How to reduce animation file size without losing quality?

The title pretty much says it all, but I'm stuck: I have this animation for my avatar, but the file size is just too chunky (it's sitting at over 15 KB). Any tips on how to shrink it down?

You can actually scale it down using a specific feature within Adobe Photoshop...
When you open a GIF in Photoshop, I’d suggest first setting it to "optimized" mode; that way, you get a clear look at the actual file size in kilobytes before you start making changes.
Go to Image > Image Size, resize the GIF to your target dimensions, and then check if the resulting file size hits the mark you're looking for.
If the file still feels a bit too heavy, you can try gradually stripping back the color palette within the GIF settings.

To get the most polished result, you really want to find that sweet spot by balancing the physical dimensions of the image against the number of colors used—it’s all about finding that perfect equilibrium for the smallest possible KB footprint.
By the way, don't forget that Ctrl+Z is your best friend for undoing any mistakes if you need to backtrack. In my experience, it’s often most efficient to just jump straight from something like 100 x 100 down to 50 x 50.

Sorry for bumping this thread. I have a quick question.

So, I shrunk down a .gif animation using both Flickr and Adobe Photoshop. On my computer, the file size shows as 8KB, but whenever I try to upload it to the forum, it tells me the image is too large (17.1KB). 🤷

Any help would be appreciated. 🙂

I’ve been trying to get this right, but I just can't seem to nail it. Even after resizing it down to 50x50, the file size is still sitting at 11.6 kb.

You can find an online GIF editor right here

It handles animations, resizing, color palette reduction... all that good stuff.
For example, coppermarlin13, you’ll probably want to use the "optimize picture" feature.

I'm running into the exact same issue I had with Flickr. No matter how much I tweak everything, even if the file size ends up at only 6kb, the second I upload it to this forum, it jumps straight up to 17+ kb.
I mean, what the hell? 😕

Honestly, I'm having a bit of a struggle with this too. Does anyone happen to know if they could help me shrink this avatar down to about 9.8 KB?

I dropped it from 119 colors down to 37 (which is 8.3 kB), or I can do 64 colors if you want it at 9.1 kB.
