To is a band I knew absolutely nothing about
before the show, I’d only managed to catch a song or two online
I'll believe in anything
which makes me pretty easy to convince😁
And honestly, the concert was great—really excellent, actually. The band feels very organic and laid-back; you can just sense this deep sense of unity in how they play together
None of the four of them really play "traditionally," if you know what I mean—they’re all constantly experimenting with their instruments. But they have this specific vibe where it doesn't come off as just noodling around; instead, it feels totally original, inspired, and intentional
At times, I found myself thinking of Modest Mouse, especially during the vocals (whenever the guy on the synth takes the mic), and because of those structured, complex songs that don't rely on a catchy chorus, but rather on a specific phrase, an atmospheric snippet, or a sudden guitar attack 😁
Though, I suppose they're a bit louder than MM, even if they aren't quite full-on noise
In any case, it was such a pleasant surprise to encounter such an electric, melodic, yet loud band after that endless stretch of neo-folk junk that—I guess—we have Gram Parsons 🙏 to thank for. It feels like the era of that stuff is finally winding down. I’m looking forward to seeing if Giant Sand 😍 can really hit home with this bearded group playing in their flannel shirts
The acoustics in the venue were a little hollow and strange🤷 It wasn't ideal, really, since the sound profile shifts drastically if you move just a few feet to the left or right🤷
The heat and humidity were a bit much, too; it's a shame they didn't play outdoors. As the days keep getting warmer, I feel like someone really needs to do something about the climate control in these places
