia originally teased a late summer arrival. Honestly, this whole paper launch feels like a desperate attempt at damage control, and it’s clearly backfiring since the people who actually have the cash to buy are pissed because everything is out of stock. 😬

Was there some truth to the rumors that NVIDIA might fall behind Intel due to poor yields? It seems they rushed things out—especially since massive production for DDR5X isn't even kicking off until this summer. Being first to market might have been a strategic move for damage control, but it certainly helped fuel the hype, particularly with Intel preparing to roll out those budget-friendly options. Since NVIDIA doesn't have much competition in certain segments, they’ve taken the liberty of hiking up prices to meet demand, which has clearly rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I heard someone in New York was seeing an RTX 3070 priced at over $800!

Jay's take

You could probably find something similar for about the same price over at Verizon.

You had your chance to snag this card for $1000. It’s built like a tank, too. Now you missed out. 😛

Built like a tank? Yeah, well, it consumes power like one too. I'd rather just grab a GTX 1060 in a few weeks for way less cash.

I honestly think this could be a smarter buy than a custom GTX 1060 right now. My only concern is that by tomorrow, the link will probably just say "out of stock."

I noticed some shops have started stocking the ASUS H110M-R at a pretty decent price point. CLICK It’s sitting around $65 or so, supports up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, has 1x PCIe 3.0, 2x PCIe 2.0, 4x SATA 3, one DVI/HDMI/VGA combo, 4x USB 2.0, and 2x USB 3.0. Honestly, it looks like a solid little budget option for $133... Has anyone actually gotten their hands on this board yet? Think it'll play nice with an Intel i5 6400/6402 or maybe a 6500?

It seems fine to me—I mean, you're working with an Asus board here, and those processors you listed aren't exactly power hogs. Since you aren't planning on overclocking, I don't think you'll run into any real issues at all.

How would anyone even have this board already? It’s like there are 10,000 people out there buying stuff every single second. 🤣

It seems pretty much identical to the H81M-R, just with DDR4 and a few extra connectors. Honestly, I don't see it on Asus's official list at all. I suspect it might actually be the H110M-A.

It’s not some brand-new motherboard release, honestly; it just landed on the shelves of those "big box" retailers a few days ago.

How much cash should I be setting aside these days to put together a true "best buy" build? I'm talking about that sweet spot where you get the absolute most bang for your buck. I tried throwing some random parts together the other day just for fun, and somehow ended up spending over $2000 without even picking out anything special.

Come on, drop the link to your specs... let's see what you're working with.

Look, a "best buy" isn't some universal label; it really depends on your specific budget and what you actually need to do. For instance, you could call a Celeron a "best buy" if you're looking to spend just $250-$100, but then again, an i7 5820k at over $500 could be a total steal depending on your setup.

My initial thought was that this i5 from $467 was a total steal, but now that I've sat with it for a minute, I might be totally off base. Anyway, just ignore me...

On another note. If someone is working in photography and needs a case that can house ten high-capacity drives, they’re going to need all ten disks plus a setup that actually supports them. What would you guys suggest? I was thinking about saving some cash by skipping a motherboard with ten SATA ports and just grabbing a cheap PCIe SATA controller instead, but I can't seem to find one anywhere online.... I also checked out the Black Widow case, but there's no clear info on how many drive bays it actually has. I'm assuming a photographer would want a massive tower to fit all those drives, especially if they want something that grows with them and features enough padding to keep the noise down. For the storage itself, I was thinking about suggesting these 5TB WD Blue drives; I saw them at Best Buy for a pretty decent price.
