I haven't had a chance to dig through all the old posts yet, so maybe someone else has already asked this. Why am I seeing artifacts whenever I try to overclock my graphics card? It doesn't really matter if I'm bumping up the memory or the GPU clock; I start getting visual glitches at just about 5 MHz above the factory settings. My card is a Sapphire NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 with a gig of memory

I swapped my 9800SE for a standard 9800 and just updated the drivers; I didn't touch the memory or core clock speeds at all. I'm guessing one of my pipelines is fried, which would explain the artifacts... but since I'm a total amateur at this stuff, maybe someone smarter here can weigh in with an idea.

If you push your overclocking too far, those little dots (or sometimes lines) start showing up.

I mean, I get that's why they happen. But I didn't actually raise the clock speeds! I just unlocked the extra pipelines. I can't remember exactly how many... it's been a while since I messed with this stuff. Basically, isn't that the only real difference between a 9800SE and a standard 9800? Just the number of active pipelines? It feels like it's even the exact same chip, just with half the pipelines locked off. Usually, it's the ones that aren't performing at their best that trigger these kinds of artifacts. Well, I used those new drivers to unlock them, and now suddenly they're appearing...

If you’d actually bothered to read what he said, you'd see his point—even if he bumps it up by just 5 MHz, those artifacts... those little dots... they're still there.
Anyway, I haven't found a fix for this mess yet.

And how exactly did you go about unlocking those pipelines?

Well, I was using the drivers. But then I read somewhere that you could actually do it through hardware too... though that would require some soldering, so I just decided against it.😬

http://www.techpowerup.com/softmod/ This is where I grab my drivers.

And can I unlock them on a GeForce FX 5500

No.

The softmod specifically unlocks those four hidden rendering pipelines inside the GPU cores of the GeForce FX 5500 or 9800 SE cards. Also, updated drivers for GeForce drivers enable overclocking for all FX series cards.

Alright, here’s the deal! A buddy of mine has this rig, so I decided to tinker with it a bit and overclock it just to give it some extra pep in its step.

The Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz (running at 1607 MHz) is now hitting 1841 MHz after I bumped the voltage from 1.3V to 1.4V.

It's running on a brand new ASUS motherboard.

The NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 was sitting at 196,250, but I got it up to 230,280! The catch is, I'm using ATI Tray Tools, and every single time I boot up the computer, it resets back to 196,250. Does anyone know how to make these settings stick so I don't have to manually tweak the clocks every time I turn it on?

1× 512 MB TwinMOS DDR 400
1× 256 MB JetRAM DDR 400

Also, if anyone knows the trick to overclocking these RAM sticks, please let me know!
I’m also curious—how much more juice can I actually squeeze out of this CPU and GPU? And honestly, how far have any of you guys pushed your hardware? I read somewhere that someone managed to take a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz from 1600 MHz all the way up to 2200 MHz just by bumping the voltage by 0.2V!

Take a look at this picture and you'll see exactly what I mean. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...sa_88/graf.jpg

If you're actually planning on overclocking, you really ought to be using identical memory modules.

Does anyone happen to know where I can pick up a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz?

When I overclocked my GPU using Afterburner, the core hit 355MHz while the memory topped out at 220MHz...
I've got an issue overclocking my Pentium 4 3.2 GHz on a socket 754 setup. Multiplier is 11x, Intel is at 200MHz, RAM is at 200MHz, timings are 3-3-3-8, 2T.
Everything stays stable until the Intel hits 215MHz. It used to handle up to 225MHz easily, but now it crashes if I push past 215. What am I missing? Do I need to mess with the memory settings? Maybe bump up the voltage?
Thanks in advance....

I get the exact same thing. Everything looks fine under macOS, but just try actually launching a game like Counter-Strike or Unreal Tournament and then you'll see what's really happening..

Is it actually possible to set memory latencies to 2 2 2 2.5?

I took it one step at a time until I hit 2 2 2 2.5; everything is running perfectly fine on my rig now.

Why are you running 2-2-2-2.5? What RAM are you using?
I dropped mine down to 2-2-2-5 right away and my PC wouldn't even boot... 🤣

Can someone please tell me what's wrong with my PC? Why can't it handle clock speeds even 10 MHz higher than the factory settings?

Alright, I just finished overclocking. The CPU is sitting in Secure Mode at 2562 MHz, 233 x 11. Ht link is at 931, and I bumped the voltage up by 0.15...
Is a 0.15 jump too much?

I'm running a DFI NF4 Ultra-D 939—definitely an older board by now.
My first CPU was a 3000+ with the Venice core; I managed to push it to a stable 2.8 GHz (with a 1.8 GHz base) using a Whirlpool Freezer cooler—it held up fine for a 12-hour Amazon Prime stress test.
I can't quite remember the exact settings, just that the FSB was somewhere north of 310.
Now I've moved up to a 3800+ dual-core. It has a 2.0 GHz base, but I actually have it running at 2.55 GHz without even touching the voltage—just got lucky, I guess?

The rest of my setup includes:
2 x Corsair Vengeance RAM
2 x 36GB Raptor SATA + 160GB Caviar
A 500W Fortron BlueStorm power supply

The GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX (a total beast!) which I’m actually selling because I need some extra cash for other life stuff. I picked it up at Newegg for $1523, but I'm letting it go for $1167. It's only four days old—I received it as part of a company compensation package, blah blah... basically, I just need the money. Otherwise, I'm sticking with my 7800GT with 256MB, which does the job just fine.

In 4 days I'll lose $333....:klap: 🤔 🙂 🙂 🤣

EDIT: Can someone actually answer my question from before about the CPU overclock?😠

Man, you guys are pathetic. Check out my beast
-Intel Pentium 4 800
-Motherboard (some old Gigabyte from back in '05)
-2x512 MB DDR 400 MHz RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce 6600
-200 GB SATA HDD with 8 MB cache
And I've even got the GPU overclocked to 480/60 MHz

HAHA!!!🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
