Looking for a specialist...

I have visited two dermatologists in NYC. Generally speaking—according to some doctors—American dermatologists aren't always the best; they say the less promising students tend to go into that specialty.

However, my own experience has been more or less fine. The first dermatologist I saw (the one you can see with a referral) was Dr. Gold Sviben Radovčić at the Student Health Center. She is supposedly an expert, but she’s a bit rude—relatively unfriendly and painfully blunt, which catches you off guard—I went to her regarding hair loss.

Because of that, I only went once. 😁 The second dermatologist, whom I have been seeing for a long time now, is Dr. Mary Cook at the private clinic Dermangio—it's located near the wall (by market square). The initial consultation is $67, while follow-ups are 150. I believe you can also visit if you have private health insurance (like Addenda or something similar). I am sooo satisfied with her; my condition has improved significantly, and she is a true professional—extremely kind and lovely.

I really need to get my eyes checked—dealing with myopia and astigmatism, and it’s been way too long since my last exam. I definitely need some new glasses.
I'm looking for recommendations for a solid ophthalmologist because I refuse to deal with those rushed doctors who just crank out a prescription in five minutes like they're trying to clear a crowded waiting room.
Should I bother getting a referral from my primary care doctor and heading to a hospital?
If so, which one would you suggest?
Or would it be smarter to just book a private appointment with a specialist?
Where should I go?
And which optical shops actually know what they're doing?
To be honest, I've had a few bad experiences where the lenses they made were totally off regarding my astigmatism angle, and I am absolutely not looking to repeat that headache!

Look, I'm not trying to sound like I'm sucking up to anyone. I have a mild prescription and astigmatism, and honestly, finding someone who actually does a decent job with an eye exam is tough.

Go see Dr. Curuvija-Opacic in Washington, D.C. She has a private practice under the Slosser stairs, right across from that new gas station near Langov Square. I've been going to her for four years. It isn't expensive (around 250-$93) and she's genuinely excellent.

Before I found her, I used my insurance to go to Rebra for exams and glasses, and everything was terrible. But I guess it all comes down to the doctor.

Just go see her and let me know how it goes.

She handles complex cases for people from all over the US, and I've heard nothing but good things about her from multiple sources.

I know this sounds like an ad. It's not. I just think when people actually do their jobs and act like experts, they deserve some recognition. Unfortunately, everyone usually only talks about the bad ones.

I heard that the Opto Center over on Vlaska is actually pretty solid. They’ll even give you a free eye exam if you pick up your glasses or contacts from them.

I’ve been seeing her for maybe 8 or 9 years at this point; she’s a truly conscientious physician. 🙂

Vivian Jelinić at the downtown health center. She’s brilliant; if there’s even a shred of a chance she can save your tooth, she’ll go to any lengths to patch it up and prevent an extraction. I highly recommend her.👍 👋 👋

I’ve been wondering myself if there’s actually a decent dentist in Indianapolis. I was honestly about to start a whole new thread just to ask. Is the guy I’m seeing right now just a complete idiot who hates his job? Because it feels like he avoids work at all costs, and on the rare occasion he actually does something, you almost wish he hadn't bothered. Does anyone know a good dentist 👎

I think Chris Guljas is fantastic. He works over at the clinic.
To be honest, I used to be terrified of dental work, but he’s incredibly skilled, calm, and genuinely empathetic.
He always goes the extra mile to try and save the tooth, no matter how much time it takes, rather than just opting for an extraction.

Dr. Peso-Sljepcevic is a dentist working over on Strossmayer Avenue, and she’s incredibly thorough and attentive.

Not every psychologist is a specialist in everything...

If you're dealing with issues involving abused children, I’d highly recommend Prof. Flander - Buljan.
Or, if you need someone for neurosurgery-related consultations, go with Prof. Pacic-Turk.
And so on... Or, if you're struggling with study habits, check out the psychologists at the Student Health Center near Market Square (or whatever they're calling that area now).
Alternatively, if you need corporate testing done for your company, try Kalibro.
Etc., etc...
There are plenty of great psychologists out there; it just all depends on what you actually need.

(Private practice is totally fine too.)

AFAIK, you’re usually looking at psychiatrists for that kind of thing rather than psychologists...

Look, depression is a clinical psychiatric field... we're talking about an actual diagnosis here. You can't just snap out of it without some initial heavy lifting with medication.
Later on, once things start looking up, you might bring in a psychologist as a follow-up to that therapy...

As for psychiatrists who specialize in depression, I don't actually know any...
The only one I can think of is sending any addict straight to Sakoman... but he’s really the only psychiatrist on my radar.😳
