Hmm, I noticed the discussion around my suggestion died down a bit, so let me clarify why I picked it... To me, the Eagles are just perfect—honestly, Hotel California is my all-time favorite song—but it’s a little disheartening because I get the feeling 90% of people in my circle only know that one track, if they even know it at all. I once asked a friend to guess my favorite song, and when I finally told him, he just went, "Oh, talk about a one-hit wonder."
Well, those kinds of comments probably stem from the fact that I belong to a relatively younger generation—the Eagles basically blew up right around when my mom was coming of age 😬—so, you know...
That said, it feels like I'm surrounded by actual music aficionados here who definitely know much more than just Hotel California—so I figured, why not suggest this album and see what you all think? Maybe someone isn't even an Eagles fan or familiar with their catalog, and this album might actually be a pleasant surprise for them. That thought is what pushed me toward this pick.
For the record, during my short time on this thread, I've suggested a pretty diverse range of albums—Cooper, Golden Boy, Apparat, and now Hotel California—simply because my listening habits are all over the place! Sometimes I'll suggest a household name, and other times something totally obscure, since my playlist jumps between mainstream legends and indie acts that most people haven't heard of.
I didn't quite get around to listening to the albums from the last round, so I didn't want to vote for something I already listen to—it felt wrong to vote for, say, Sam Fender, whose album I've known and loved for ages—but what's the point? I'm here to discover new things, but I also don't want to sabotage great albums just because they're famous. For instance, albums by Isaak or The Rolling Stones are fantastic, so why wouldn't I vote for them? Just because they're well-known? Personally, I think any pressure regarding how to vote is silly, and honestly, winning isn't even the main goal here. Sure, it's nice to see your suggestion win, but seeing anyone's vote counts as a victory to me—it means something resonated with them, just like it did with me. (Oh, I have to use this chance to thank Amanda Robinson4 and Vanch for voting for Apparat! I was expecting zero votes for that one, so seeing two—especially from the mods—felt like a total win for me!)
At the end of the day, my point is that everyone should just vote for what they truly enjoy, whether it's Apparat or the Eagles. It really doesn't matter. If an album is mediocre or just bad, a big name won't save it (I mean, didn't System of a Down struggle despite the hype?) Likewise, if an album is genuinely good, a famous name shouldn't be a reason to snub it just so some unknown artist can take the lead.
So, there you go... 👍
