Seriously though—can we please stop talking about those sports where players are strapped into armor like they're headed straight into the Middle Ages?

Look, even in rugby, some guys wear those rubberheadgear things. If you're looking for pure, full-speed contact without any protection, then go play Australian Rules Football—just leave the guys in pads alone so they can actually enjoy their game. Even if it isn't all about the big hits, at least there's some damn actual tactics involved.

Honestly, rugby, American football, and Australian Rules Football are all pretty brutal... I guess anyone who’s played all three could probably back me up on that.

Look, I know I’m acting like an even bigger kid than you here, but you guys and your hot takes are just too much. We're talking about two completely different sports with totally different contact levels. It’s like trying to compare handball to water polo just because they both involve a round ball. If there was actually a need for pads in rugby, do you honestly think they wouldn't be wearing them?

Look, I’ve been in the trenches for all three myself—which is exactly why I’m saying this—and Australian Rules Football is just a different beast when it comes to contact. It’s on another level. But if you're forcing me to pick between the other two? I’d go with American football. Even with the pads, those hits are just purer and hit way harder.

I really hope this thread stays active. What’s the current state of play in American football?

So, after a successful first season of the CFL—with the local sports team taking the title—we're looking at an expansion to five clubs next year. The New England Patriots are joining the fray, though they also compete in the second tier of the Austrian league. We should see the new season kick off this fall.

Meanwhile, the American flag football league is heading into its third season with seven teams on the roster. They've even added the Vienna Silverhawks this year, so I expect things to stay competitive and interesting.

I’d love to get out there and play some games here and there, just for the fun of it, but I don't really have many fans of American football in my own circle...

If you're just looking for some recreation, I'd suggest flag football. If you want to go full 'tackle' mode, you're looking at a much bigger commitment and a lot more time on the field (among other things 🙂 ).

That’s exactly what I was thinking too. Honestly, I’d probably only do it once in a while just for kicks. I saw on a Cake or Die link that flag football isn't super contact-heavy, so if I can round up a crew, maybe we'll give it a shot. Though, knowing my friends, by the time I finish explaining the rules, I’ll probably lose interest and we’ll just end up playing some casual rugby😁 instead, as long as the ball isn't shaped like an egg😁

So, I'm 14 and living out here in Indianapolis... I'd love to find a place where I can actually train properly. When we play American football, I tend to throw the ball really hard and straight—it flies perfectly—but my teammates usually can't catch it because they just don't have the technique yet. It's kind of frustrating, honestly... If anyone knows of any good training programs or clubs around Indy, please let me know 😉

So, I'm 14 years old—and I've been wanting to get into American football for a few years now 😁 . I just recently found out that there are actually football clubs here in Washington, D.C., too. Honestly, I'd love to join a team and maybe train with the Washington Thunder. I want to really put in the work—learning the game and everything else. I guess... is it possible to start at 14? 🤷 If anyone who knows anything could take a second to help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
