Avantdale Bowling Club - S/T

I hope I’m not too late to the party with this recommendation.

"This record is about...growing up. I think. It's about dealing with your own stuff for once. Accepting responsibility, maybe. It's a self help book addressed to myself. And just like every other piece of art ever made in history of the hominid, I was going through some shit when I was making it. I'd just left home and everyone I knew, looking to chase a dream. It was an awkward phase, like stage two puberty. I was learning how to be grown. Humility had my pride in a headlock. I was the old man at the art exhibition, the young boy at the art gallery. Everyone was in a K-hole, I was at K-Mart." - Tom Scott"

We had TBF last week—this week, I'm suggesting some jazz-infused hip-hop from all the way over in New Zealand. It actually took home the title for best album of 2019 in its category.

Cody ChesnuTT - The Headphone Masterpiece

Full album

Most people probably first ran into Cody ChesnuTT when Rootsi covered his track "The seed" on their "Phrenology" record.
As for the album itself—it might run a bit long (around 100 minutes)—and honestly, some of those skits probably didn't need to make the cut, but it’s still this gorgeous lo-fi gem. It jumps through so many genres—neo soul, R&B, pure soul—all wrapped up in that beautiful, gritty lo-fi production.

Here are a few standout tracks:

Boylife in America
The seed
Look good in leather
Serve this royalty

I want to give a quick shout-out to V. B. He sold me a massive crate of vinyl about 21 years ago—included about 15 Blue Note releases in the mix, among them this incredible album. Man, what a discovery that turned out to be...

Alright, here are some new polls. We're voting until this same time tomorrow.

Arthur Brown6, I was actually thinking just this morning about how we don't get nearly enough female voices in these Album of the Week threads, so your suggestion of Meredith Monk is actually perfect. You always come up with great picks, but I guess we tend to overlook them sometimes, I don't know why... it sounds wonderful, like that specific moment when you first discover an album. And please, make sure your voice is heard this time. 🙂

I’m going with the Star Wars OST, obviously—it’s an absolute masterpiece.

p.s. A lot of people don't even realize how many big-name American musicians have sampled bits from the Star Wars OST in their own tracks klik

I’m positive this would have absolutely thrilled Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíous. 😁

Now this is a total hit! Honestly, I have no idea why they didn't play this during the memorial service the other day 😁 It would've been such a great tribute to Hans Zimmer.

Anyway, we're getting close to the end of the poll, and right now two albums are tied! And just a quick reminder, definitely give the current album a listen 🙂

'The OOZ' (2017)

morning everyone...

I've been spinning this one a lot lately... so for next week, I’m putting forward masterpiece from when Archy Marshall—better known as King Krule—was just 22. He’s an interesting guy, has that wild red hair, and shows this weird maturity and massive creative drive. It’s an album that pulls from all over the place—trip hop, hip hop, electronica, darkwave, punk jazz, rock—and blends them into this signature sound with a killer atmosphere. His voice is pretty unique too; some people say it's way too dark, but I don't really see it as being that one-dimensional. It works for basically any mood, any season, or any time of day:

Hammer Smashed Face has always been an absolute masterpiece to me!

I’m going to pivot toward something a bit more laid back, though. It wasn't my original plan to go easy on the tempo, but since Rotten Records basically strips away everything Acid Bath is known for, I ended up here:

Dax Riggs - we sing of only blood and love
