Any sci-fi movie recommendations?

Does anyone have a recommendation for some decent B-movie sci-fi...? Something you could actually find at a local video rental shop or maybe pick up from a used CD distributor...😉

Give Starship Troopers a shot, or perhaps Event Horizon. Or, if you want something a bit more straightforward, just go with the new Solaris.😛

Stumbled upon it by total accident—honestly had zero clue what this movie was or even that it existed—but man, Pitch Black actually caught me off guard in the best way possible.

Quick edit—just remembered another one: Dark Side of the Moon. It’s actually pretty decent—kind of feels like a rip-off of Alien.

Uuuh Pitch Black is actually fantastic, and it features a performance by Super 98 😁

Honestly, Pitch Black is complete garbage to me!

John Carpenter—this was basically supposed to be his senior thesis project, just a short film, but he ended up stretching it out into this wild, passionate parody. It’s a total legend. I actually remember seeing it on NBC back in the day. 😁

Aside from that, it remains the finest sci-fi comedy I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

Though it isn't a B-movie by any stretch, you simply must see "Things to Come" from 1939, directed by William Cameron Menzies.

Oh yeah, that’s such a solid Sci-Fi Channel classic based on the work of H. G. Wells. I think IMDb actually lists the release as 1936.

Speaking of H. G. Wells, here is a really interesting one: "Time After Time" (which some folks call "Time Chase"). It’s about H. G. Wells using his time machine to hunt down Jack the Ripper in our modern era.
It sounds like it might be a bit of a mess, honestly, but the movie is actually pretty decent. I just am not entirely sure if it hits that specific level of "Sci-Fi enthusiast" vibes you're looking for.

Are you absolutely sure about that? Honestly, looking at the numbers, the movie didn't exactly break the bank, and in Hollywood, box office success is pretty much the only reason anyone bothers making a follow-up.

Yeah, we know a thing or two about a sequel, legion. But honestly? You’re gonna hate it.

Sony wouldn't mind a follow-up if it stays dirt cheap. Phil Tippett—the guy who was the Industrial Light & Magic supervisor on Starship Troopers—actually pitched Sony this idea for a low-budget flick... he was talking more along the lines of "scary horror like Alien" rather than the massive action vibes from the first one. So, whatever they make, it definitely won't be what you're hoping for. And yeah, none of the original cast is coming back either... actually, thinking about it, maybe that's for the best. 😁
