I sat down to watch the remake today, and while I wouldn't call it a disaster, I found the first hour to be quite tedious—a slow burn that didn't quite catch fire until much later. I noticed some people drawing comparisons to Wrong Turn, so I feel compelled to offer my own perspective on that matter. To my mind, Wrong Turn possesses a certain tension that this version lacks; there was something uniquely unsettling about that character using a bow and arrow, whereas the weaponry in The Hills Have Eyes feels decidedly more modern and, frankly, less evocative. That being said, one cannot deny that The Hills Have Eyes remains the far more original concept. There are, however, certain lapses in logic that grated on my nerves; for instance, it strikes me as rather absurd that a mutant can take two shotgun blasts and simply keep coming, as if physics had decided to take a holiday. Perhaps I am being overly critical, as the film does feature several standout sequences. My personal highlight was watching the descent of Doug as he loses his grip on reality. There were also those surreal, darkly comedic moments—the sight of a mutant shoving an American flag into someone's head, or another one singing the national anthem amidst the chaos—that stayed with me.
If I were forced to sit down and provide a definitive metric, I would likely settle on a rating somewhere in the neighborhood of a 7.5 out of 10.

The Hills Have Eyes actually came out way before Wrong Turn, so isn't it fair to say that Wrong Turn borrowed just a little too much from it?

Honestly—I don't really care how much he took from him—it's just that the movie itself turned out to be terrible

Personally, I thought it was a decent flick. Hostel was pretty dull if you ask me, but Descent? Now that was actually quite good.

I suspect you likely experienced The Hills Have Eyes first, or perhaps even The Texas Chainsaw Massacre before ever laying eyes on Wrong Turn. If that is indeed the case, I can certainly empathize with why you’ve reached the conclusion that Wrong Turn is subpar. My own journey through these subgenres was somewhat inverted; I encountered Wrong Turn quite early on, and at the time, I found it to be an absolutely brilliant and innovative piece of cinema simply because I had never been exposed to anything quite like it. Following that, I sat through the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which, if I am being honest, was rather mediocre—largely because it felt derivative of Wrong Turn and suffered from generally poor craftsmanship. However, once I finally watched the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, my entire perspective shifted, as that film is truly a masterpiece of its kind. I find myself wanting to revisit the original The Hills Have Eyes to see how it measures up, though I’ve heard plenty of people claim the two are remarkably similar in their execution.

it really is quite similar—I guess the main difference is that the original focuses a bit more on animalistic human nature, rather than being such a critique of the government 😉 and there aren't any puppets 🤣

but in principle, it's very much alike.

To me, the original TCMS is alright... it has its flaws, but the movie is 👍 whereas the remake is 🤮.
I haven't seen the original The Hills Have Eyes yet, but the remake is an okay film.

Honestly, my favorite part is when that bulging monstrosity basically fries her brain and takes half her head off—but then, of course, her sweet little boyfriend rushes to her side. She suddenly jolts back to life from the dead, just like in every single cliché horror flick ever made, and he gives her this incredibly tender, soothing little look and says, "Don't worry, honey, everything's going to be okay." Oh, sure. Yeah. Like that's actually gonna happen... give me a break.
