For quite some time now, I have found myself deeply immersed in the world of film soundtracks—not just the sweeping orchestral scores, but those specific, evocative musical cues as well. Consequently, I thought I might share my modest "must-have" selection; these are the pieces that have become permanent fixtures in my Foobar rotation. 🙂 .
John Barry—Somewhere In Time—Main Theme—a well-deserved Academy Award winner for this one.
John Barry—Dances With Wolves—John Dunbar Theme—simply beautiful.
James Horner—Legends Of The Fall—The Ludlows—equally stunning.
James Horner—Patriot Games—Closing Credits—truly powerful.
James Horner—Deep Impact—Goodbye and Go—lovely.
James Horner—The Perfect Storm—Main Theme—beautiful, though it feels like a modern arrangement bordering on a bit of a riff from Somewhere In Time.
James Horner—Meet Joe Black—Love Theme—so lovely.
Mychael Nyman—the complete Gattaca score—absolutely brilliant!
Ennio Morricone—The Mission—Gabriel's Oboe—so tender.
Thomas Newman—The Shawshank Redemption—Main Score—another Oscar win for Thomas; an exceptional score, perhaps one of the finest ever written.
Thomas Newman—The Shawshank Redemption—So Was Red—extraordinary!
Eric Serra—The Big Blue—Main Theme 🙏
Lalo Schiffrin—Dirty Harry—Streets of San Francisco—🙂now you know exactly who provided "that music from Dirty Harry."
Lalo Schiffrin—Dirty Harry—Palancio classic
Lalo Schiffrin—Bullitt—Shifting Gears—a superb classic (indeed, everything Lalo touches is great); it immediately evokes those gritty, bloody crime flicks of the seventies.
Roy Budd—Get Carter—Main Score—a total classic.
Kronos Quartet—Heat—Predator Diorama—very good.
Moby—Heat—God Moving Over The Face Of Waters—excellent.
Neil Young & Johnny Depp—Dead Man—Dead Man Solo (featuring Johnny Depp’s spoken words) 🙏
John Williams—Saving Private Ryan—Main Theme—the master at work.
James Newton Howard—Collateral—Finale—brilliant!
James Newton Howard—Collateral—Max Steals Briefcase
Danny Elfman—Batman—Main Theme—an absolute classic.
John Williams—Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves—Main Theme
John Williams—Star Trek: First Contact Theme 🙏
John Williams—Schindler's List—Piano Solo
Vangelis—Blade Runner—Wait For Me—sublime, airy, and romantic.
Vangelis—Blade Runner—Rachael's Song—sublime, airy, and romantic.
Edward Shearmur—K-Pax—New Mexico—powerful.
Lennie Niehaus & Clint Eastwood—Unforgiven—Claudia's Theme is easily one of my all-time favorites.
Hans Zimmer—Thelma & Louise—Thunderdome—a magnificent solo piece!!
Elliot Goldenthal—Alien 3—Adagio—powerful, and fitting given it's an Alien film. 😁
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I shall also include a few selections from the classical repertoire; they aren't original scores per se, but they are extraordinary and hold a special place in my heart. 😁 :
Hans Zimmer—Vide Cor Meum—used in Ridley Scott's Hannibal and Kingdom of Heaven—just too good. 👍 (the lyrics come from Dante's poetry regarding unrequited love 😢 )
Georges Delerue—Contempt—Theme The Camille—recalled in Scorsese's Casino, toward the end.
Classical Guitar—Cavatina—the theme from The Deer Hunter.
Samuel Barber—Adagio—utilized in Oliver Stone's Platoon, and if I recall correctly, in Stalingrad and several other films that escape me at the moment...
That is all from me for now; please, do go exploring, everyone—soundtracks are truly wonderful. 😁
