Looking at this list just makes me laugh.
Jazzanovi and Minus 8 on the lineup.
Apparently, the entire electronic scene is just trip-hop now.
Should I just loop five beats on my laptop and claim I play trip-hop too?

Of course I've listened to Orbital. Who hasn't?
The Crystal Method
really good band

That’s why they charge $20,000 if you want them DJing all night.

Any updates on his set at the Fillmore?

Not sure... I live 186 miles outside of Chicago.
I caught him back in Italy though, during the Fez Jazz Collective festival.

Check out the lineup here:

Apparently, Nicola Conta supposedly sold just one ticket during the presale, which is why the concert was scrapped; I suppose we’re all just waiting for better days to come. I am sincerely hoping the Kontrapunkt Festival actually happens this year. Unfortunately, I can't make it to Papillon tonight.

I saw the lineup and honestly, I can’t help but laugh.
Having Jazzanova and Minus 8 on there?
It’s like they think the entire electronic scene is just one big trip-hop genre.
Give me a break. I could throw together five or six loops on my laptop right now and claim I'm a trip-hop producer too.

Look, forty-two artists don't represent the whole electronic scene. In fact, forty-two artists aren't even enough to fill three decent compilation CDs. If you actually believe they are, let me know and I'll lend you some MP3s.
And regarding Jazzanova—honestly, I don't even want to get into it. Just go to Google, search "trip hop" and "Jazzanova" and see how many results pop up. Or try searching "Jazzanova" and "nu jazz." See for yourself.
I truly don't understand why you're laughing at these people. You clearly haven't heard what they actually produce, and trust me, "making 5-6 loops on a computer" isn't nearly as easy as you're making it sound. Even if you managed to pull that off, you wouldn't have even finished 20% of the actual work. If you know anything at all about electronic music production, you know that picking out sounds and samples is the easiest part. The real grind involves massive amounts of enthusiasm, genuine passion, and deep musical knowledge.
I suspect people like them probably know more about electronic music than someone who doesn't even know how to write a basic loop. 😁

A quick recommendation:
Terranov - Never -> It's not Massive Attack, but it is absolutely huge.

Forty-two artists doesn't necessarily make three good compilation CDs.

Sure they do.
If you combine, say, K&D's DJ Kicks with Lavelle's double LP Barcelona, the artist count is still under 42.

I wasn't laughing at the list itself, just seeing Jazzanovi and Minus 8 on there.
Minus 8's Batucada 1 and Batucada 2 are pure trip-hop, aren't they? Braaaaasil... la la la al al la la....
Personally, I think the whole crew would lose it if someone told them they play trip-hop.
It’s baffling how people label artists from labels that built their own reputation on compilations like "futur sound of jazz" or how Minus 8, via a label promoted through "science fiction jazz," gets categorized this way.

if you really think they are, get in touch and I'll lend you a few MP3s.

Depends on what you're offering...
if you know anything about electronic music production, you know picking sounds and samples is the easy part. The real work requires passion, love, and actual musical knowledge.

Well... I have neither the knowledge nor the passion.
With enough expertise and drive, maybe you could convince Jazzanov he plays trip-hop.

I guess those guys probably know more about electronica than someone who doesn't even know how to write a basic loop.

Exactly. It's obvious you're bursting with wisdom. The rest of us uneducated types just have to read posts and learn.

It's strange. You listen to some music and conclude it's a derivative of jazz, then you go online and some guy on some random trip-hop forum decides it isn't jazz, it's trip-hop. And suddenly, that becomes the absolute truth.
As a complete amateur, all I can say is there are trip-hop influences here and there, and certain tracks definitely fit the genre... but primarily, it's jazz, D'nB, Latin, boogie, and funk... with trip-hop being an afterthought.

Anyway... I'm just a layman with no clue.

So, here we go... opening up Winamp...

I'm actually listening to Nightmares on Wax – Ethnic Majority right now.
It’s honestly great.

hehe....Red Snapper...they used to get lumped in with nUjazz...then trip-hop because they're psychedelic, but honestly, they're nothing like that and a hundred times better than anything else. they had MCij, but everything is played live... wild and unforgettable.

for example, our aim is to satisfy Red Snapper.

👎 👎
Faithless is progressive—it isn't trip-hop at all... I guess.

Tricky

I honestly don't even know where to start—the sheer amount of misinformation floating around here is just staggering. I can't even bring myself to list it all out... ☕

What are your thoughts on Portishead?

I’m honestly surprised they haven't come up in the conversation yet.

I think they're great, especially that second self-titled album. I haven't spent much time with "Dummy," and while that live set is an interesting experiment, I've never been much of an orchestra person, so it doesn't quite hit the mark for me.

So, I used to spin this band constantly—they were easily one of the heavy hitters in the genre. I was obsessed with them, alongside all those trip-hop artists and that whole wave of French electronic music back in the day (especially Portishead). But honestly? I haven't touched their stuff in ages. Meanwhile, I’m still picking up bits and pieces of Kid Loca every now and then... 🙂

I used to spend so much time spinning their records right alongside all that classic trip-hop stuff and that specific era of French electronic music (I’m talking specifically about Portishead). But honestly? It feels like a lifetime ago. I haven't actually sat down to listen to them once since then. It's funny how that works. Meanwhile, I'll still find myself casually picking up something like Kid Loca every now and then. It's just one of those things where the tastes shift and you realize how much time has passed. 🙂

So, can we please take a quick detour from the main thread? I’m feeling a bit of an itch to veer slightly off-topic and talk about trip-hop and all those messy, questionable ways people try to categorize it! 🙂 I’m looking for some suggestions! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

Wow, it’s actually really refreshing to see that other people are into this too. Personally, I’ve always found *Dummy* to be a pretty solid album.
