Adam Mendoza8 said:Nomad is easily one of the best things to ever happen to American music journalism. 1998 was such a peak year—you had Nomad, Massive Attack, Black Box Recorder, Ash, Air, and Fatboy Slim all dominating the scene. I’m actually glad you got worked up about it! 👋
Man, you talk about Nomad like you were actually an editor there—aside from your posts on this forum, of course. 😬

Heh, alright, maybe we aren't *that* great after all.🙄
Nomad, for me, just kind of stands as a symbol of that whole era—super subjective, I know—because it brings back memories of crashing in those little valleys out in the California hills, late-night swims with people whose names I can't even remember, Mezzanine, England Made Me, Moon Safari... (Ugh, okay, enough nostalgia and pathetic reminiscing).
Hmm, now that I think about it, I’m not even that off-topic. Let's pose a quick poll question (strictly for fun): "Is Nomad overrated?"

Nomad is trash. They used to have decent design, though...

I have to say... I really can't get behind that opinion. Nomad actually had some fantastic journalists—writers who produced truly great pieces. You know, the kind that were both hilarious and brutally honest... To this day, I still think Tarabarić’s showdown with Hamid was one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever read. And Taylor Swift wrote such incredible reviews, plus, I owe my discovery of Yo La Tengo to Lazic...
And please, don't start bringing up Chikara, young Dragash, or Heroin... because back in "their heyday," I was barely ten years old—my musical peak was just listening to a Beatles compilation on cassette tape. So, let's not fight about it... 😁

The way those two wrote didn't change the fact that the Nomad crowd was posting arrogant, stupid nonsense without actually knowing what they were talking about (not everyone, obviously). I didn't like them; I thought they were trash. Some people liked them. Both me and a few others were right. Zedno Uho wrote much better and more intense stuff about music at the same time. If it hadn't ended so soon... but I have no reason to be angry. 🙂

True. And the Mucnjak family were legends too. I can't quite wrap my head around it right now, but those frustrated Nomad journalists actually made things better... 😁 Lunatic is basically just a story about some fertilizer singer and how he trashed Ivan Ramljak's mom because of a review in Nomad 🙂

David Sullivan4 said:The law is basically telling me about some fertilizer salesman and how much he hates Ivan Ramljak because of that review in Nomad 🙂
Honestly, this was one of those moments where I felt genuinely awkward 🙂

Heroin was much more substantial, far more informative, and you actually saw journalists focusing on the music instead of their own ego trips, which seemed to be the case over at Nomad—though even that felt a bit overrated to me...
Regarding the bands, I’d agree that The White Stripes and The Strokes are overhyped... It feels like that tired "retro is cool" narrative that critics love to push through their reviews, rather than an actual, objective assessment of a band's quality...

The Ramones—any given track of theirs, really. 🙂
What exactly is going on with The Ramones? I mean, come on—it’s supposed to be one-two-three-four and you hit it! Where did the energy go?
*It's Alive* remains one of my absolute favorite live albums—it isn’t overrated by any stretch of the imagination!
The Ramones.
Ramones and Rocket to Russia
Let’s talk about albums. Honestly? They are incredibly overrated.
As far as I can tell, Acid Eaters isn't exactly anyone's favorite, and they certainly aren't held in high regard by most people. However, that’s beside the point—we aren't here to discuss albums like that.
The Ramones don't belong in the same conversation as this. 🙂

Man, CRACK was legendary. He was an amazing musician from, I think, some small town in the South or something. I believe a few of them are writing for Hombre now -> http://www.hombrezone.com/
And yeah, stop hating on the Ramones. They’re basically the greatest rock and roll cartoon ever made.

Gary Morgan98 said:real, objective quality of a band...
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this forever. What does that even mean? What is "objective quality" when it comes to a band? By that logic, my washing machine is objectively better than my neighbor's because:
1. it gets the clothes cleaner and the colors actually stay bright
2. it doesn't eat through my electric bill as fast
Is that how it works with bands too? Is it just some nonsense?

Nomad is trash.
Fair point, but let’s be real: before MP3s were everywhere and Napster was even a thing, he actually helped people discover bands they otherwise would have never heard. Back then, internet access wasn't a given and connections were terrible.
Especially for anyone living outside major hubs like NYC who didn't have local college radio on tap—for many, Nomad was the only way they ever saw names like Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, or Neutral Milk Hotel.

What exactly did they kick you out of the Big Brother house for? Even Heidegger wouldn't be able to make sense of that one...🙄
