So, I have a general question. When getting a urinalysis done, the urine sediment results mention epithelium. Are they referring to squamous epithelial cells or round epithelial cells? Thanks for the help!

Dear lady,

Your inquiry slipped past us by accident. It’s an interesting question, though.

By strict logic, if there is no mention of a specific type of epithelial cell, the term should apply to all varieties. However, in casual conversation, when people discuss epithelial cells in urine, they are usually referring to squamous epithelium.

Generally speaking, finding epithelial cells in a urine sample rarely carries much diagnostic weight.

Hey everyone!!
I need some help reading these results—honestly, I'm low-key panicking here, and my doctor won't give me any feedback over the phone.
I had the TORCH panel done after two retained miscarriages, and here’s what came back:
CMV IgG positive 3.6 IU/ml
HSV IgM positive
HSV1 IgG positive
RUBELLA IgG positive 31IU/ml
Everything else was negative, so I didn't bother typing it all out... please let me know what you think!

I got a TORCH panel done after two recurrent miscarriages, here’s what it shows:
CMV IgG positive 3.6 IU/ml
HSV IgM positive
HSV1 IgG positive
RUBELLA IgG positive 31IU/ml

TORCH basically covers infectious diseases—toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, and herpes.

Just hang tight until a doctor weighs in, but from what I remember when I did my own TORCH test, my OB explained that a positive IgG (mine was positive for rubella) just means I had contact with the virus sometime in the past and developed antibodies—basically, it was from getting the rubella vaccine back in school. A positive IgM would mean there's an active infection right now.

So, I guess those positive IgG results for CMV, herpes, and rubella shouldn't be a huge deal, but I'm not totally sure about that positive IgM for herpes. Hang in there, one of our on-call doctors will probably get back to you soon.

The neutrophils and lymphocytes are what's bothering me most—during her last two blood draws, the neutrophils were low and the lymphocytes were high. Just wondering why that might be happening.

What’s the general take on these results? We’re seeing a pediatrician soon anyway.

Hey everyone! Just got my blood work back today. My liver enzymes are up—AST at 37, ALT at 44, and GGT at 60. Also had some trace elements in there with UIBC at 62.1, plus some sediment in the urine sample showing 3-6 leukocytes. Everything else looks totally normal, though! My doctor told me I have to stay away from alcohol and soda for two months (but with Christmas and New Year's 😢 right around the corner, that's going to be tough
). I'm wondering how serious these results actually are... since I'm only 27, I'm honestly a bit freaked out that something might really be wrong. Also, does anyone know how long it typically takes for the liver to bounce back after stuff like this?

So, what exactly are these liver panel results pointing toward?

Hbs Ag - (negative)
anti HBs - (negative)
anti HBc + (positive)
HBe Ag - (negative)
anti HBe + (positive)

anti HCV - (negative)

The liver enzymes (ALT/AST) look fine, and everything else—triglycerides, cholesterol, and bilirubin—seems to be in the normal range too.

Those are basically Hepatitis markers. I'm definitely not a doctor, so I shouldn't be interpreting this, but here’s what I dug up online:

Interpreting HBV (Hepatitis B) Markers
HBsAg: shows if HBV is in the body; usually shows up about 6 weeks after infection and typically clears within three months. If it hangs around longer than 6 months, it suggests chronic infection.
Anti HBs: antibodies against HBsAg that show up later, roughly 3 months post-infection when HBsAg usually goes negative; they stay as a sign of recovery and immunity (either from catching the illness or getting vaccinated).
Anti-HBc: an indicator of acute infection. High IgM anti-HBc levels suggest acute viral hepatitis. Low IgG anti-HBc titers combined with anti-HBs mean there was an infection in the past. High IgG anti-HBc titers without anti-HBs—usually while HBsAg is still present—suggest a persistent viral infection.
HBeAg: indicates how much the virus is replicating (the replicative phase) and how infectious it is; if this lasts more than 10 weeks, there's a high chance it becomes chronic.
Anti-HBe: shows relatively low infectivity; seeing these antibodies usually means the person will likely recover. However, some anti-HBe positive patients still deal with severe chronic hepatitis if HBV-DNA is found in their serum despite being HBeAg negative. This happens because of mutations in the HBV structure ("precore mutants").
HBV-DNA: a super sensitive marker for viral replication.

-----------
Definitely check in with your doctor so a pro can actually tell you what's going on.

PLT platelets 321 (100-400)
RDW-SD, RDW-CV, PDW, MPV, P-LCR, and PCT are all within the normal reference range.
NEUT 19% (REF 21-35)

Monocytes at 0.08 (ref range 0.04–0.08). Just sitting right on the edge.

The neutrophils and lymphocytes are what's really eating at me right now. During her last two blood draws, her neutrophil count was low while her lymphocyte count was running high, and I'm honestly just trying to wrap my head around why that might be happening.

What does this generally mean for the results? We’re heading to the pediatrician with him pretty much any minute now.

Based on these results, he’s dealing with microcytic anemia caused by an iron deficiency in his diet. Even though his iron levels technically fall within the normal range, I’d personally consider extending his iron therapy for another month. That said, I’m not a pediatrician, so you should definitely let his pediatrician make the final call. Everything else looks perfectly normal.

Write. Everything. I've finished reviewing the lab results, specifically focusing on the iron levels and the bilirubin.
2. What was the reason for running all those tests?

Sorry, missed this earlier.
You have Herpes Simplex 1—that's the non-sexual kind, usually just around the mouth.
As for being positive for Cytomegalovirus, don't sweat it; about 70% of people are positive for that. Besides, an IgG result means the infection isn't acute; it just shows you were exposed at some point in the past.
Basically, it means you're immune to Rubella.

What about those neutrophils and leukocytes? Could that be tied to the anemia, or what?

Hello,

Colleague copperraven53 gave you a brief summary of what these markers mean, so I’ll provide a broader perspective on the results as a whole.

First off, this specific constellation of markers doesn't allow for a definitive interpretation.

Essentially, these results could mean the individual successfully cleared a Hepatitis B infection but hasn't developed the protective antibodies (anti-HBs) yet. Alternatively, it might indicate an infection from much earlier that simply didn't trigger the usual immune response.

However, setting aside the "cleared infection" theory, these findings could also suggest the infection hasn't actually resolved—meaning the virus is still present and the person remains infectious. To avoid getting bogged down in technicalities, the HbsAg is the key indicator here. It’s possible the HbsAg is actually positive, but the test missed it because the levels are extremely low.

An HBV-DNA test (also via blood work) will be necessary to get a clearer picture of the situation.

Best regards. 🙂

The urinalysis looks clean. However, you need to redo the liver panel. If those levels stay abnormal, you’ll be sent for an abdominal ultrasound. In the meantime, stick to a liver-friendly diet.

Does the "new diet" mean cutting out soda and alcohol too?
And how long am I supposed to stick to this?

Just head over to an American child health forum and look under the Liver and Gallbladder section—everything you need is right there.
You should stick to it for about one or two months, then go back and get your labs checked again.
