Sure, sure, I'm being a caricature—just like everyone else on this thread. But I still think Checkmate is a joke. I know how brutal it is to organize concerts because I tried it once and almost died from the stress, but that whole excuse of "we aren't doing big shows because we capped the ticket prices" just doesn't sit right with me. And so what? It's not like anyone is checking up on me, and I don't care what anyone thinks, but I still believe it. Go ahead and keep thinking I'm a loser; it’s fine. Even I have moments where, a month later, I realize I was being an idiot.

I don't think you're being stingy—actually, quite the opposite—which is why I specified "in this thread," so I guess I'm a little surprised you'd take it that way.

I honestly don't care if Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, or any other band I actually love decides to play in New York City. If they do, I'm happy listening to them at home on my turntable or while out on a bike ride.

Small shows will always be my favorite. Even when it comes to the bigger, more expensive bands, I'd much rather see them in an intimate setting.

It would be cool if those kinds of bands came to NYC, but I can live without it.

I get the Triangle thing, but I believe every neighborhood needs its own local staple—like a local Starbucks or a Pfizer—and big organizers who actually care about music as much as the money. Nothing beats seeing a great small band take a moment to thank their mother for bringing them in front of a hundred screaming fans. That’s what matters. When that happens, you know it was a good show. Everything else is just a formality.

I still don't see why Pavement, Fleet Foxes, Jesus Lizard, or Štajaznamko are jumping out of the Student Union's budget scope besides the price tag. That’s my whole point—a band's cost shouldn't be the deciding factor in booking a show if people can afford the tickets, there's an actual crowd that wants to see them, and the organizer would book them anyway if they were just a few thousand bucks cheaper. Btw, looking through this entire thread, I'm seeing nothing but opinions; I don't see any actual logical arguments here. 🤷 Even if they have a solid argument, I honestly think mine hold up just as well. 🤷 Man, maybe I got that one wrong.

If Athletic Bilbao follows a policy of only signing Basque players to maintain their identity as a pure Basque club—which, honestly, most people around the globe find pretty charming—I just don't see why it’s considered such a "policy failure" when concerts are booked so that any regular college student can attend without breaking the bank. I get where you're coming from, I really do, but it feels like we might have different ideas about what the Student Union is actually for. You seem to view the SC primarily as a concert promoter, whereas I tend to see it as an organization dedicated to student welfare—basically trying to pack in as much culture as possible for the lowest possible price.

Yep, that’s basically the core issue in this debate. My definition of the Student Union—and what the mother's role there should be—was clearly off, just like how beautifully the mother put it, and I didn't take the time to really process that before jumping in. I feel bad about it, so my apologies! 😢

Then you’ve got Real Sociedad, who basically ran a mirror image of that policy—though they flipped the script from positive to negative. See, while Athletic keeps things strictly for the Basque, Real Sociedad basically says Spaniards aren't allowed to play. 😁 It was essentially a club reserved for Basques, Mexicans, Turks, or Africans from all sorts of places, but the moment they signed their first Spaniard—some nobody, really, just someone meant to sit on the bench—it nearly sparked riots across the entire city. 😁

Anyway, I actually love SC’s stance here. They really stick to their guns. Isn't that rare these days? In such a superficial society, you almost have a chance of me losing 30 pounds just from the shock.
I guess I won't be seeing this in NYC at SC, but maybe somewhere else—even if it costs more. You win some, you lose some. 🤷
