.AC Milan is hosting Cagliari; after three games without a win, I’m hoping some sunshine—meaning a victory—finally breaks through. The Rossoneri haven't looked great lately, sitting at 15th in the standings with only 3 points from 4 matches, and frankly, things look even bleaker because they haven't managed to find the back of the net once in front of their home crowd. Given that Cagliari is also struggling in 17th place, they seem like the perfect opportunity for Milan to turn things around. Robinho will most likely return to the lineup following his injury.
.Following that catastrophic last-minute loss to Siena, Inter heads out to face Chievo. It was quite a shock for both the players and the fans, and I am fairly certain they will be looking to make amends today. Historically, Inter holds a solid edge over Chievo with a record of 12-5-4. After the Siena debacle, the manager noted that they simply cannot afford to lose games in such a fashion; he added that the issue isn't necessarily the defense, but rather their overly aggressive attacking style that leaves them vulnerable to counterattacks, much like what happened against Siena. They definitely need to address that. While Rodrigo Palacio is sidelined with an injury, Gabi Mudingayi and Joel Obi should be returning to the squad.
.Even though Betis holds the advantage in their head-to-head history (11-10-9), I'm leaning toward Atletico here. They’ve brought in a new powerhouse, much like when a club lands someone like Falcao, and he’s been absolutely tearing it up, netting 5 goals in just 3 league matches. I’m holding my breath that they don't decide to rest him today, as I'd love to see him keep that scoring streak alive. Although Simeone has hinted at a gritty, tough match ahead, he seems confident they can maintain their current momentum.
.Basel is in a bit of a slump as they prepare to host third-place Sion. After 9 matches, Basel finds itself languishing in 4th place, trailing the leaders by 7 points and sitting 5 points behind Sion. Basel really can't afford a disaster like this; they essentially need a win today just to stay relevant in the league race. My only hope is that their top scorer, Streller, who has already bagged 5 goals, gets the start to help carry that form forward.
.I know the least about this particular matchup, but Manchester is currently riding a wave of good form. They recently secured a tough away win against Liverpool, which should provide plenty of motivation. Now, one has to wonder how much the League Cup means to Ferguson and whether he might "leave it alone" regarding Newcastle, so to speak. What I do know is that Manchester hasn't lost to Newcastle at Old Trafford in 20 years, which serves as a pretty strong incentive to secure a win, or at least take the lead in the first half. Ferguson will likely rotate the squad, but he should have enough quality on the bench to manage. The rumored starting XI includes names like Angelo Henriquez, Nick Powell, Alex Buttner, Michael Keane, and likely captain Darren Fletcher. That’s about all the intel I could dig up!
Good luck!
