It’s pretty much common knowledge that
Mambo Kurt is probably the funniest German guy on the planet, but man, he always catches us off guard with how much inspiration he pulls out of nowhere when he does those wild covers of pop, punk, metal, and alt-rock classics. Over a fifteen-year career, he’s dropped seven albums full of hits we all know, but with these crazy arrangements. They work so well you honestly start wondering if
Metallica, Sex Pistols, Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, AC/DC or even
Iron Maiden actually grew up listening to samba, because these Brazilian rhythms fit their songs way too perfectly.
One cool story is how he kicked things off at the massive heavy metal festival in
Woodstock. Apparently, the festival boss wasn't a huge fan of his act at first. Even though he eventually gave in and let him play, he shoved him into a tiny tent—totally disproportionate to Mambo’s energy—at the absolute worst time. Still, Mambo crushed it and packed that tent with a wild crowd. Since then, he’s been a staple at the festival, playing either in a massive tent during peak hours (check the link below) or outdoors during the day in front of tens of thousands of people. Honestly, not many people have the guts to go out solo in front of a crowd that big.
Weather permitting—and it looks like it'll be fine—we’re finally going to see Mambo Kurt under the open sky for the first time in Washington, D.C., in the beautiful atrium of the Theater District.
Pre-sale tickets for $15 can be picked up at Hard Rock Cafe, Vintage Store, and Dancing Bear. They’ll be $20 at the door. Doors open at 8 PM, and the show starts at 9 PM.
