Best pop punk bands of all time?

Since so many people pigeonhole Green Day as just another pop-punk band—and honestly, I can't really argue with that, especially since they have one or two albums that fit that mold perfectly—I’m definitely putting my vote on them... even if they’ve drifted through pretty much every sub-genre under the sun, from rock to melodic stuff to DIY vibes, you name it. In a nutshell, Green Day rules. 😉

As for everyone else mentioned here, I actually have Buzzcocks in my playlist, though I definitely have more of those bands that people tend to label as just plain old punk-rock.

I honestly can't believe nobody has even brought up Blink-182 yet, whether they were talking them up or tearing them down. To me, they’re easily the biggest and most iconic pop-punk band out there, especially since they've stayed true to that specific sound without ever really chasing trends or changing their core identity...

I’ve been listening to a lot of NOFX lately, and honestly, they're hitting me so hard right now that I'm having a bit of an existential crisis regarding where to actually place them—like, should we even be calling them pop? It's one of those things where you start questioning everything once you really dive into the melodies versus the raw energy, and I just can't quite wrap my head around the classification.
I’ve got mixed feelings about The Offspring, honestly. They aren't exactly my go-to, and if I'm being totally blunt, I find them a bit too strung out, though I don't really go out of my way to avoid them—it's more like they just pop up when they're on shuffle and I'll listen to a track or two here and there. To me, they always felt like they had this slightly more aggressive edge to their punk sound compared to some of the other stuff I gravitate toward.

Indie rock is such a massive umbrella term. It covers pretty much everything under the sun.😵
But I’ve always just described them as playing this really imaginative kind of pop punk.

These categories are driving me insane. Pop punk, punk rock, indie pop punk rock... honestly, it feels like being back in high school trying to memorize how many different types of vertebrae there are. Is there some kind of textbook out there 😢 so maybe I can actually learn something?

NOFX just sounds like they're screaming at me too much; I'm really not sure if they even deserve to be classified as "pop."

Green Day has evolved, sure, but they've always stayed within that pop-punk vein. To my mind, they, Buzzcocks, Descendents, and the like are pop-punk—whereas I don't even count Lagwagon, Blink-182, or those other idiots as actual punk.

Nah... that’s what I was getting at regarding Strung Out. Personally, The Offspring just reminds me too much of Nirvana, and I really can't stand them, even if Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are totally fine!

Speaking of Green Day.... look at the Insomniac album from '95, or maybe 1039/Smooth from '91, or Kerplunk back in '92... there is absolutely no way you can call that pop-punk!!! Sure, Dookie has a few songs that fit, and then you've got Nimrod, which is all over the place! Warning—which I honestly think is their most "pop-punk" sounding effort—has some tracks that lean into that pop vibe, but... Green Day is just Green Day, regardless of what genre they're playing. They've been at it for 16 or 17 years now... yeah, sure, there have been a few disagreements here and there, but since they have the support of their friends and actual understanding within the band... they're still right where they belong. I'm looking forward to the new album this fall... kind of like how Billie said in one of those music videos, "...because there is no 'I' in band!" Honestly, if you actually love them and listen to their music, you couldn't care less whether people call them sellouts or whatever else.

True enough, I completely overlooked the Descendents!
They really are the gold standard. When you think of the big names, Blink-182 and Green Day definitely stand out from the crowd.
I’m also thinking of The Mr. T Experience and Swingin' Utters, though they lean a bit more toward that ska-punk sound.
As for those genre divisions, I find them just as irritating as you do.
I actually started this thread because Six Pack is scheduled to play some pop punk at KEXP in about a month, and I wanted to see what everyone else's favorites were.

That’s exactly where the issue lies. I’m looking to break away from the standard formula; honestly, most of those California punk bands start sounding identical to me after a while, which is why I’m hunting for some fresh perspectives.
Something with an island vibe—maybe something out of the UK.
Think Ash or early Supergrass, maybe some newer Graham Coxon, or a certain track by the Subways. What else is out there?

If you're looking to avoid California, my go-to list would include Buzzcocks, maybe Mega City Four, Snuff, and Dinosaur Jr. (stuff like "Little Fury Things," "Show Me The Way," "On The Way," etc.). Maybe Moving Targets, and definitely Jawbreaker and Pegboy. I'd throw in Pixies ("Head On"!), a certain NoMeansNo hit (from "Worldhood of the World," obviously), "Sleep" by Big Black, some of the more commercial New Bomb Turks ("Scared Straight"), and the Dwarves from their pop-punk era ("Thank Heaven for Little Girls" through "... Are Young and Good Looking"). Then there's "I'm Gonna Play Hockey" by Hanson Brothers, Overflow, Misfits, and Supernova (that "Ages 3 and up" album is basically a goldmine of mindless hits for punk kids). Also Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers ("Alternative Ulster" and "Suspect Deviant," naturally), Exploding Hearts, and man, The Real Kids are even better... Psihomodo Pop's "Kad Places," Screeching Weasel (screaming "Boogadaboogadaboogad" as loud as possible, especially "Supermarket Fantasy"), and The Clash—as subtle as possible (current favorite is "The Last Gang in Town"). Leatherface ("Mush" is easily their best), Hüsker Dü is a given, and maybe Rich Kids on LSD if you're into metal and idiots. Peter & The Test Tuba Babies during their most melodic phase ("Supermodels"), Carter USM ("Let's Get Tattoos," yes, yes, yes!), and Naked Raygun is mandatory ("I Remember," "I Don't Know," "Treason"—the very essence of pop meets punk and vice versa), Eater, Saints, X from Australia, and American X (which is technically California, but not *that* California)... and I could go on forever. 😁

Pop-punk is the superior punk genre... 😍

Man, we totally overlooked the queers... and the vandals too...
