Ah, that devilish Tom Cruise. That ultra-macho version of James Bond.
The absolute embodiment of a high-flying, jet-setting playboy.
This is the man who, back in the mid-eighties, essentially single-handedly rescued Hollywood—becoming what Sheridan was a decade prior—the undisputed favorite leading man for every mother’s generation.
Even though the movie is essentially a tribute (that's French for a dedication) to cliché-ridden sentimentality—and even if the plot itself feels somewhat banal, or "typically genre-driven" as the critics might say—it simply doesn't allow us to pause and question the actual logic of the storyline.
Of course, that certainly doesn't fully excuse the film from its pervasive, mediocre emptiness; however, it could have easily turned out much worse! So, we won't be overly harsh or go hunting for flaws where they don't exist—searching for needles in haystacks, or whatever the idiom is—but rather just state that this flick is a decent distraction for an undemanding and critically unacquainted audience.
It is also worth noting—and this isn't trivial at all—that women tend to enjoy these kinds of brain-numbing spectacles just as much; so, when discussions about movies start heating up, you'll certainly have plenty of ammunition, because if Top Gun guarantees anything, it's a guaranteed hit.
