J. Amerika ‎– Ko se s' nama druži (1991)

image

Think of it as an Americanized take on the blues, specifically tailored for those lost little souls looking for some solace at the bottom of a glass. This album is packed with tracks that eventually transformed into absolute timeless classics. Much of the lyrical heavy lifting was handled by the legendary Marina Tucaković, while the musical backbone was provided by the iconic Futa & Zlaja bend...

Tracklist
  1. Ko Se S' Nama Druži
  2. Ni Jedne Usna Se Ne Ljube Same
  3. Još Me Bude Misli Lude
  4. Nedelja
  5. Ugasila Si Me
  6. ja lubenica / Da Si Moja Devojčica
  7. Da Sam Kralj / Bolovah Zbog Nje
  8. Bog istina Će Reći

I took a trip to Scandinavia this week—one of my favorite places—and while I was thinking about Opeth, I decided to go with a "brother band" instead. They play gothic, melodic, progressive, and doom metal, though it really depends on which album you pick. This particular record is their "softest" work, and personally, I think it sounds beautiful. If it were autumn right now, this would be the perfect soundtrack.

It feels a bit like autumn...

Jackson C. Frank. 🙏 😍 To me, that's a pretty significant album; he's got a really steady voice.
I’m into Paul Simon too... though I probably need to give this specific album of his more attention.

Cool suggestions overall, though now we just need Dennis Hall41 to throw some Red house Painters into the mix. Just one more bedroom cover, nothing more, nothing less—'down Colorful Hill'. Honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet! Anyway, we're basically guaranteed a bout of depression this week. 😁

Unless Lemonov blues manages to pull us through. 😬

That Lemonov blues track totally throws off the vibe of this whole depressing sequence😁

Hang with us and life gets longer! Grab a drink with us and you'll never be bored! 🙂

Pure poetry!

Petar Grašo really needs to make the cut this week. Honestly, I feel pretty terrible that I didn't think to include him during such a rough patch in his career... 🤦
Dennis Hall41, you've gotta make it up to me.

Hahahaha, I’m right there with you, Džej, nedjelja primus🙏
Primus hits just as hard for me too; they are seriously funky as hell👍
Slowdive kind of reminds me of my absolute favorite band—the Coctea Twins.

Expect a ton of noise from me throughout the week🙂

Primus totally works for me too—they are just so damn funky 👍
Slowdive actually reminds me of my absolute favorite band—the Coctea Twins.

Expect a ton of noise from my end this week 🙂

Honestly, the Cocteau Twins would be such an incredible band if they didn't have Elizabeth Fraser. I know, I know—she’s basically their entire identity, but her vocals just don't do it for me 😁

@Jessica Morris6 if you had put on some Petar Grašo, you would have had my vote 😁 #preyforgraso

He who hangs with us lives longer! And he who drinks with us never sees a dull moment! 🙂

Pure poetry!

Džej could probably belt out goat bleating like it was some grand aria; there isn't a single lyric out there he couldn't handle.

Souvlaki is such an incredible album; I honestly can't remember the last time I was this blown away by someone else's recommendation for something I hadn't really dug into before. Maybe I actually have heard it—I’m clearly being scatterbrained—or maybe I just mixed it up with something from Ride or Low. But man, Machin gun absolutely destroys; it's a total classic!

I might have heard it already—just wasn't paying attention, probably—or maybe I just mixed it up with something from Ride or Low. Machine gun absolutely destroys; it's a total classic!

Was it Ride they suggested?
maybe I'll trip up again 🤣

my respect for them shot up big time after that Pitchfork documentary—it actually managed to make me cry, which is wild. It’s honestly criminal what the critics did to Slowdive 😢

As a massive fan of the Slowdive catalog since 1991, I Beg to Differ.

Gyro doesn't quite reach the heights of their debut for me... plus, Pygmalion really outshines it... though it still sits in a league of its own.

maybe they'll pop up again 🤣

my interest spiked big time after that Pitchfork documentary—it actually made me tear up. It's honestly criminal how critics treated Slowdive 😢

It wasn't Ride, at least I don't think so. And they definitely didn't win.

Which documentary are we talking about, and what did the critics do to them? Isn't Gyro highly regarded? Plus that last one from maybe 3 or 4 years ago was getting tons of praise.

What really hooks me about this album is the vibe—I can't remember the last time music put me in such a perfectly balanced headspace. I wouldn't call it depressing at all. Now I'm just craving that whole dream-pop/shoegaze sound.

Souvlaki doesn't quite hit the same level as the debut... and honestly, Pygmalion totally outclasses it... but still, it sits in its own league.

If that's the case, I better brace myself. This album already sent me into a total delirium—felt like I’d mixed sedatives with hash or something. No clue what it is, probably just those guitar frequencies—reminds me of how Loveless felt, though that one can be pretty intrusive.

Carpenter is an incredible director, and honestly, I love his movies—which means I’m a huge fan of the soundtracks too. The score for Escape from New York is just pure genius. It’s got my vote!

I tried a Gyro once, but it didn't really do much for me. 😁

Carpenter is my favorite director 😁 The guy does it all—he’s just a total complete filmmaker. He’s got my kind of style, too; simple yet incredibly atmospheric music. I'll drop some thoughts on the albums I've been listening to later...

I’ve noticed that some folks have started adding these short little intros for their album suggestions this week... while others haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet.

I think I’ll give it a shot without them this week... honestly, I don't think anyone needs a sales pitch for The Beatles or Julian Cope.

I’ve dropped a few links to the lyrics here... all I’ll say is... read the words and just listen... if that's your thing.
