I'm 16, and honestly, for as long as I can remember, I’ve just been unable to pronounce the letter "L." It isn't like I have issues with any of my other sounds—everything else seems totally fine—but this one specific thing just won't click, and I'm sitting here wondering what is actually going on with it? Does anyone out there have any experience dealing with this, or maybe some tips on things I could try practicing on my own at home? I really don't want to have to go see a doctor for something like this if I can help it... thanks in advance 🙂

Until I was about 10 or 12, I couldn't even distinguish basic consonants like S, Z, or those tricky SH and CH sounds 😬
I saw a speech therapist a few times—it worked. She’d put these massive headphones on me, hook up a microphone, and have me read stories while focusing entirely on my pronunciation.

The only one I actually mastered on my own was the R. For weeks, I spent every night before bed just trying to force the sound out. When it finally clicked, I was jumping around the house like a maniac, shouting "Mom! Dad! R! R! RRRRRR!"
That was my experience. I'm not sure if simple practice is enough for everyone—maybe it has something to do with how the brain processes language structure.

You don't go to a general practitioner for this kind of thing; you need a speech therapist. They’re the ones who will actually give you the specific exercises required to fix the issue. Honestly, none of us here can offer much more than that—you really need a professional to step in. The sooner you get them an appointment, the better. 🙂

I'm dropping this into the social science section, hoping it actually belongs here.
