I remember watching the original when I was just a kid, and honestly, I thought it was such a great movie. Most of my buddies told me back then that there wasn't any point in seeing this one, so I'm actually pretty surprised to see all these positive reviews popping up here!

WARNING! SPOILERS!
At first glance, The Hills Have Eyes looks like just another typical slasher flick being churned out these days. You've got a group of people stuck in the middle of nowhere who end up being hunted by some degenerate humanoids. You can feel the influence of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre at every turn (though maybe the one exception is that this one is all blood and gore, without the usual gratuitous skin show)...
But once you scratch beneath the surface, it's a completely different story...
The setup is basically this: a patriotic American family (Republicans, obviously) gets attacked by mutants in the desert—mutants that were actually created because of nuclear testing, which is, of course, the fault of the U.S. government. It’s ironic how they become indirect victims of the very country they're so proud of (it isn't explicitly stated, but you see it through the grumpy, conservative father who flies an American flag on his rig and mocks his son-in-law for not being a Republican)
You could probably argue about other themes too, like the character of the liberal son who goes on a revenge mission to protect what's left of his family (even if that final shot makes it look like it was all for nothing). There’s also something interesting about the mother, who used to be a hippie back in the day (which comes up in passing), only to end up married to such a rigid traditionalist...
In the end, it seems pretty clear that the ones who make it are the non-conformists—the characters who actually had a bit of a rebellious streak in them...
Sometimes movies offer a better commentary on society than all those talking heads on cable news...
P.S. Did anyone else notice that the lead guy is basically Pyro from X-Men? He even grew out that little goatee😬...

So, the movie... hm... I've seen it... well, I don't really know how many films of this specific genre I've already sat through on this topic, but I suppose the absolute best one in this category has to be... oh, I can't quite recall the title, but it's the one where those kids go on a field trip and then they get absolutely slaughtered in the woods by these horrific monsters who end up eating most of them... but anyway, that isn't really the point right now...
I guess the only truly logical conclusion I managed to draw from this film is that mutants are just incredibly difficult to kill... they're remarkably resilient, I suppose. Like, there's this guy who gets stabbed—pay attention now—with a baseball bat, but after that, the jerk just comes charging through the room like nothing happened at all! And then there was that part that I thought was even better, where he gets shot twice in the neck and head with a shotgun, yet he just stands back up after a minute and tries to grab a gun despite having taken a shot to the hands... though that little girl manages to fix things. Or take that moment when the guy flies into the air along with his trailer... there isn't a single scrap left of the trailer, yet he survives! And then those thugs decide to drive a screwdriver straight into his skull?!... honestly, what the heck. For the first 45 minutes, I was actually watching, but after that, I found myself just tapping the arrow key on my keyboard over and over again. It wasn't necessarily that the movie became exhausting because of any particularly disgusting scenes—nothing too extreme, maybe you should watch Descent instead—but it was just hard for me to keep watching. I started feeling quite sleepy, I guess. It felt like something you'd watch just to kill time if you had nothing better to do, even though there are probably much better ways to spend your time than sitting through this 1:48:22 runtime. There are some interesting scenes, though... for instance, if you pause it right when that master craftsman splatters a head in the bathroom... it might actually be worth watching just to see how they put that together, specifically their depiction of what's left of a head after someone blasts it with a bullet in the mouth.🙂 rating: +2

So, while I was just scrolling through all these posts, I actually stumbled upon the title of a movie that had been completely slipping my mind lately, which is quite funny because I couldn't quite figure out which specific film it was actually ripping off...

The original was filmed back in '77—so there is absolutely no way it could be some derivative copy of Wrong Turn. In fact, Wrong Turn actually lifted its concept from The Hills Have Eyes.

I don't think the core issue is actually how powerful the mutants are. The real matter is that this horror film, much like most others in its category, strictly adheres to established genre tropes. Furthermore, the sheer strength of these mutants serves to clearly differentiate them from ordinary people.
Another point worth considering—this movie, along with several recent horror titles (such as Descent), explores the degradation of the human psyche. It examines what happens when an individual is thrust into an extreme situation and is forced to become just as primitive and violent as their adversaries.

Total garbage and a massive letdown. I didn't pay my money just to get stuck with some random DVD rental; if I wanted a movie theater experience, I'd be sending a scathing letter to the studio. 👎
