Laptop's crawling and full of viruses

I just got a new laptop, but the interface is such a mess—everything feels cluttered and needlessly interconnected. To make matters worse, it’s already crawling with viruses and lagging constantly. I need to get it professionally serviced, but I'm stuck because I had some sensitive photos on there. I thought I deleted them, but one thumbnail keeps haunting me; it shows up in the folder preview even though the actual file isn't there when I open the directory. It's ridiculous. I can't exactly hand my computer over to a technician at Best Buy while my private business is staring them in the face! Does anyone have any idea how to clear these ghost previews? I'm mortified.

Does anyone actually understand what I'm dealing with here? Please, I could really use some help. This machine is brand new, yet it's becoming increasingly bogged down by malware, and I'm terrified it's going to simply die on me if I don't fix it soon.

I honestly have no idea what kind of corners of the internet you guys are browsing to pick up so many viruses... personally, I’ve been running Norton Antivirus, and I haven't run into a single actual virus in about five or six years.

If I were you, I'd just wipe the drive and install a fresh version of Windows—problem solved. Nobody’s going to be looking at your private photos if the system is clean, and your laptop will run much smoother without all that malware dragging it down. It's better to be safe than sorry. 🙂

People end up catching viruses because they follow that mindless "Next > Next > OK" routine during installations. They just hammer away at the buttons without ever glancing at what the installer is actually asking—whether you want to bundle extra junk or change settings—and honestly, that's how 98% of infections happen.
I’ve been using Norton Antivirus on and off for the last few years since it gets the job done without dragging my system down, but before that, I didn't use anything at all.
Folks just don't seem to grasp that viruses and other digital pests don't just spontaneously manifest on a computer; people essentially invite them through the front door themselves.
And one more thing to consider...
There simply isn't an antivirus program in existence that can protect a computer from its own owner!

Look, if you take it to any decent repair shop in the States—and I mean a place that actually employs professionals instead of just high school interns looking for extra credit—nobody is going to be digging through your files to find stuff like that. Honestly? I handle all sorts of hardware every single day, and frankly, I don't have the mental energy to go snooping through someone's browser history or private photos, whether I know them or not. It’s just not worth the effort.

Don't sweat it. When the laptop finally needs a pro, just take it in. 🙂
