Just a little bit of everything. Enough to satisfy the craving, but not enough to go overboard... you know? Just keeping it moderate.
Other people can just pig out on sweets whenever they want—like sitting in front of the TV and demolishing a whole box of Entenmann's.

Yeah, obviously, I don't touch the sugary stuff because of the diabetes, plus I'm trying not to pack on the pounds.

It doesn't mean I turn down a slice of cake every single time someone offers it, it just means I have to balance it all out with my insulin later.

Not to mention those hypoglycemic crashes where I have to scramble for some glucose... which, of course, usually involves more sugar... ugh. 😁

I feel like people who don't deal with health issues just guzzle down these sweetened sodas—carbonated or whatever—and they don't even realize how much junk they're actually shoving in.

Even a basic fruit juice with no added sugar has so much natural sugar in it that I still have to correct it with insulin.

I'm 43, I don't hit the gym, I don't run, I don't even bother with fitness classes—but I'm at a healthy weight, I feel great, and I sleep like a baby...

it's just genetics, pure luck of the draw...

So how do you explain me being in pretty good shape, despite having diabetes and eating all that "superfood" stuff you're obsessed with?

The real secret is just not overdoing it by eating the exact same thing every single day—doesn't matter if it's labeled "healthy" or some low-cal miracle food, it still adds up...

I mean, honestly, Billie doesn't even eat that much, so that's probably not the solution to her specific issues...

I'm 43, I don't hit the gym, I don't run, and I definitely don't do CrossFit, but I'm at a healthy weight, feel great, and sleep like a baby.

Plus, I've got enough stress to power a small city! 🙂

So yeah, life isn't always under our 'control.' 😉

My husband always says good sex is the best medicine for everything.
Maybe he's onto something?

It’s just because you actually pay attention to what's happening with your body—you're incredibly smart, you know your stuff, and you put so much work into staying healthy. Plus, you've got this insane level of discipline... which is honestly something I've admired about you since the first time we spent a few days together traveling abroad in 😉 >>

Genetics can't be the only factor here. It comes down to maintaining a steady, balanced lifestyle and diet. You have to do it consistently throughout your life—not just when the extra weight hits or health issues start cropping up.

jadesailor14, I think your husband has a point.😬>

😍 thanks, thanks

meanwhile, I'm over here feeling major guilt about eating bacon

honestly, when you're stuck in a situation like mine, you don't really have much of a choice—smart or not, you just deal 😬

First off, totally agree. But honestly, genetics still play a pretty big role too.
Secondly, I hear you. Though I think the emphasis should be on finding what's "good" for you. If exercise helps de-stress and keeps you feeling happy, then you can definitely enjoy a treat now and then since you've earned those calories!

But what about those pork rinds? You know, the perfectly golden, crispy ones that just shatter like chips when you bite them? Oh man, so good!

rustymoose54 said:let's be real, you don't actually have many options once you're stuck in a spot like mine—whether you want them or not😬

What do you mean you don't have options? You could always just go, "Oh my god, this is terrible, I guess I'll just be sick for the rest of my life, everyone needs to take care of me, oops, I can't exactly go to college because I have diabetes," and just wallow in being sick while expecting the world to cater to you...
don't sell yourself short here—it takes a massive amount of guts to actually face your "inner demons" and try to live a normal life!

polly said:Those little savory snack bites? You mean the ones that are perfectly golden-brown, super tight, and just shatter like potato chips when you bite them?

I gotta admit, those kinds of snacks are basically off-limits for me—total taboo territory... 😬

even if the ones you're describing don't actually seem *that* greasy. But whatever...

Rachel Brooks63, it's true that living with chronic stuff often ends up shaping who you are—there's an entire field of clinical psychology dedicated to how that works. Honestly, though? I think my own personality was shaped way more by my time serving in the military... and man, so many people went through that same grind at the same time.

Anyway, I know a ton of "colleagues"—young folks dealing with diabetes—and they're honestly totally fine, in every sense of the word. Maybe having extra glucose makes our brains run faster or something? 😬 Just kidding, it’s probably the exact opposite...

The one thing where we really don't have much of a choice is what people call "discipline." It takes a massive amount of effort just to stay healthy, whereas it takes almost zero effort to let everything go to hell. So, we just walk that fine line and hope things stay mostly okay...

rustymoose54 said:I gotta be honest, pork rinds are just a total hard pass for me... 😬

Wait, were they actually hot—like, freshly fried?

Please don't even go there... 🤮 🤮 🤮

Seriously, no amount of whiskey could ever replicate the stomach flip I got from a bowl of steaming hot pork rinds and bread—and yeah, that was like 15 or 20 years ago, but man, the memory still sticks!

Honestly, you’re one of those people who manages to find fault even with a perfectly warm apple pie and a fresh loaf of bread. 🙄 😁 😉

Rachel Brooks63 said:Have you ever eaten them while they're still piping hot—just straight off the grill?

Oh, please... 🤮 🤮 🤮

I’m telling you, no amount of whiskey or cheap bourbon could ever induce the kind of stomach rebellion I experienced after devouring a plate of scorching hot pork cracklings with some crusty bread (and yes, this was maybe 15 or 20 years ago, but the memory remains vivid!)

It’s exactly like when you can’t stop snacking on warm, buttery pecans or walnuts... you just keep going because they're absolutely divine, and then suddenly—bam!—five minutes later, you’re feeling absolutely terrible.

nah, I am definitely not one of those people. I live for warm apple pie and fresh sourdough straight out of the oven—seriously, nothing's ever been too much for me there...

but those corn dogs though... (childhood trauma)

I’m not a fan of pork rinds (under any circumstances), but I can't stand poppy seed or walnut rolls either. I’ve never quite understood why everyone goes crazy for them. 😕

But I absolutely love strudels and various fruit pastries, whether they're served hot or cold. 😍

I’d sign my name to that right now if I could, haha😁
